Seen: Complete Charlie Parker on Verve, used for $75
RDK replied to Big Al's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Aside from all the alternate takes, is there anything on the 10-CD set that isn't on the 3-CD set? Don't think the Philharmonic stuff is on the box. There's certainly every reason in the world to get the box, but you can also buy the bulk of the music (perhaps not all the alternates) in other configurations these days. I think I have 95% of what's on the box covered by smaller box sets or individual discs. -
Nevertheless, Angie is pretty darn hot!

Word. Word is right. As some of you may know, I work in the moving pitcher business and am surrounded by this sort of shit every day. And yet I'm rarely exposed to the sort of tabloid-driven celebrity gossip shit that you "civilians" ( ) always complain about. If you don't want to hear about Angelina, Brad, Beniffer, or whomever, don't read the tabloids and stay away from shows like Entertainment Tonight. Yeah, I know, some of the bigger celebs spill over into the mainstream press, but what can i say? They sell papers. Just ignore them.

No question that the music's worth it, but it contains a lot of alternates, so depending on your tastes you might want to consider the 3-disc Complete Parker on Verve (or whatever it's called; in that funky metal tin). Mastering may or may not be better as well. -
Fuck! That doesn't work either. I'll have to try from home. Must be something funky going on here on my office network...

That is weird. Every time i try the link i get redirected here... http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/artist.aspx?aid=2800 Can someone post a direct link to the book or t-shirt?
-
I'm serious. What are you guys seeing that I don't? All I get is a redirect to the Verve site.
-
What's the deal with this link? I keep getting redirected to the Verve site. Anyway, so far the opening of Horace's vault is much like when Geraldo finally got into Capone's.

Movie: Johnny Cash's Walk The Line

I don't agree that it had anything to do with licensing and/or money either - I think it was a deliberate choice on the part of the director not to dub in Cash's vocals. I find such stuff incredibly distracting (though I'll admit it was done very well in Ray, when it was actually done that way in Ray). By your logic, Allen, I don't want anybody up on stage not exactly looking like Cash either. I wouldn't have made the movie unless I could get Johnny Cash to play all different ages of himself since there's no way Phoenix could have stood in for him. Also, it sounds like you haven't seen the flick yet. Please don't base Phoenix's singing on any soundtrack CDs you might have heard. I agree 100% that he's no Cash and they never should have released a CD of his vocals - who would even buy such a thing when real Johnny Cash CDs are available? I think Phoenix's vocals work well in the context of the movie, but there's no reason to hear him aping Cash on the radio. -
If you're too poor to buy CDs, then stick to used LPs! It worked for me through college.

From all accounts, it wasn't Phoenix's decision, but the director/producer's. Phoenix was apparently reluctant to do them; it had nothing to do with vanity. For what it's worth, I'm glad that he did them rather than dub in Johnny. -
Thankyouthankyouthankyou for posting this! There was another thread about this some time ago, but I searched for it recently and couldn't find it. Nor could i find any info on it (at the time) on Crypto's site. Anyhow, I'm certainly hoping to go, so if all's well I should see at least Adam there.

For a minute there I thought that was the title of Cecil Taylor's new CD.

A chill just went up my spine thinking what the current administration might do with this issue should it ever interest them...

Amazingly, it's the highest-grossing drama of the year. A very good film. -
I will try to be there as well. Sadly, I just heard about his passing yesterday.

My beef is more with orphaned works... or more generically those works which are not profitable enough to exploit by the rights-holders and end up languishing because no one can legally utilize them even for free. I actually don't have much of a problem with anyone - RCA with Elvis recordings or Disney with Mouse cartoons - retaining copyrights and exploiting them for as long or as much as possible (though obviously some limit should be required). Provided, that is, that they actively use their creations and keep them available for others to access. I also believe that "fair use" restrictions need to be relaxed in some instances, such as for documentary filmmakers (anyone remember the "ring tone" issue?).

The problem with a list like this, of course, is that it's really hard to argue that (m)any of these top 50 names don't deserve to be on the list - most of these pianists are pretty damn good. (There are a few, however, that I'm unfamiliar with, such as John Bunch and Derek Smith.) One can definitely argue about the rankings, though, and at least Alexander, Green, and Previn don't belong anywhere near the top 10. And by omitting any of the more "modern" pianists such as Andrew Hill and Cecil Taylor (even though I don't personally care for CT all that much) proves just how conservative the author is in his musical tastes. This is far from a balanced list. And Jarrett down at number 50? Looks like a thrown bone to me. Anyhow, of these fifty men and women, who would you leave out and who would you replace them with?

Not ten minutes after I switched from the local news (where his death led) to a Tivo'd Entourage, there popped up Chris Penn, in the boxing ring with Drama. Chris was a young guy - 40 is right - but man, he'd sure put on some weight since last i saw him. RIP

Words to live by. Oh I get it now! Duh. And here I thought Jim was talking about sex.

But I've gotta ask - the Devil makes me do it - would some of these "non-mainstream/commercial" artists we here enjoy be better off with the few bucks that might come from an extra CD sale or with the additional exposure that "sharing" might bring them? I suspect it's something of both. I can only say from personal experience that if friends didn't loan me (or burn if we're being honest here) certain CDs by both jazz and non-jazz artists over the years that there'd be a big number of artists whom I wouldn't now be familiar with and support when I can, either by buying their music or paying for a live show.

All of this makes me fondly recall the old days, when we actually invited each other to our homes to listen to music together...
