16 out of 20. Better than I expected. I have to admit, I thought this was gonna be a smilie survey. In that case, I figured I'd at least be able to do better than Chuck.

here 'tis Which one's Oil? Who cares? I'm just glad one of them's not Leroy!

Not a huge fan, but "I Saw the Light" is one great pop song.

Goodness, I can see why: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...54587&BAB=E That cover could singlehandedly be used in sevreal threads here: Good, Bad, Inappropriate, and Sexy Babes...

It's tonight, Valerie - Thursday the 14th. The first post was from last year; i just bumped the thread. Click on the link in post #2 for more info. Sorry, I realize it now seems a bit confusing.

Concord Shutting Fantasy Down and Burying its Tapes?
RDK replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This is just plain wrong. While certainly not lossless, I've found most emusic files to be pretty good quality ever since they upgraded their encoding a few years back. As for sources, I'd bet that, yes, they used the original OJC CDs for ripping, but they also have available most of the new remasters as well: the RVG and Kepnews series, for example. And a lot of people find the "inferior first generation remasters" superior to some of the later reissues. Don't swallow the 24-bit hype without a chaser of skepticism. -
About what? His playing, or his albums? Huh? What? Has Chuck hijacked your account?

Concord Shutting Fantasy Down and Burying its Tapes?
RDK replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It is indeed, Stuart. He's posted here to clear a few things up... http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost...p;postcount=212 Could you copy/paste that here? Nonmembers of the Hoffman forum can't see that. Thanks! Sorry. Here you go... Hello Steve Hoffman Forum members, This is Stuart Kremsky of Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group signing in to this thread for the one and only time. First things first: The entire building was never locked out. Not all Fantasy/Concord employees in Berkeley have lost their jobs. Most everything else on this thread, however, is true. As part of my professional duties, it was my responsibility to inform various people in the industry about changes in the Fantasy vault. Clearly, Steve Hoffman is one of those people. I half-forgot about this web-site when I called him. Because there was a lot of information to impart, and because I’ve probably spoke too quickly, some of the details as reported on this thread were wrong. Please note the following: I have absolutely NO intention of participating in any further discussion on this thread. I have neither the time nor the energy, nor would be it be appropriate for me to make any speculations whatsoever. But I felt like this was the easiest way to clear a few things up. Here’s what I can tell you: Fantasy Studios in Berkeley are being closed. They’re not taking any bookings after September 30, and unless someone takes over the operations, it appears that they’ll spend the rest of the year until December 31 shutting down. The Fantasy tape vault is also being closed, and the tapes are being sent to an Iron Mountain facility. The studio staff and myself were informed of this on Friday, June 1. As we were sitting in the meeting, workers from Iron Mountain, along with a locksmith, were in the parking lot, waiting to begin the work of bar-coding the tapes. Since Iron Mountain was now directly responsible for the tapes (and some artwork as well in another location in the building), they changed several locks in the building. It took a few days to sort out legal and access issues. So that’s all there is about the keys and the building; no one was ever locked out, except for me, out of the vault, for a couple of hours one morning. I’m over it. The Concord Music Group does still have a small presence in Berkeley. How long that will last I have no idea. I will be with Fantasy/Concord until September 30. I have to thank Steve H. for all the praise he sent in my direction in this thread. You're welcome. And yes, the “Lisa found it” goad did work, once or twice. I’d also like to thank everyone in this forum for their thoughts and their love of the music. And while I have no wish at all to inhibit or influence this thread in any way, I’d like you all to think for a second about the weirdness of having your job (or lack of same) coming up for public discussion. Thanks! -
I'm a fan, too, though I haven't listen as much lately as I did 10 or 20 years ago. Terrific player whose only "fault" (if one considers it a fault) is that he's very eclectic and doesn't often stick with one style for very long. Thus you have his fine playing on various BN albums of the 60s; his more "outside" work with Braxton, Altschul, etc; his "Latin" period and his exquisite RTF albums on ECM (I don't care for his later RTF discs); and various trios and quartets, both acoustic and electric (much prefer the acoustic stuff myself). Of the last 10-15 years or so, I've only really cared for him in an acoustic trio setting, but that's just me. Like Metheny, Chick seems determined to cater to all crowds... and this is a problem for some to accept.

Happy Birthday Kevin Bresnahan

Happy B-day, Kevin! -
I know you can't beat the price if that $140 tv is correct, but I'd put the $500 for the sound system into a bigger, wider, HD ready TV and forget about surround sound until later.
-
Yeah, got this email earlier today too. Not sure why they're doing something like this as a "limited edition" through Rhino Handmade. Higher price point I guess. And do I need this if I already have the 8-disc Atlantic Rhythm & Blues box? I haven't had a chance to compare track lists yet.

Eight years and what do get? Meadow is late for dinner...

It's being reported on the Hoffman forum that Concord is firing its Fantasy Records vault archivist, shuttering its mastering studio, and shipping off its tapes to Iron Mountain. Don't know how accurate this news is, but it doesn't sound good. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=116530

Paris Hilton Goin' To The Big House

Not over yet... http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/...=la-home-center -
And I now have it on very good authority that Hodges was born in 1907--so this year is his centenary. Either way, it's worth celebrating again!
-
My bad. I was thinking of Montara. Medina/Spiral is actually a really fine disc.

I'm not so sure I'd look for a payoff or other conspiracy in this. The press - and by press I mostly mean tabloids - are gonna dig deep into this one for any improprieties. Perhaps not entirely legit, but there was a lot of talk about Paris getting a much tougher sentence than most receive for such violations. Maybe not sentence itself but jail time. The jails are supposedly so overcrowded here in L.A. that most nonviolent felons with less than a 60 day sentence are processed and kicked almost immediately. Either way, it doesn't look good. -
There is some very obvious irony in the fact that some of us seem disparaging of some of the previously-unreleased BN recordings that Lion didn't see fit to release in the first place. I love to buy the unreleased stuff too - and I'll be getting most of these - but we should probably have lowered expectations for some of these. I'm just sayin'...

So you're saying that they're secretly indoctrinating kids into a religious cult while tens of thousands of other kids are partying and listening to music outside?
-
Well it's official. I now have more friends here than in real life!
-
I've heard a few of them and they sound fabulous (I was even in the room when Hoffman and Kevin Grey cut one of them!). But they're too expensive for my taste. Still, I've been meaning to pick up a few of the more "offbeat" titles (like the ones that aren't rereleased every other month).
