  1. Dude, I thought you were all into the house scene. Surely you know what a scatter is, no?
  2. Just heard that Dock Ellis passed away at the age of 63: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3782859 "We are family..." R.I.P., Dock... may your spirit continue to soar!
  3. Nice! Only one album is showing up so far, but hopefully the others won't be far behind! Cheers, Shane
  4. Oh, that definitely is the case in Jamaica as well. As huge a fan of ska as I am, very very few people in Jamaica give a rats ass about all of the great stuff recorded in the '60s. That's "old" music, and of little use to them. The same can be said of the rocksteady and early roots reggae recorded in the '60s and early '70s as well. The folks in Jamaica today have moved on from all of that... and quite rightly, too. As you say, they acknowledge it (and respect it)... but the musicians there have definitely moved on. Cheers, Shane
  5. It's funny, I generally hate the clarinet, but I really dig the bass clarinet (Dolphy and Rivers especially). I also have little to no use for the flute, violin, and/or tuba in most instances... although sometimes they do the job.
  6. Here in L.A., it's got to be Amoeba Records. Unbelievable selection, HUGE store, lots of OOP items... It's heaven, I tells ya. Although, truth be told, I liked to browse at Aron's Records a bit more... there were some real gems in there from time to time... it's a shame they're gone. Cheers, Shane
  7. Jesus Rob, take it easy! That's a fairly harsh reaction to Berigan's questions on this particular subject, and not necessary in my opinion. Let it go... Cheers, Shane
  8. Thanks Jim! I just spent 12 downloads on this from eMusic, and it was money well spent! I loves me some Sly and Robbie when they are on, and this one's a good 'un. I'm groovin' on "Black House" and "Vibrationship"... although I gotta admit "Drama Inside" hits home pretty hard. For those that use eMusic, here's the link: http://www.emusic.com/album/Amp-Fiddler-Sl...d/11288090.html Good stuff! Cheers, Shane
  9. That packaging looks waaaaayyyyyyy better than I thought it would. Maybe they're on to something here... I would purchase OOP releases packaged like that in a heartbeat. Cheers, Shane
  10. I wouldn't say you have a bad reputation necessarily, but (IMO) you do spout some off the wall stuff from time to time. The above is a good example... Why are you talking shit to a newcomer to the board who has a valid question? Personally, I'd like Bob to stick around the board as he certainly seems to care about the music... no need to give him grief over a question like this. Sorry to derail the thread... Cheers, Shane
  11. That particular suggestion I DO find offensive. Constructive criticism is welcome at all times, rudeness is not. Bob, Don't take anyting "helen fong" says too seriously. He has changed his "name" on this board several times, and has been known to spout some fairly innane things from time to time. My advice would be to just ignore him... don't let him put you off of what is an otherwise excellent bulletin board. As for your question, I don't have an answer... but I would be interested in any information you might find on this issue. Cheers, Shane
  12. Damn, man... don't you travel something like 350 days per year? How do you find the time to do all of that training? Cheers, Shane
  13. Agreed. That is why I have nothing to do with Mosaic. I don't trust a jazz reissue label with no sense of style or aesthetics. Whaaaaaa????
  14. Unfortunately, no. The Best Buy cards "expired" on Nov. 10, and the Circuit City cards "expired" in September. I use "expired" in quotes because you have 60 days from the date of activation of the card to select your tracks. I bought a boat load of BB cards a few weeks ago, and I have about 750 tracks left... a good chunk of them will be spent on the BS/SN releases! Cheers, Shane
  15. Sure, I get bored with those Blue Notes from time to time... but I often take that as I good sign that I'm up for exploring new things, new sounds. When was that Mobley album recorded, roughly 45 years ago? It was a great document of that music in that day... but man, that was 45 years ago! I love it, but I also know that I need fresh new things to keep my fire burning, you know? When I get bored of Mobley, I usually go out to listen to live music (and, more often than not, it's not jazz that I go see... more like punk, ska, reggae, etc. shows)... I find something new out there that kicks my ass (and, more/most often than not, the musicians I'm seeing couldn't even come close to holding a candle to Hank's level of musicianship), and that inner fire gets stoked. Then, after a few months, I put on that Mobley album again... and more often than not I get the rush of hearing that music... and falling in love with it all over again. It's not just jazz, and it's definitely not just the Blue Note albums... if I don't get to see LIVE music often enough, damned near every album I own will bore me after a while. That's why I'm grateful to be living in a place like LA, where I can see fantastic music every single night of the week if I'm so inclined. Hell, that's one of the reasons I moved here in the first place! Now if we could only get Organissimo to make a road trip out here... Cheers, Shane
  16. Yes, but what grade would you give for a paper with "lol" in it?
  17. Got damn! This is great!!! Thanks for posting this! Cheers, Shane
  18. Metallica, in Calgary, during their "...And Justice For All" tour. Had seats on the floor, next to a huge stack of amps. Left the gig (was great, BTW), drove home, went to sleep... and woke up an hour later with blood pouring out of my nose. I never get nosebleeds, so... thanks Metallica! I don't think my hearing has ever been the same since. Cheers, Shane
  19. Hi Jim, I don't see it on there, but hopefully it will appear soon. And, might I suggest that you put all of your albums on eMusic? I use eMusic quite a bit, and I find that if I buy an album on there of some band new to me (usually recommended by someone on a board like this), I end up looking for (and buying) ALL of that band's releases on eMusic. So, someone who buys Groovadelphia on eMusic is likely to buy all of your albums there. Just a suggestion... Cheers, Shane
  20. What , you don't think a guy with a Marsalis avatar would like Braxton ? Wait, that's Marsalis? I thought it was Erkel's head photoshopped on some trumpeter's body. Cheers, Shane
  21. Security cameras. I guess for me it would strictly be about the $$$... going to Amoeba and being accustomed to used prices has spoiled me whenever I see a place trying to charge $17.99 for a CD. Cheers, Shane
