  1. ? ...Wayne Shorter CDs, that is. Dairy Queen is an ice cream chain. That's a whole lotta ice cream!
  2. While I welcome and always appreciate recommendations, this is also meant for others to share what they would do if they had $200.00 to spend.
  3. Guy didn't say that! Notice the quotes. I was quoting one of the youtube comments. Guy Sorry, my bad. I pretty much agree with the Youtube poster. I probably stand apart from the opinions of the listeners here from the sound of it.
  4. My wonderful wife recently received a nice bonus at work and gifted me with $200.00 to spend however I please. Needless to say, I'm tempted to spend a large chunk, if not all of it, on new music. What to do, what to do...? I'm tempted to spring for the Gillespie Mosaic box but I think I might be more inclined to sit tight and wait for a nice deal on the Universal sets if or when they eventually make themselves available at a discount. A couple of sets that jump onto my radar are the Sonny Rollins Freelance box or the Joe Henderson Milestone Years box. (Anyone selling one?) I was also inspired by the Woody Shaw thread and am interested in the 4 volumes of his live material on Highnote or a combination of some of his other dates on 32.Jazz. Decisions, decisions... What would you do with $200.00 of guilt-free money burning a hole in your pocket?
  5. I'm with Guy. Hamilton was playing with the groove and even seemed to be injecting a little more fire than I'm accustomed to hearing from him. When Shorter came on, the song seemed to take a drastic left turn. He was way too far outside the groove and it brought the number to a screeching halt for me. I couldn't even finish listening to his solo.
  6. Very nice! I've never heard of or seen this one.
  7. It'a a Red Allen set with a picture of Red Nichols on the cover.
  8. I called Mosaic yesterday. We have to wait another two weeks untill this set will be available. Just as well, I suppose. I called Mosaic again and got the same answer: we'll have to wait another 1-2 weeks. I received an email today telling me this has finally shipped!!! 'bout time! Let us know what you think.
  9. I've always been intrigued by postsecret.com and check it each week as they update the page each Sunday. Similar in flavor is foundmagazine.com where people post things/pictures/notes they have found in various places.
  10. I remember way back when when I wore platform shoes and had a pair of cuffed, bell-bottomed pants in a red, white and blue plaid. I thought they were so cool (they actually did fit in with the times) and I was proud to wear them, even excited to wear them because they looked cool and made me feel cool. After a while, they weren't as cool as they used to be and eventually, I wouldn't even wear them. Fads come and go and my tastes and ability to make good choices fluctuate as well. I can't think of a single thing or image that is so compelling to me that I feel I must etch it onto my body permanently. I've never had a tattoo and I never will. I'd take the fact that you've been indecisive about doing it and indecisive about what design you'd like for over 4 years to be a warning flag. You've made it 38 years without one, why start now? What would it mean to you or what would it commemorate that would make this act or image so ultimate that you'd be willing to commit to having it on your body for as long as you live? Is it still going to be cool when you're 50? 60? 70? This is just one man's opinion but I would recommend not doing it.
  11. Up with price reductions.
  12. The Fleischer Popeye's are considered classics, and yes, TV is where I first saw them, too. The cartoons are one thing -- well-animated and amusingly voiced, if repetitive -- but the original newspaper comic strip by E.C. Segar is one of the all-time greats. Jazz and culture critic Martin Williams once wrote a nice tribute to the strip. It's currently being re-issued in nice-looking volumes by Fantagraphics Books (the same folks doing the complete Peanuts -- and, by the way, Charles Schulz was a fan of Segar's Popeye, too). Yes!! I was trying to get the whole collection of dailies and Sundays in a paperback edition put out by Fantagraphics/Nemo Bookshelf which had gone out of print before I ever discovered them. The paperbacks could be had for a fairly reasonable amount here and there but the hardbacks were way out of my price range as anyone selling them charged a pretty big premium for them since they were out of print. I wasn't able to find or acquire all the volumes and then I discovered that they were reprinting them again so I sold all the editions I had and plan to pick up the new ones as they come out. I think Vol. 2 is going to be available in November 2007.
  13. The Basie box was the standard square Universal set identical to the Mosaic big boxes.
  14. If you own a home it's probably covered under your homeowner's insurance. If you have a huge collection with a lot of rare or OOP CDs you may want to check with your agent and they may suggest a rider to cover them. In any event, you'll probably want an accurate and up to date inventory list and may want to file that with the insurance agent. I'd be curious to know how an insurance company would evaluate the value as I'm sure there are probably a lot of irreplacables and wouldn't make it under "replacement cost".
  15. 1036 CDs unlistened to!!!!!!!!! Getting out of hand?!?!
  16. I'm finishing up this set with discs 7 and 8. This Mosaic was so good I think I'll listen to it one more time!!
  17. I ordered this one (for only $15.00 delivered!) to remedy my total lack of anything Artie Shaw in my collection. Now it's time to quit buying for a while.
  18. I laughed when I read this because it's the exact same reasoning I use when I try to justify to myself spending a tidy sum on a box set! Still, I'd only want about half the box for making my own master takes set so I'd rather borrow it than buy it which is generally frowned upon. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has it or who would ever buy it.
  19. This isn't exactly TV on DVD but it's TV where I saw and came to love these old Popeye cartoons as a child. I really think I want to get this when it comes out July 31st. These old Fleischer versions of the muttering/mumbling Popeye were so much better than lame color 60's version.
  20. I was intrigued by what I read here about the Steeplechase set so I checked it out and found it to look like a pet-peeve nightmare. I think I counted 72 tracks over 8 discs and only 39 of them are unique. (in the sense that they aren't alternative takes) Nearly half of the tracks are alternative takes and they are sequenced all together so you'd have 2 or 3 versions of the same song playing in a row!! At least the Prestige box set spread it's alternative takes around so that you might not even notice they were there. This set might be cool for completists but I think I'd find it tedious and way too expensive for what you'd actually be getting out of it. I don't suppose we'd ever see a comprehensive master-takes box from Steeplechase?
  21. Thanks for the info guys. My music budget is pretty much shot right now. I'll probably have to sit this one out unless a great [can't pass it up] deal comes along or the budget situation improves which might be a while.
