  1. look hardbop jazz: i just got back from -the- ONLY, what you call it, 'brick & mortar' style record store, that houses new jazz cds. i LOL'd at some of the titles i saw!! they are really having a field day with this is the EU + and in theory they really arent that bad: check it out some titles.... ---Hank Mobley 12 of this greatest albums 4 cd set ---Herbie Hancock- Takin' Off (Stereo & Mono editions....on one cd!) --John Coltrane: the complete Paul Chambers sessions (?)
  2. saw the quartet west only once, i remember it- i was real aware of ernie watts, but at that time i didnt know about larance marable, and his jamming w/ wardell, frank morgan, sonny criss and dexter. ill never forgot charlie haden had a huge plexiglass sound-wall encompassing him at the concert, i think so he could hear himself while he played, im not sure.
  3. on the spine of this lp, does it really say Bossa Nova Soul Samba. i think there has been some confusion over this
  4. last night in Canada: QUEEN tonight in USA: Steve Winwood
  5. well im happy to see Candido is one....
  6. its like the rock hall, but for jazz- does george avakian dig lloyd? hes in! lol. were not talking of no rock hall till Yes gets in. were not talking of no nea jazzmaster award till they give a posthumous one to hank mobley
  7. something i look over compared to his own music....is Silver the songwriter, SO many other artists have covered his songs, theres full albums of horace music by other artists, like shirley scott on prestige and the mastersounds on world pacific, amongst others. he must of been so widely regarded, his songs became instant standards, it really is amazing, you dont see that much crossover in jazz like that like with a blue note artists material being covered SO frequently....
  8. this is a big blow to me personally, what it is and what it represents. it really is over. I have an autographed picture (real), it means a lot. I think the HS lp thats been doin it for me the most rt now is Cape Verdean Blues. But to pay tribute the best, I really should dig out the iconic HS & The Jazz Messengers on Lexington Ave. label...the one that "started it all" -------- *need to note here the NY Times piece i read at 730 tonite spoke of Benny Maupin playing on HS lp: "Six Pieces of Silver". the auth. was peter keepnews (keepnews's boy) need to get this fixed before print, cant find his email
  9. brownie!!!! good to hear from you my friend!!!! u know what i do have though, is a couple of Bird Dial 78s i found a few weeks ago, in the $1 pile! also dex n wardell- the chase! havent been much on the jazz front since i saw Candido 2 yrs ago, it was by far the greatest jazz show ive seen in 10+ yrs.
  10. patchy, as in u like them less? do u mean your mobley-taste gets patchy after soul station, workout, & no room for squares...? look Jsngrys right. early hank is awesome bebop hank, but when Hank pairs up with Billy Higgins, all hell breaks loose. if you really dig 50s, hank, you would also love 60s hank. the mans complete work is something to understand, from start to end.
  11. did fantasy really sign off on this?
  12. are there really 30 vols of them, like they had when i saw them at tower records (on cd) decades ago. ive only seen 1 on ebay in my life. have any of you ever seen these things. really would like the complete set of these, very essential material
  13. so he really died, from complications from his genetic hormone def, all these years later? thats so sad
  14. its pretty deceiving, actually its hank on the 3 shorter cuts, + george coleman on the 3 longer ones. says so in fineprint on back, not front cover! a real throw-together. if i was at mercury i would of incl. it under the "living presence" banner + made they cut the record with just the hank session. as we all know from the cd, there are more tracks w/ the hank band from the session. truly a mystery album, if there ever was one.
  15. have his 78 on alladin's 'jazz series'. saw him once in the aud. of a show in LA.
  16. busted my hump with a 78 haul, havent done one in years, but theres some good stuff: -multiple white label promos of Dave Brubeck on Fantasy & Cal Tjader on Galaxy -duke ellington WLP on capitol (went for this over the duke victor 'scroll'...mistake?) -gerry mulligan qt on pacific jazz- bernies tune (from the 1st album) -dimotri tomkin on orange label Coral, theme from a hitchcock movie, seems to be from 1955 -ben webster- on SESSION, very thick 78, this one, its nice -charlie parker- yardbird suite (Dial) -charlie parker- relaxin at camirillo (Dial) -dexter n wardell- the chase (dial) -a howard mcghee on dial -wynton kelly trio on blue note
  17. i got this one too dawg! what about the track Bird w/ Milt Buckner, afaik the only Bird + B3 recording....!?
  18. ok, so thats what it is, its direct from blue note, 75th anv. series- cut from the 192. id be wiling to check out a new transfer of the Cornbread tape....
  19. just got this which is a JGB show from 1977, Orpheum/Boston. 2 lps, it is the early show, of a 2 show night. how sweet it is, second that emotion, harder they come, Gomorrah, they love each other, lots of good jgb stuff. too bad though they saved "cats" for the 2nd show.....
  20. got mine, so ready 4 this....
