I thought it was a pretty bad week overall. It's also ridiculous when the judges keep telling everyone to be more relevant and sing "modern" that the producers force them to sing 50-year old songs. Face it, crooning Sinatra-style is not what these kids do (nor should it be). It's no better than when Sinatra tried to sing more rock/pop songs in the late 60s and 70s - often with horrible results. Overall, I did think that Lee and Crystal were the best of the night though. I've been really impressed with Lee's development over the weeks; it's been fun to see him come into his own. Connick was a terrific mentor. There's some talk about him being a good replacement for Simon next year.

Oh Chewy, don't be spreading that Barry Diamant/Steve Hoffman Forum bullshit around here. Yeah, a few dopes will believe anything; doesn't make it true. added: It seems Barry's reputation is already fairly public knowledge! Heh.

Shhh. Don't tell anyone, but it's a story - they make them all up as they go along.

I love Haden, but like so many others I can't come up with a singular "favorite." Probably Mingus, but even then it'd be more for his writing and band-leading.

McCartney to reissue solo catalog on Concord!?!?!
RDK replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Paul's got a bunch of good (and some great) songs, but few good solo albums imo. Through BATR, most of the albums are okay - and I've got a soft spot for London Town as well - but for my money a really good post-Beatles 2-CD comp is the best you'll ever get. -
mono or stereo? Blue Notes from Classic Records and/or Analogue Prods.
RDK replied to hard bop head's topic in Audio Talk
While it may be preferable to sum to mono (if only to reduce noise), I've never found it "unsatisfactory" to play mono LPs through a stereo rig. A good new pressing should also have minimal noise (ticks pops, etc), so I really wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't recall what the Classics go for ($30 maybe?), but if you have a recording that you really love and want the vinyl of it, I'd recommend springing for the AP 45s. They really do sound great. In any case, the nice thing about summing to mono is the y-cable is cheap. -
From the article Marcello posted above... I'm always a bit fascinated and confused by thinking such as this. So the Society wanted the recordings only for their "private archives?" What does that mean exactly - and how's that any different from me bootlegging a concert if I don't intend to share or sell it? The "historian/archivist" side of me wishes that we could all just ignore copyright/royalty concerns and just release historical stuff like this for all to enjoy, but obviously that's not fair to the performers... though they did presumably get paid for these gigs in many cases 40+ years ago. I guess I just don't understand the point of a Jazz Society recording performances but having no intention of doing anything with them.

Nels Cline
RDK replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Yeah- he's the reason I became re-interested in Wilco after AM (I like Tweedy's Uncle Tupelo countryish roots but completely lost interest when he wanted to become Brian Wilson). Funny how a lot of Wilco fans don't like his "noodling". Huh. Most Wilco fans I know love Nels' playing. -
Let me know where/when tonight. I should be able to make it.

Damn, I've got a car but have to work. Not sure if I can get away, but if any dinner/hook-up plans are made for Thursday night, drop me a line; I'd love to meet up for a drink, sammich, or something.

Late, Thanks for the tip. I was all ready to drop iTunes prices on these two. Makes you wish Amazon would play hardball with Apple and start charging $.75 (or less) a tune and an equivalently lower per album price. They just did went to "war" with Walmart over book pricing, so it's not like it's out of the question. Lots of Mal available on Emusic as well, much of it quite cheap.

For those who haven't seen 'em live, the band is pretty terrific. I missed them last month, but have seen them a couple of times before and they always put on a great - and very fun! - show.

She's cute! And damn, that is one suggestive cover!

Received my Threadgill box today. I can hardly believe how quickly it got here - especially considering it recently cost me $25 to get a box to Canada... and it took over two weeks to get there.
-
I've a few of Weiss' albums and like them quite a bit, but his liner notes can be hilariously self-serving.
-
The Haden box would be a must for me but I think I have all the albums already. Highly recommended!
-
Can you use it in a sentence?
-
Would that include 10 minutes of audience slow hand-clapping? Better yet, all audience applause "encores" combined onto a bonus disc!
-
Thanks for the tip! Couldn't pass up the Threadgill at that price.

Jarrett's been one of my favorite pianists for nearly 30 years now, and I finally got to see him live (with his trio) last year. I figured I had to do it once, and it was a perfectly great show, but I came armed with a pocketful of cough drops and I have to admit I was a bit nervous about coughing during his performance and "ruining" it. He seemed to be in a good mood that night, though, and (maybe because he was with the trio) the few audience sounds didn't appear to bother him. But I'm with WorldB3: I'll still buy his discs and cherish his music but it's too expensive and stressful (for me!) to see him in person again.

I agree. Now there's a whole generation growing up believing that Jane Austen fought zombies and Abe Lincoln not only freed the slaves but thwarted a vampire invasion as well. At least that's what I read in a Texas textbook. Must be true.
