  1. Was just about to say almost the same thing. Still, I understand the thread and could toss in a few names myself. I have many albums by Jackie McLean and Dexter Gordon both, but there are few of them that I really love (the McLean BN Mosaic is a notable exception; I love that period). I have a fair amount of Anthony Braxton as well, but I have to really be in the mood to listen to them - and even then I often feel that I'm "studying" him more than just listening to and enjoying him. As for pianists, folks like Tommy Flannigan and Teddy Wilson tend to bore me except occasionally as sidemen.
  2. Really! I mean autographing it is fine, but that other thing? Not so much.
  3. Happy Birthday, if I'm not too late!
  4. Yeah, the 70s all over again, but we've also been spoiled by the CD reissue boom. The upside, in this case, is that it's much easier to "find" oop CDs (or downloads) than ever before. In my case, there are few BN albums that I still need/want. Meanwhile, I've been buying several hundred CDs over the last year - used and/or cutouts - for just a buck or two, often from foreign and/or indie labels that I'd never even seen at retail. I've been buying lots of newer music and investigating more younger/unknown artists than ever before. It's been liberating to finally break the Blue Note "classic jazz" habit.
  5. Sold! I've been putting off buying this for far too long.
  6. Well, I'd argue that what we often "do best here" is, um, argue. And yeah, those ain't the hands of any carpenter I've ever met.
  7. My two cents: * I really don't care if someone is a member merely to hawk his wares. Everyone has different reasons to join a forum. That said, I wouldn't necessarily trust him more than I would any Ebay seller. * While it's generally not cool to criticize a seller's sales price, I don't think BM crossed the line with his post (per how he said he stated it). That said, I don't think a rule about it is necessarily in order. If someone wants to be a dick about it and routinely criticize, so be it - and I'll trust other board members for calling him out on it. (And I'll add that I don't think, in this case, BM was being dickish about it.) * Yes, it bothers me that BM's post was deleted. I don't think it was necessary per the reasons given above.
  8. Thanks all. Last week was pretty bad, but I returned to work today and the guys took me out for BBQ for lunch, so things are already looking up.
  9. Happy birthday, fellow D-Dayer!
  10. Thanks guys, I really do appreciate it. Birthday celebration's gonna have to wait a few days though. It's been a pretty trying week. My mom died last Tuesday (quite unexpectedly, but fortunately quickly) and my sister got into a car accident while driving down to meet us (fortunately nobody was hurt despite two cars being totaled). Not all tragic news, though, as my brother-in-law is getting married today (further eclipsing my day dammit!). Ray
  11. Grabbed this from Amie Street a few days ago. Sounds great so far!
  12. Exactly. I can just barely remember watching him on TV when I was young (and before politics might have colored my perceptions), but for whatever reason I always thought highly of him.
  13. I, at least, was being sarcastic.
  14. Justin Bieber's gonna be a force to be reckoned with once his voice changes.
  15. Indeed. Not that I have much use for it these days, but I recently picked up a once-$600 Nakamichi tape deck at a thrift store for just $10. Sounds wonderful.
  16. Agreed. The only "spam" I get are notifications that I've allowed, via settings, to receive. I think it's how like my dad, even after all these years, still hasn't figured out how to program the VCR.
  17. Exactly. I've been on FB for about two years now, have several hundred "friends," and rarely get email notifications that I don't want. The privacy settings are very customizable.
  18. As usual The fact that they are "cut-outs" is the reason they are so cheap. They don't notch them just to piss us off. And what do you mean by "digital copy tapes?" These are exactly the same Fantasy/Prestige/OJC stuff that Fantasy (and now Concord) has been selling for years. Most of it sounds very good. Yes, fulfillment was spotty at first, but I eventually got almost everything I ordered and was never charged for items that didn't ship. Again:
  19. I was thinking this!
  20. Oh yeah! Those EC covers he did were terrific. I always wished he had done more comic stories, but like so many others I was a huge fan of his sci-fi/fantasy book covers.
  21. One mention, almost in passing: "To many expert ears, compressed music files produce a crackly, tinnier and thinner sound than music on CDs and certainly on vinyl." This is true to some degree, yes, but it seems most "experts," when they make this claim, listen to 128 kbps files using old codecs that did sound bad... but have been greatly improved over the years. I now have a hard time distinguishing even 192 kpbs files, though I usually rip at even higher quality just to be safe. There's no doubt that listening to CDs and LPs on a good home stereo system is better than mp3 files on an iPod or boombox, but mp3 files per se don't need to sound bad. I'm more concerned and find more fault in maximized/overly compressed mastering these days - now that crushes all life out of the music imo.
  22. Same here! My heart stopped!
  23. Guess you're one of those "glass is half empty" kind of guys...
  24. I enjoyed it too, but just barely; it wasn't nearly as good as the first one.
