  1. I think the semifinals will be more interesting than the conference finals this year. Guy
  2. No, I don't think that makes sense. What I was thinking is if you pick the Spurs to beat the Kings in 7 you get 5 pts. If the Spurs beat the Kings in 6, or lose to the Kings in 7 (you are off by 1 game), you get 3 pts. If the Spurs beat the Kings in 5, or lose to the Kings in 6 (you are off by 2 games), you get 1 pt. Guy
  3. A large chunk of the studio recordings box is dedicated to the quartet's 1965 recordings, which tend to be somewhat-to-very adventurous. (The earlier recordings are more conservative -- in some cases, even more conservative than the Atlantics.) However, none of it is as challenging to the ears as Ascension or Meditations. If you're concerned you might want to pick up the albums individually, though this path might be more expensive. Or it might not, I haven't done the math. The music on the Vanguard box is, again, relatively adventurous. Coltrane was an explorer on stage. In this case, however, you won't be shocked by anything if you enjoy A Love Supreme. The music on both boxes is extremely essential. Guy
  4. This is a nice album, though at this point I haven't been quite knocked out. Elias is impressive as everyone else has said. She reminds me a lot of Keith Jarrett on "Snow". Guy
  5. Good luck, Tom... that's cool that you are taking the initiative on something like this. Guy
  6. As much as I'd love to see Kobe and my Lakers serve you up a big shitburger to eat, I know Phoenix is just plain better. Go Lakers. Jon, If you want you can make fun of the Warriors as much as you want... Guy
  7. The way they've been playing, they're going to need lots of encouragement! Guy
  8. Highlight of last night's episode:
  9. This is a good team. Guy
  10. then what makes jazz different from other musics ? Two z's. Guy
  11. Isn't Your Music like BMG or Columbia House issues, with different packaging (sometimes substantially different, in the case of box sets)?? Can't cite specific examples, but years ago when a college roommate of mine was a BMG club member, the stuff he got wasn't always the same as the "legit" issue, and I seem to remember a couple box-sets he got were long-box style, instead of being just like the version you could buy in stores. (And then there's that "club" stuff that's in place of the barcode -- not that I love barcodes, but I dislike the "club CD" text even more.) $40 is a steep price to pay for no bar code! Guy
  12. Will do. The Threadgill thread (say it 15 times fast) made me do it. Guy
  13. Wow, the Bulls are battling back! ps Nocioni, 104-108, wowwowwow. pps Oh well. Elton Brand is a beast!
  14. The bastards charged me tax so it was a little more expensive than Late's order, but I got Paul Motian's Misterioso, Henry Threadgill's The Spirit of Nuff Nuff and the self-titled Old and New Dreams. The last one is probably a dicey proposition since there's a 50-50 chance they'll send me the ECM version instead. Guy
  15. Besides, Nursery Cryme is better than Foxtrot. Guy
  16. Why? Guy i don't see anywhere else for jazz to go. for the most part modern entertainment delivered to the home only succeeds if it can be segmented and delivered hyperthreaded in hyperspeed. live events need only prove that the swift virtual segments that attached the audience actually exist in reality. the purpose of attending the live event is not the event. the purpose is to validate a lifestyle element already adopted within the home or social circle This seems arbitrary to me. I don't see jazz having any "core proposition". Guy
  17. Crazy Ron is suspended for one game. Guy
  18. yourmusic.com has it for $5.99. Guy
  19. Does anyone here have a way of contacting Berigan? Guy
  20. I only followed it on gamecast. What happened? Nice to see Kobe lose. I figure that the Clippers will get better as their series progresses. Question of the day: why is Miami so overrated? Guy
  21. I guess I don't really see the big deal with this screw up. It's kind of funny, actually, and if I didn't already own an 80s McMaster I would definitely spring for a copy. Guy
  22. This is a great album. I can't help wondering "what if", but Roy does a phenomenal job. And Trane is on fire -- this is a hotter performance than Live at Birdland. Guy
  23. LeBron is having an impressive game -- more than halfway toward his first playoff triple double. On the other hand Arenas is missing a lot of shots. I'm glad. Guy ps Well, it looks like he did get the triple double. And to think this is only a "good" performance from the guy -- I pity the team that faces him on a really good day. Arenas threw up a brickfest. Since the Spurs are only leading by 27 right now I guess the Kings have made some inroads since halftime. The bulls are hanging in there so far.
