  1. For me, it's the big sets. I bought a handful of the Membran 10-CD sets and I think I've only made it through about half of the Nat King Cole box and there are probably several of Louis Armstrong's I haven't gotten to yet. I have a 40-CD Mozart set and at best, I've only listened to about 1/3 of it. (I've owned it for years.) I have many Mosaic sets I've only heard once so at this point, it would be like I haven't listened to it yet because it all would probably sound new to me. I'm probably just as bad with DVDs because I can think of at least a couple dozen worth of discs I bought and haven't watched yet.
  2. The season finale of Breaking Bad was a Wow! I particularly liked how they did that panning shot of Gus at Tio's nursing home just after I said to myself, "Whaaaat?!?!?!?". This very well could have been the final episode of the entire series leaving us with the questions of what happened in the aftermath. I'm left wondering what is going to fill the final season. I'm really not very interested in Jesse's story with the girlfriend and her son. I'm not sure if there's a full season's worth of material with Walt and resolving his family issues. I'm hoping the final season isn't a let down from what has been a stellar 4 seasons already.
  3. What's the verdict on American Horror Story? Is it worth checking out?
  4. I'm interested in seeing the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. From the previews, it looks like they have the look and feel of the movie right. Some of the shots look like they could have been from the original. (Denmark?) It will be hard to beat the original main characters. Having seen the sub-titled originals and read the books, I can totally see Daniel Craig in the role of Bloomkvist. From what I've seen so far, I like the look of Noomi Rapace's Salander more than I do Rooney Mara's but I'll have to reserve final judgement until I see the film. I don't know why this one jumped out at me but I thought Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger was a good choice for the part.
  5. I really enjoyed Purdie's interview on Steely Dan's Aja DVD where they have a track by track discussion on the making of the album. Bernard certainly isn't one who lacks any kind of confidence in his playing.
  6. Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on his 16th note shuffle My link
  7. I can easily recommend Moneyball, particularly if you are a baseball fan. It's a very well done look at the inside workings of baseball. Jonah Hill did a great job and I almost missed Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Very enjoyable.
  8. It looks like he's acting on his own again with his decision to stop doing whatever he was going to do with that machine thing he made. (Erase Peter from history?) I guess that won't stop him from doing it some time in the future but the Watcher is apparently driven to kick against the goads.
  9. I think there's a chance that this is intentionally so, as Lincoln Lee on the other side was a Fringe agent and in fact became the head of the department. I think there's something about the "merging" of many characters that is going to show combinations of both individuals in the parallel worlds. I remember one of the "watchers" commenting to the other something to the effect that the cop and Olivia were colleagues/partners on the other side. It seemed more a comment made out of surprise or noting the coincidence than it did an acknowledgement of something that happened out of design. From whom or what do the watchers take their orders? Something or someone wants/needs Peter to be erased from history. The whole parllel worlds concept is an interesting one with lots of areas that can be explored.
  10. I haven't watched a whole lot of the new TV shows. I can't say that I liked Whitney. I liked the chemistry and dynamic between her and her boyfriend which shows some potential but I don't like any of their friends, particularly that pervert cop and that abrasive/bitter alcoholic woman for lack of a better description. Some elements work but the show seems a bit forced. I don't know if it will be around long enough to find it's rhythm. (get rid of/find better friends) The Big Bang Theory" was above par and funny. For me, The Office is circling the drain, a weak shadow of what it once was. The show lost it's grip with several story lines including Jim/Pam getting married/having a baby, Pam moving to sales, Daryl moving upstairs, Gabe moving into the office and Kelly being more prominent. I saw the same kind of downward slide in "Scrubs" around or after the 4th year. I was looking forward to Fringe but was sort of disappointed. The show seemed kind of removed from where they left off last season. The cop who was left without his partner seemed to slide into the Fringe division's activities a bit too easily. Breaking Bad continues to be excellent. Only one more season of that show when this season ends soon. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet but I'd like to check out Person Of Interest.
  11. I've probably asked this before but are there ever any deals to be had on Bear Family box sets anywhere out there?
  12. I'm late to the party as well but I'd be curious to know who was playing the week of 11/21/59. There had to be something interesting going on in 1959.
  13. Live At Birdland- Lee Konitz, Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian Mint, played once. Complete with case, artwork & sleeve. $9.50 delivered to U.S. addresses.
  14. PM sent on the following: 4 Art Blakey At the Cafe Bohemia 2 (BN RVG) 6 Booker Little & Friends by Booker Little 5 Harold Land The Fox (OJC-Contemporary) 5 Woody Shaw: Imagination (Muse)
  15. Nope, Keith knew his limits. Referring to that he once said "I never turned blue in somebody else's bathroom." I just finished his biography and he indeed knew his limits. (And was never shy about hitting them.) The casualties were those who didn't know their limits and kept reaching for that next level of high.
  16. Oscar Peterson was known fan of Nat Cole. He's also known to sing very much like him to the point where it can be hard to tell the difference vocally. Re: playing "too many notes". There's a lot of OP to be had and loved, both busy and more restrained. Pick which you like best and stick with that. I'm not a fan of Art Tatum or that style of playing so I prefer his more restrained playing and love him as an accompanist.
  17. Agreed, but like others posters here, I would much prefer that Mp3 enthusiasts post their bargains in a seperate thread. I'm always disappointed when I look here to find a potential bargain and discover it's a Mp3. Mp3s and vinyl are certainly both valued and legitimate formats, but I couldn't care less about either and would rather not see them here.
  18. I second the motion. I'm interested in physical product but have ZERO interest in mp3s.
  19. I stopped in the f.y.e store in the Mall Of America and picked up The Ultimate Oliver Stone Collection on sale for $14.99 !! It's a 14-disc set containing the following movies: Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth, The Doors, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday, Natural Born Killers, U-Turn, Talk Radio, JFK, Nixon, Salvador and the documentary, Oliver Stone's America. There's also a bonus disc containing Looking For Fidel, Persona Non Grata and On The Set Of "Alexander". The clerk there even commented, "That's a nice bargain! It would have even been a bargain at the originally marked price of $29.99."
  20. Happy Father's day to those of you who are fathers. Count your blessings, give your kid(s) a hug and tell them that you love them. If you still have your father, give him a call or spend some time with him.
  21. The Three Sounds - Soul Symphony and Elegant Soul This is my final farewell purchase at YourMusic.com before they close up shop at the end of the month. Even at $3.99 a disc, these two were all I could find of interest out of their highly depleted and rapidly thinning stock. I'm going to miss the site. BMG/YourMusic.com were a great way to build up a nice collection at great prices.
