  1. There have been a lot of good recommendations made so far. The recommendations that stick out for me so far are those made for Dave Burns, Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland, Howard Roberts, Don Fagerquist and Gil Cuppini. Some of the recommendations were for more current performers. My interest was more in those artists whose body of work has already, more or less, found its place in jazz history.
  2. I'm interested in discovering more good/great recordings that fall under most peoples radar. They're off the beaten path of the tried and true greats. Maybe they only recorded only a few dates or maybe they were primarily a sideman. What would you recommend? Just to give you an idea of the type of thing I'm thinking about, here's what I would include on such a list: Dave Bailey - The Complete 1 & 2 Feet In The Gutter Sessions Lou Blackburn - The Complete Imperial Sessions Johnny Coles - Little Johnny C Curtis Counce - Curtis Counce Quintet Complete Studio Recordings Jon Eardley - From Hollywood To New York, The Jon Eardley Seven Maffy Falay - Maffy Falay Quintet Joe Gordon - Introducing Joe Gordon, Lookin' Good! Fred Jackson - Hootin' N Tootin' Hal McKusick - Hal McKusick Quartet The Complete B.Galbreth, M. Hinton and O. Johnson Recordings; Triple Exposure Don Sleet - All Members Cy Touff - Cy Touff, His Octet & Quintet, Tickle Toe Jack Wilson - Something Personal, Easterly Winds Jimmy Woods - Awakening!!, Conflict John Wright - South Side Soul, Mr. Soul Apologies in advance if I've posted something like this before but I don't recall if I've just thought about this or if I've actually posted something like this before.
  3. Complete Felsted Mainstream Collection (5-CD) Contains: Rex Stewart - Rendezvous With Rex Earl Hines/Cozy Cole - Earl's Backroom And Cozy's Caravan Buster Bailey - All About Memphis Buddy Tate - Swinging Like...Tate! Coleman Hawkins - The High And Mighty Hawk Dicky Wells - Bones For The King Budd Johnson - Blues A La Mode Billy Strayhorn - Cue For Saxophone Dicky Wells - Trombone Four-In-Hand High Jinks: The Mose Allison Trilogy (3-CD) Contains: Transfiguration Of Hiram Brown I Love The Life I Live V-8 Ford Blues
  4. Would that be St. Olaf in Northfield, MN? They have an excellent music program there. I enjoy listening to the choral music as well. It's become a part of making my Christmas holiday season. It's somewhat of a tradition here in MN. There are large Christmas programs put on at several colleges including St. Thomas and Gustavus Adolphus. I attended this years Christmas program at Bethel University. Between the choirs and the orchestra, there were over 300 students on stage. Of those, only 20% were studying music or music majors. The quality of the various choirs alone and as a whole was very impressive, as was the orchestra.
  5. Merry Christmas to everyone and a Happy New Year! 'And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."' Luke 2:8-14 "That's what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown." Linus: A Charlie Brown Christmas
  6. From SecondSpin.com. Good through 12/16, use code SSHOLIDAY for free shipping and 20% off when you spend $20.00. Tom Scott - Bebop United Roy Hargrove - Parker's Mood Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose Kelly Willis - One More Time/The MCA Recordings
  7. No Mosaics for me this year. I'm up to 31 Mosaics and can only really think of 1 or 2 I'd want in addition to those and even those aren't "must haves" for me. Actually, there's no jazz on my Christmas wish list this year. The only CDs I'm asking for this year are: Brian Setzer - Rockabilly Riot 1: A Tribute to Sun Records The Black Keys - They're new to me so any of their titles would be interesting.
  8. Mine played just fine. Sometimes the sound seemed to fade in and out but it may be due to a speaker problem I've been having.
  9. The Complete Blue Note Horace Parlan Sessions I've been making my way through this the last couple of days. This is such a fine set and so enjoyable to my ears.
  10. the latter is probably one of their absolute best releases. Amazing at one point they had so much talent or songs that most of their best work didn't even end up on the records. That's what I was thinking as I listened to the sound samples. The B-side material is so strong that it would have been an excellent release by any band and some of the songs sound like they could have been singles themselves.
  11. It's a non-jazz cyber Monday. Oasis - Time Flies...1994-2009 (2-CD) Oasis - Masterplan The former contains all their British singles plus "Champagne Supernova" and the latter is a collection of their B-sides.
  12. Psalm 16:11 "You (God) will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." "At Your right hand..." being the place of honor, the place where the saints will occupy heaven. Forest Hills Evangelical Free Church needs a little help in their sign department.
  13. The Tal Farlow set is indeed a fine box set. I had never even heard of him when I discovered someone selling new/sealed sets (Universal) in the $45-50.00 range. I took the gamble figuring at worst, I'd at least be able to get that amount back by re-selling it if I didn't like it. I ended up really loving it and consider it among one of my best Mosaic buys.
  14. PRICE DROP!! It's now $41.44 $41.31 :g If it hits $41.20, I'm buying! :g

    Gigi Gryce

I gave the Gigi Gryce set a listen and can put to rest any concerns about sound quality, the sound is just fine. I purchased The Three Sounds set as well. The packaging and appearance are just as I described above for the Gryce. It doesn't appear that any songs were left off of The Three Sounds set.

If I'm not mistaken, even closer inspection will reveal that "Smoke Signal" (3:28) and "Nica's Tempo" (5:27), both recorded February 4th, 1957, are missing from Jazz Lab (CD 2, #1-6). F Mr. Urbina is correct with the two additional missing numbers. It's kind of a drag but I'll live with it. My primary interest in this set was getting "Sayin' Something", "The Hap'nins" and "Reminiscin'", all which are fully intact.

    Gigi Gryce

I just received my Gigi Gryce set today. The 4 CDs are housed in a double-wide CD case. The artwork on the front of the case is exactly as what appears above. The back of the case lists each disc and the albums, song listings as well as song times that appear on each. None of the 8 albums are broken up or split between two discs. (Each disc contains two albums.) The discs themselves are made to look like mini LPs. The booklet is primarily a catalog of other titles available but it does provide a breakdown of the musicians/instruments that appear on each album. There is no original cover art other than what you see above. There are no liner notes of any kind. It's pretty much a bare bones package though it's an attractive and well done one. I knew going into this I would be getting a bargain-aimed release so my expectations were relatively low but I have to say that this set is better than I expected and I'm very pleased with it. I'll report on the sound once I get a chance to listen to it. *****CAVEAT***** Upon closer inspection, there appears to be two missing songs. "Social Call" is missing from "When Farmer Met Gryce" and "Speculation" is missing from "Nica's Tempo". It doesn't really bother me as I otherwise wouldn't have noticed but I know that it would bother completists and a lot of other people. Just know that going in so you aren't disappointed finding out later. I'll check to see if the songs appear on the disc despite not being listed.

The basis for my interest in these sets is pretty much the price though it's always nice to pick up a bundle of great music by an artist. I have the Gryce set on order and paid $13.48 delivered. Sure, all but one of the titles in the set are available individually on the internet but just a quick look on Amazon for those 7 titles and I would have been paying around $150.00 for them and I'd still be missing the one title. I don't know anyone who has this music to make copies for me nor can I solicit such from anyone here. I'm not interested in any non-CD version of the product so I see this set as a great deal. The quality of theses kind of sets has never been a problem with me. I have yet to be disappointed by the sound on any of the various bargain sets I've purchased over the years. Maybe a handful of (older recording) songs within the larger body of songs may have had a sound quality where I might notice a slight difference but all have been very listenable if not excellent to my ears. Even very listenable is preferable to not having it at all. Liner notes and such make little difference to me. I've probably only read about 1/2 to 3/4 of the notes of all the "legitemate" recordings I own and for the most part, care little about them once I've read them the first time. I guess I must be the bargain issuers target audience. Even at these great prices, I was on the fence about The Three Sounds set. Even though I had none of them in my collection other than on a Stanley Turrentine and a Lou Donaldson recording, I had other stuff in my collection that would scratch that same itch and decided to pass. While poking around, I happened upon a seller offering a new set for $8.55 delivered so I decided to take the plunge on that bargain. I'd be happy to report on both once I receive them and get the chance to listen.

Well, despite the naysayers here, I placed an order for the Gryce. I'd be happy to report on it once I receive it and give it a listen. I don't see anything in this set that I would have bought otherwise were it not for this set. Some of the prices out there for the individual discs from 2nd and 3rd party sellers are outrageous.
  20. Roger Moore was the first Bond I ever saw with Live And Let Die so at first, he was the standard to judge other Bonds by. As I grew older and more discerning, Moore fell out of favor for Sean Connery and then he in turn, with the new movies, Daniel Craig. Craig is my favorite Bond, a good distance ahead of Connery. In my book, the rest are pretty much also-rans. I'm not especially a fan of re-makes (hard to avoid at this point in the Bond canon) but I wouldn't mind seeing Craig in a reboot of Live And Let Die.

Does anyone here have experience with these sets? Since it is 8 albums on 4 discs, do all the albums fit neatly on a disc or are there some albums that would be split between two discs to make them fit? It would be kind of a drag if the flow of an album was broken up between two discs.

I might have to pick this one up along with the Gryce. I only have "Blue Hour" in this set.

Legit enough for me. Thanks for the notice! Of the eight, I only have When Farmer Met Gryce and Rat Race Blues. I've wanted several of the others but some of them are pretty pricy on the current market. At this kind of price, I won't mind the overlap of two out of the eight.
