  1. jazzbo-- these are such great photos! i'm sorry to have to ask you to do this, but for those of us who are still learning our jazz history, could you please go back and add a line under each pic to tell us who they are of. it would really be appreciated!! thanks. evan
  2. here are my catagories, all are alphabetized within: Jazz Big band Rock/pop Classical Country (my Wife's) Kids Religious/Comedy (they both share the same drawer <ggg>) Wife's (non-country) Reggae Ska Misc. Musicals/Soundtracks Quite eclectic, but i always have something good to listen to!
  3. thank you! you obviously are a person with exquisite taste!
  4. thanks guys, but listen to the album again. remember "we've got to have some Brubeck for the new frontier!" also IGY, they sure sound a little jazzy to me! but now the real purpose of the thread . . . . just what IS jazz anyway!
  5. GREAT PIC! i am embarrassed to ask, but i will any way, who are the three people pictured?
  6. I have a very large cd collection which i love to organize and reorganize. recently i pulled out of my "rock/pop" cd's donald fagan's the nightfly. after listening to it again i could not put it back into "rock/pop". the question looms, where to file it? is it jazz?. . . . .
  7. This was a good excuse to listen to the entire album again! For me it was Blue Train, hands down! Now what album is next?!
  8. What about Phineas Newborn, Jr., George Russell or Art Tatum? Nobody's even mentioned them!!! And what about . . . Brubeck?!! B)
  9. Perhaps a few Vodka Gimlets will help me appreciate this cd better?!<ggg>
  10. Thanks for replying Big Wheel (I was beginning to get a complex waiting in the other thread!) I really enjoy many different types of Jazz. Some of my favorites are Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith, Brubeck, Miles, Gene Ammons, George Russell, Regina Carter, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chet, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Curtis Counce, Sun RA (Except "Space is the Place" which is unlistenable), Mingus . . .I really can go on and on. I have a pretty large (and always growing collection!) I have Hill's point of departure which i enjoyed, and also Ornette's Tomorrow is the Question--also very good! Jang's Cd Reminds me of some of Evan Parker's work. I really want to try to appreciate this work,so i'll keep trying - thanks for your suggestions! Evan
  11. As a result of a recommendation in a different thread in this forum, i bought the Jon Jang cd, "Two Flowers on a Stem." Boy was I disappointed!! Please somebody explain to me what I am missing! The cd was in many parts completely unlistenable. Just NOISE. Maybe I am not listening correctly? Suggestions on how (if at all) this cd can be appreciated would be most welcome.
  12. Well, since Dr. J's avatar is Roland Kirk, one of my all time favorites, i figured that his recommendation of the Jon Jang cd had to be worth checking out. Boy was I disappointed!! Please somebody explain to me what I am missing! The cd was in many parts completely unlistenable. Just NOISE. Maybe I am not listening correctly? Suggestions on how (if at all) this cd can be appreciated would be most welcome.
  13. i certainly will check out EXTRAPOLATION but in the meantime today i will listen to an old favorite of mine: "Friday Night in San Francisco" with McLaughlin, Di Meola and De Lucia. GOOD STUFF don't you agree?!!

  16. i hope this works (my first attempt to post a picture) here i am with les paul.
  17. A few months ago work took me to New York City for 2 days. Since i was "off" during the evening, I checked the paper to see who was playing. Imagine my delight when i discovered that Les Paul and his trio were playing at the Iridium! Les has been playing there Monday nights for many years now (I think he is 87!) and this would be my first (and probably only) opportunity to see him. Well it was a great show and afterwards I met Les and had my picture taken with him. But now the real purpose of this thread! The Bass player was a young Australian lass named Nicki Parrott and WOW was she terrific!!! She stole every number with her passion and intensity! When I returned home I found (and bought) a cd that she was on (a group called "Fiveplay") and enjoyed it very much. Has anybody else "discovered" Nicki Parrott? If you get a chance, CHECK HER OUT!!! edited for spelling errors (mine)
