  1. i would be disapointed in just a download too but im thinkin we gotta make it simple as possible for these babies to function
  2. a 45 rpm set would guarentee repeated plays for me, a standard jazz cd mastering would not. at least your holy grail exists, thats a big leap in the right direction. my holy grails are all unconfirmed things, like: audio boot of '57 steve allen show w/ monk band feat. hank & art farmer, and the whereabouts of Grant Greens "green acid" session for blue note, missing from the vault for quite some time. if this ever goes through i bet a download would be the easiest option for them to get on the table....
  3. the later albums are stylistically different than the classic 4, youll have to see which ones you dig. one of them 'feedback' is cass w/ different guys + no randy! sprit has had like 30 lineup changes, i saw a family tree once it made the yes family tree look easy by comparison.... the MUST HAVES: the kapt'n kopter & the faboulus twirly birds lp (Cass + Randy + noel redding) and cass + randy's POTATO LAND. these two are not spirit albums by name, per se but they are by far absoulute must haves past the classic 4. im not exteremly versed in the other 70s spirit albums, and theyre not on cd so you have to be a vinyl guy to find them, one of them is a double album and they do a jam on 'america the beautiful'....if you can find it, the reunion cd from 1984 is good, they do the classic hits rearranged with additional personel, in a live in the studio fashion. its one of the rarest cds however, and will set you back at least 50 dollars unless you encounter a record store miracle. you can find it for cheap on lp, but it is digitally recorded so the cd is kind of truer to the 'spirit' of the album. i love sprit, i love spirit, long live john locke, randy california and ed cassidy, as of recently, now jammin together again in heaven.
  4. its like a boogaloo type thing, this is way different than i thought rhoda scott would sound like. i dont think all her stuff was like this, i thought she was more straight ahead. my copy i just got suffers from glue issues, side 1 label is gone with no trace and side 2 is 90% falling off. interestingly enough both sides are vangelder stamped! so Tru-sound was a subsidary of prestige?? but it didnt say so on the records?
  5. my #1 daves pick request is a new HQ mastering of 10/17/83. sugaree clocks in at 17 min and theres also an extended bird song. they bring back electric 'to lay me down' in this show, 1st electric vers. in many years. all that + all the 80s hits & brent on the yamaha GS-1! esau, bucket, throwin stones + touch all in this show. all this and TERRAPIN. 'revolution' encore.
  6. I traded in my rainbow LP when I got my hands on a copy of the Connoisseur LP. It sounds better. That weird phasing on the cymbals is not as bad and the stereo separation is better. thank you for reminding me to pick that up. i completely believe you on the better SQ on the conn. HOWEVER......how is the vinyl quality on your connoisseur ed. ive found a couple of this era bn reissues, to be badly warped when i find em, rather thin vinyl. the other day i picked up that 'lost grooves' lp that was put out, (the one i found was just lp two, for $3), its cut by Wally Traugott and sounds good, although the vinyl seems a lil on the thin side still. it sounds very different to how rudy would of cut the record, this is very noticable espically on the organ tracks, i can really tell the difference.
  7. Or make a shit load from royalties on compositions. Horace Silver's home in Santa Monica over looked the Pacific ocean. That has to be worth some money. In his autobiography, Horace mentions making money from his publishing company. He learnt this from JJ Johnson and Gigi Gryce. horace has an autobiography?
  8. just unsealed QUEEN/THE MIRACLE, original capitol press, which is (i cant believe) 24 yrs old. ive never seen it on vinyl before, although i knew it existed. definetly more crankable than the digital counterpart! very hard to locate on vinyl format, this release, from 1989
  9. abt to spin one of my weekend aquisitions: mobley quartet (1st album + alt takes) //// mobley caddy (45 rpm audiophile editions) ron steele- chicago guitar (ovation records) Lee Konitz/Gerry Mulligan quartet 10" (pacific jazz) stan kenton- this modern world 10'' (capitol, with rare capitol ten inch inner-sleeve) melvin jackson- funky soul (Limelight) lonnie smith- turning point (with benny maupin & julian priester, both who are playing together as members of a buster williams led group, next year. havent seen maupin in over a decade, am super stoked.) charles lloyd- nirvana (in Mono....mono for promo only)
  10. thanks for postin those mastertape pics. never saw that dootone address on the upper right, before, that must of been a later address, like maybe their offices where they stored the tapes. is any info known how ace broked there dootone deal. it has nothing to do w/ crown/modern/rpm/bihari bros. they sure moved a long way from south central ave....
  11. leased under the counter probs. lp doesnt say leased from world pacific or nothin of course. i just wonder what theyre doin w/ 90% of the crown tapes, you know, the not classic stuff, all the mood music, whatever....there are hundreds of them. i dont think they have them all. certainly theres never gonna be cd reissues of every tape they got, thats impossible. id be very suprised to learn if all those crown tapes existed. what about the last known (by me) bihari related vinyl record, from 1979. an lp of remakes, of popular disco hits, incl. do ya think im sexy? and Heart of Glass. wonder if that tapes there
  12. hey MG, whats that left bank lp u mention w/ groove, is that a major label release of some sort or a private press thing, or somethin. good god, is this how left bank is gonna go w/ the future of the tapes. i am okay with this. next release, needs to be, you can spot it at 0:38 in the kickstarter video: 11-28-65: Hank Mobley, Johnny Coles w/ rhythm sec.
  13. mailed out on halloween, havent received, and tracking info has but unavail. the entire time. i emailed cust serv. tonight...
  14. im hoping my daves picks arrives tmw!
  15. i actually think ace uk possess the crown masters, all of them? i dont know/i doubt it. but i think they ace guys brokered a deal in the 80s with one of the surviving bihari bros. i have no idea on the details.
  16. sorry to be off topic but claude ive tried to reach you to no avail, if you see this, would be thrilled to hear back here in the thread from you..... can u share the story of how u came to obtain the mobley copenhagen 1968 reel to reel, how did do u think it got from europe, to japan, and back to you in europe. was the copy in japan the true master or copy of the master? would it be hard to snap a pic of it too, if convienent, id love that.....take care
  17. the hoffmann mastered Sidewinder is the be all & end all of sidewinders. the vangelder doesnt hold a candle to it. id sell my mint NY USA stereo if it wasnt autographed by bob cranshaw
  18. just got the sidewinder 45 rpm set cut by steve hoffman/kevin gray, if i had to pick the #1 best thing about it, its definetly billy higgins cymbal work on 'totem pole'. the clairity is astonishing
  19. my frank selection for right now, everone on this lp has now passed
  20. your pic didn't load
  21. i like how he also made a lot of records with people from pre-bop jazz, like those swingville releases, etc. he was the real deal. RIP
