Me too, but I think he is better recorded on Expectations. Guy

HG -- I completely agree with you about Haden's playing on Science Fiction -- it's incredible. He recorded Expectations* with Keith Jarrett around the same time and his playing there is just as great. Guy ps I mention this album specifically because it's also on Columbia, and Charlie has a very similar sound on it.

???? Was that meant as a compliment? I hear little or no personality in Ron Carter's playing, so perhaps it was meant as a compliment, but I doubt it. I'd trade every Ron Carter solo in my collection for a few bars of Mingus. I have to agree with Paul. All I have to say is that is a weird comment, and if it was intended as an insult, I guess I've heard everything. Guy

Charlie is really fantastic on "War Orphans" from the Motian album Tribute (ECM). Guy
  5. Let's not jump to a hasty conclusion. How many Mosaics does he own? Guy
  6. Ilgauskas is usually a much better shooter. Guy
  7. Understandable - he is a cult figure in rock. Those 13th Floor Elevator records are slightly campy and horribly recorded, but they are also (IMO) among the best of the aggressive psych records of the 60s. The song "You're Gonna Miss Me" had to have been one of the heaviest things that had been recorded at the time. It is a great tune, but I thought the rest of the album wasn't at the same level. Guy
  8. Possible, but I doubt it. Spurs didn't look THAT dominant today. Guy
  9. That's cool, Guy. I just think it's really freaky (and not in a good way). And that's why I like it. It seems a total antithesis to what Coltrane would have wanted. And for some bizarre reason, that makes it really interesting to me. Not to mention how it is almost completely unrelated, stylistically, to the music within. It looks more like something you'd find on a 80's Speed/Death metal album cover, not on a cover of a musician who was more about peace and enlightenment. And that completely fucked up juxtaposition will always win over a demented mind like mine. Either way, you can't argue against the overall artistic beauty of the drawing. Or, maybe you can............ Isn't a very similar album cover for a Sonny Stitt? I definitely dig the Stellar Regions cover, however. I assume that's a painting, not a photograph? Guy
  10. Like shit. Who better than Gene Harris to play a set of late night blues? Its fine if people don't particularly care for this record, but there should be no doubt that it is the perfect combination of musicians and tunes. Woah tiger! I like this album a lot, just asking an innocent question. Guy
  11. I've gotta emphatically disagree with you, Scott. That one is horrible! Guy
  12. I wonder what this would have sounded like with a different rhythm section. Guy
  13. I'm guessing this cannibalized sales from both the other compilations, and from future compilation sales. Interesting question: over the long horizon (say, 10-20 years), will the number of Beatles compilation discs sold increase because of Beatles 1? Guy
  14. I have this album, and while I agree that most of it is pretty bad, there are a few good tracks. Guy

  16. Yes. But both of these compilations were released 35 years ago. Guy
  17. Brownie, can't you go to their headquarters and check things out? I thought Italy was just down the street from you. Guy
  18. I haven't heard this one, but imagine that it could be pretty bad: Also, until I googled the above I had never seen this (which is probably too good to qualify for this thread): Definitely the best titled album of 1964/65. Guy
  19. Yup, I remember reading that. Guy
  20. I'm only familiar with his compositions on Moanin', as well as the tunes "Whisper Not", "Stablemates" and "I Remember Clifford". So if he's done better elsewhere, I may eventually re-evaluate... Guy
  21. Somebody posted the following to AAJ: I really hope this is a screwup on the part of The New Yorker -- can anybody dispel or (gulp) confirm this rumor? Guy
  22. It was part of the Connoisseur Series but is now OOP. I like it! Guy
