  1. I'm listening to Cornbread right now -- I think this is a better album. Guy
  2. The '89 quake is a really vivid memory for me. I also remember a '99 quake that was way out in the SE California desert but shook my place in San Diego quite a bit -- it was late at night. My parents live pretty close to the Hayward Fault, which is also expected to have a "big one" in the near geological future. Guy
  3. The lineup isn't as appealing to me as last year's. I don't think I'll be going this time. Guy
  4. John Kelman over at AAJ is maintaining a future releases page. It's a little hard to navigate. I miss jazzmatazz. Guy
  5. I've had this album for several years and its appeal (particularly that of the title track) is mostly lost on me. I have nothing against this type of music -- I love "Sombrero Sam", "The Turnaround", "Adam's Apple", "Right Now", "Una Mas", "Common Mama", etc. But "The Sidewinder" has a lackluster theme, a mediocre groove, and unremarkable playing from the musicians involved. At best it could probably be interchanged with other BN albums of that era. I've been so disappointed by the title track that I probably haven't paid enough attention to the rest of the album. "Totem Pole" is much better than the title track. Guy
  6. I'm a little dubious about the actions/statement attributed to Tony. At the very least, I'm guessing that it is being either taken out of context, embellished after the fact, and/or exaggerated in importance. The Plugged Nickel music wasn't a radical break with Miles's earlier music -- it was a very natural progression from what the Quintet was playing in 1964. Guy
  7. 30s Ellington Charles Lloyd Discovery
  8. One of the best he's written and I'm a regular Sportsguy reader. He really nails the entire problem with the NBA right now. The sad thing is, I don't think they care. This cracked me up:
  9. Elaborate -- I've never even heard of this guy. Guy
  10. congrats, Paul. Guy
  11. With less than 2 minutes left, fouling Shaq when he doesn't have the ball results in 1 free throw plus the fouled team getting the ball back. Guy
  12. Josh Howard blew the game with his missed free throws. The timeout was just icing on the cake. Though that "foul" on Wade at the end was preposterous. Guy
  13. From tradesports.com: Series winner Dallas 65.3-66.0% Miami 32.5-34.4% Heat in 6 17.2-18.4% Heat in 7 15.5-16.2% Mavs in 7 35.2-37.2% Mavs in 6 29.1-31.4% tonight's winner: Miami 56.5-57.0%
  14. It definitely wasn't as bad a foul as Raja Bell's on Kobe, or James Posey's on Hinrich. But maybe Bruce's claim about how the NBA perceives this foul is correct. Guy
  15. One thing I realized today -- I think "Ballad for Doll" was the first ballad to appear on any of Jackie's BN albums. He really became a masterful ballad player as the 60s continued. Guy
  16. Any particular 70s Abercrombie you like to recommend to me? Thanks. Gateway and Timeless, both on ECM. Guy
  17. I just listened to Ming for the first time. More mainstream than what I was expecting, but sounds pretty good. I have Murray's Steps lying around and I'll probably give it a listen next month. If I like these then I'll be on the lookout for Home. Guy
  18. Shaq was OK tonight. A solid game, but nothing remarkable by his standards. The Mavs couldn't buy a basket (31.6% shoooting), it's as simple as that. Hopefully they'll wake up by Sunday. Guy
  19. Sony/Legacy has more info on this box: Forecast: not going to buy it.
  20. You could see him burning up inside at the end of game 3. Guy
  21. Hey, that's cool...if Phil floats your boat it's all good. He just doesn't happen to float mine, it sank. I can tolerate some of the Genesis material like ABACAB but have never liked the solo material. Count me in as an Abacab fan though I don't like the Genesis albums after that one. Phil's 1st solo album isn't terrible. Guy
  22. OK. I don't hear more or less femininity/masculinity/androgyneity in his music than in any other instrumental music. Guy
  23. Why is Ornette's music androgynous? Guy
