    Art Pepper

You're not alone on this, I hated it from the very beginning. I think this topic has come up before and if I recall correctly, Laurie said something to the effect that Art would have appreciated the dark "humor" of the title. To me, it seems to reduce Art to some kind of cash commodity rather than act as a vehicle to bring his wonderful performances to light. It casts a bad shadow on her motivation for doing whatever she does with Art's work released under the label. It's got a bit of a greedy ring to it and lends itself to interpreting her role as the "poor widow" for whom we should feel sorry. Had I been in her circle of influence, I would have strongly advised against using that horrible name for her label.
  2. A bunch of non-jazz. Fountains Of Wayne - Utopia Parkway and Welcome Interstate Managers The first time I ever heard Fountains Of Wayne was when the song, "Red Dragon Tattoo" was used for a show on TV. (I think it was some kind of Stephen King adaptation.) I immediately liked the tune and wanted to hear more from the group. Subsequent to that, I discovered that one of the band members wrote the catchy song for the one-hit wonders depicted in the movie, "That Thing You Do". For whatever reason, they fell off my radar until recently when I heard one of their songs again. I asked myself, "Why don't I own any of these guys' CDs? I like them!" I remedied the situation with these two CDs. Fortunately, they're readily available and I was able to get like-new copies for less than $4.00 each delivered. She Thinks I Still Care: The George Jones Collection This is a 2-CD, 40 song compilation of Jones' United Artists years. I really wanted the Bear Family box of all his UA material but I really can't afford it and I tend to listen to smaller sets more frequently anyway. The President and the First Lady Not Prez and Lady Day but a 20-song compilation of George Jones' duets with Tammy Wynette. Rather than chase down a handful of individual albums, I decided to go the compilation route and allowed myself to be happy with that. Asleep At The Wheel - Ride With Bob Their 2nd tribute album to Bob Wills with an all-star cast of guest artists.
  3. Everything from Second Spin is used. The one exception, in my experience, was when I got the Art Pepper Village Vanguard box set. It was new/sealed but the area around the bar code was torn open and the bar code was blacked out. (I seem to remember getting that box set for $12.00 to $14.00 delivered.) As soon as I saw the post on the Evans box set I checked the site and the title still appeared but it was at a zero quantity. That meant someone had just bought it and the system hadn't updated to reflect it gone. That was several hours ago and I see that it's gone now. I've purchased many things over the years from Second Spin and have been very happy with my experience. I keep going back. Only once was I a bit disappointed. I got a 2-CD set where the discs and the box were a bit more scuffed up than I thought they should be but the discs still played perfectly. I kept it because it was a hard to find set at a good price. Most of the discs I buy there are in very good to like new shape. I say, shop away!
  4. Wow, this thread was resurrected after nearly 7 years! Still, it's interesting to read through the recommendations. The Capitols are easy picks but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim. It's a real gem and anyone interested in Sinatra should definitely check it out. It's beautiful, relaxed, wonderful.
  5. June? She seems to be busting out all over.
  6. Lost in Shangri-La: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II Mitchell Zuckoff Near the end of World War II, a plane carrying 24 members of the United States military, including nine Women’s Army Corps (WAC) members, crashed into the New Guinea jungle during a sightseeing excursion. 21 men and women were killed. The three survivors--a beautiful WAC, a young lieutenant who lost his twin brother in the crash, and a severely injured sergeant--were stranded deep in a jungle valley notorious for its cannibalistic tribes. They had no food, little water, and no way to contact their military base. The story of their survival and the stunning efforts undertaken to save them are the crux of Lost in Shangri-La, Mitchell Zuckoff’s remarkable and inspiring narrative. Faced with the potential brutality of the Dani tribe, known throughout the valley for its violence, the trio’s lives were dependent on an unprecedented rescue mission--a dedicated group of paratroopers jumped into the jungle to provide aid and medical care, consequently leaving the survivors and paratroopers alike trapped on the jungle floor. A perilous rescue by plane became their only possible route to freedom. A riveting story of deliverance under the most unlikely circumstances, Lost in Shangri-La deserves its place among the great survival stories of World War II.
  7. I've never dipped into this little family of the music world before so I thought I'd pick up a healthy slice of early country rock ranging from the late 60's to the late 70's. I'm really excited to dig into this stuff! (Once it arrives.) Gram Parsons - Sacred Hearts & Fallen Angels: Anthology This is a 2-CD, 46 song Rhino anthology covers Parson's work with the International Submarine Band, continuing through his period with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the late 1960s, and ending with his two solo albums from the early 1970s. Listening through the sound samples a couple of times really hooked me. Gram Parsons & The Fallen Angels - Live 1973 Another Rhino issue covering a performance recorded in front of a studio audience and broadcast live on WLIR in New York in March of 1973. He and Emmylou Harris made quite some beautiful music together. (Here and on the Anthology above.) Emmylou Harris - Original Album Series This 5-CD set contains some of her best and includes her 1970's Reprise releases, Pieces of the Sky, Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town & Blue Kentucky Girl. I snagged this one new/sealed for $13.97.
  8. I really like Tijuana Moods which was recorded around the same time with basically the same group. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Bill Evans was the pianist. I'm looking forward to giving it (and the Mulligan) a listen. I won't be having any "me" time until tomorrow so it'll have to wait.
  9. Amazon, etc., links, anyone? Black Saint/Soul Note boxes
  10. A couple of items from a Half Price Books sale. Most of the times I go there I'm disappointed with the selection but they had a fair amount of decent stuff there today. I already owned most of the interesting stuff but I grabbed these two discs, new/sealed for 20% off: Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band Live at the Olympia Paris 1960 I was surprised to read this little blurb on the back cover art, "The must have companion piece to the Mosaic box set!" Charles Mingus - East Coasting
  11. Tubby Hayes - Jazz Genius: The Flamingo Era (3-CD) Duke Pearson - Dedication Winard Harper - A Time for the Soul
  12. I don't watch the show, but I caught bits and pieces of him on Celebrity Rehab and I was alarmed to see his poor condition. He was a mere shadow of his old self, a broken man. From what little bit I saw, I had serious doubts that he was ever going to be sober again. Substance abuse is a terrible thing and it indiscriminately saps the life and soul out of it's victims.

  14. For me, there's nothing left that I gotta have, but I've purchased a lot from them (and BMG) over the years. I may be able to scrape up a few titles if the deals get even better. Even $4.99 is enticing. Weren't they in the $2-$3.00 range at the end when BMG went out of business?
  15. Unfortunately, it's only available to current members. They aren't taking any new members.
  16. There currently seems to be a problem with the site. For the last half hour, I've been trying to order a CD for my daughter and the site keeps freezing up. Guess I'll have to try later.
  17. Sale through the 25th for $4.99 discs. Promo code 499SALE.
  18. I checked out booksonline.com that was mentioned in the email. They said that music was among the things where you could find "amazing" deals when you visit the web site. Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't find any music there.
  19. I'll probably pick through the bones of what's left of their catalog to see if there's anything worth picking up should they go into a deep discount mode to clear inventory. I had a hard time finding anything when they had a recent 30% off sale.

  21. Any idea what the shipping charge is to the US? I've gone to the site, but it won't tell me until after I give them my credit card, and I don't want to do that just yet. (I'm kind of proud of myself to have gotten that far with a language I'm unfamiliar with!) I have the Google toolbar installed and it will translate the page to english. Shipping to U.S. is 14 Euro + VAT whatever that is.
  22. I think YourMusic.com is on it's last legs. I picked these up off their 30% off sale. Jump, Jive an' Wail: The Essential Louis Prima Boz Scaggs: Fade Into Light
  23. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah! Happy Easter to everyone.
  24. I very much enjoyed tonight's episode of Fringe. I like that they are taking chances and doing such interesting things with the show. It's really got me looking forward to how they're going to wrap up the season.
  25. The Horace Parlan discs featuring the Turrentine brothers as well as the disc featuring Booker Ervin, Grant Green and Johnny Coles.
