  1. Uhmmmm... what? No, seriously... what???
  2. Just curious: Is the new organissimo on there yet? Nope, thankfully it's not on there... not yet, anyway. (Although I guess in some wierd way some might see that as a bad thing.) Cheers, Shane
  3. Chuck, Not to bring you down further, but I noticed that your AEC box was posted on a very large (probably the largest in terms of number of users) private tracker a little while ago. It was definitely a set of FLAC files, and as of now it had been downloaded over 250 times. But hey, the good news... the booklet wasn't posted! Unfortunately, there's no way anyone at the tracker would ever take the set down, no matter how much you might complain to them. Well, I guess if you spent hundreds of thousands of $$$ on lawyer fees they might listen... I symapthize with your plight, Chuck... but man, I just don't see any way the "old" model/philosophy is "coming back" in time for you to see any compensation. My only hope is that a "new" model can ensure that everyone can benefit somewhat (fan, artist, producer, etc.). Cheers, Shane
  4. Not to take too much away from Spain, but... I've seen more defense in the NBA All Star game than the Americans played last night. That was just appalling defense. When he's teaching defensive fundamentals, I'm sure Coach K won't be showing the video of this game to his players at Duke! But anyway... congrats to the US men for the win. And especially to the US men's volleyball team for their big win! Cheers, Shane
  5. Ah, the old "sport is the opiate of the masses" argument. Might well be true... Then again, it might well be bullshit. Two things common to all civilizations - sport & music. Two things common to more "advanced" civilizations - commercialization and exploitation of sport & music. In neither case are sport or music the problem. Not my opinion. Fact. Damn straight! The whole "sport (or religion) is the opiate of the masses" notion is simply garbage. As you stated, the sheep are the problem! I've always been somewhat perplexed (and amused) at how some folks in the worlds of sport and music come to view each other as enemies... musicians put down jocks, athletes laugh at musicians... when in reality the two worlds have so much in common! I love music and I love sport... but I ain't no damn sheep! Maybe I should make a bumper sticker outta that. Cheers, Shane
  6. As for whether anyone still pays attention to the Olympics, well... huge TV numbers for the Opening Ceremonies, and the numbers are good for the first couple of days of events. So, yes, I'd say lots of folks are paying attention here in the U.S.. Oh yeah, let's not forget a huge chunk of those 1.3 billion Chinese who are probably pretty amped about the whole thing (they do make up a fifth of the world ya know). Digression ---> When are the good folks at the TV corporations here in the U.S. going to stop using the notion of "market share" as a way of trying to know exactly how many people are watching? Given the rise of YouTube, torrenting, etc., I'd say that an ever-growing chunk of people (the younger among us, to be sure) watch in ways the "market share" just doesn't measure right now. Hell, I know of several "grey-area" websites that will link me directly to pretty much all (well most) of the major TV networks in the world. And I mean the world! So, the Neilsen ratings might provide us with some numbers, and commentators will blab on about "market share"... but they have no idea what I'm really watching on my computer. Ray, do you know if the TV bigwigs are trying to get a handle on all of this??? Back on Topic ---> Yes... yes I am paying attention to the Olympics! Cheers, Shane
  7. Ah, the old "sport is the opiate of the masses" argument. Might well be true... then again, how would it be any different if we changed the equation a bit to: XXXX Festival/Concert/Gig=Music=Distraction for Sheep Cheers, Shane
  8. Well, yeah, they probably should pull the set from their websites... but let's be honest here - this "under $22 list price" is a fuck-up, plain and simple. There's no way $22 is the actual price of a 6 CD set like this. They cancelled my order about a month ago, and I haven't lost any sleep over it. I knew the price they quoted was a fuck-up, and I hoped that I would get lucky enough to snag a set before they noticed their error in pricing. I didn't... and I'm totally fine with that. You're right in that they should just send everyone a cancellation notice so that no one is left hanging on to some false hope... but I don't see the need to get angry about this one. Cheers, Shane
  9. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (US) Beatles - Hey Jude (AUS) I'll take both of 'em, thankyouverymuch! And I learned something else... Sangrey has the same birthday as me (12/14)... just a few years earlier is all. I knew there was a reason I liked his posts! Cheers, Shane
  10. I grabbed this off of eMusic a couple of days ago (the VBR bitrate is pretty good, somewhere close to averaging 256, I think... definitely much better than iTunes), and have only listened to it a couple of times. First impression - I dig this album, especially the first track. I can't say I'm crazy about the arrangement of "The Coaster", but that's probably because I love the "original" arrangement so much. Each musician gets some time to spread out on the album... I don't think BJP gets enough solo space, actually. All said, I'm glad to have this! Certainly not BJP's greatest work, but it is damn fine. Think I'll give it another listen right now! Cheers, Shane
  11. In golf, no one is trying to stop you from doing what you're trying to do...just yourself. A different kind of skill/test/competition, but not a "Sport". A game, recreation, good-walk-spoiled, but not a "Sport" unless you're Happy Gilmore. What??? "Sport" is reserved for those activities where someone is "trying to stop you from doing what you're trying to do"? I've got to say, I've never heard that definition of sport before! Hell, if we go with that definition, half the events at the Olympics will need to go, as they wouldn't be classified as actual "sports"... actually, more than half (track events, field events, archery, swimming, diving, gymnastics, rowing, shooting, etc.... I think you get the picture). By any definition typically accepted in the world of kinesiology, golf is indeed a sport. Cheers, Shane
  12. Oh, it's a real sport all right... All you have to do is play it a few times and that becomes (sometimes painfully) clear! Cheers, Shane
  13. You know Conn, you're right. I'm out of this, and apologies to Jazzmusicdepot for further derailing this thread. In fact, since he was kind enough to offer the board members a deal, I'm off to check out what he's got. I'm sure I'll find something out of the 600+ CDs he listed... Cheers, Shane
  14. by all means. let's save the attacks for long-time members of the community who ask the going price for rare items. I exposed your hypocrisy , and now in a rush to regain your sense of moral superiority , you go and quickly confirm your hypocrisy with this attempt to do what you accused me of doing ( derailing a seller's thread ) . You psychologists really are just so much more self-aware than the rest of us   Chas, Just stop. You acted like a douche in that other thread, were called on it, and didn't have the decency to apologize. No need to continue this BS... just admit that you were wrong and move on. Cheers, Shane
  15. Yeah, it really is a shame that Fantasy did not choose to reissue any of McCoy's work. There's some damn fine stuff in there, and I would've thought they would have released at least ONE album over the years, but... nope! The Spiderman cover is great... I think it was released on CD in Japan briefly, but then was pulled because of copyright issues on the use of the Spiderman image. Personally, I'd love to see Mosaic do "The Complete Prestige Recordings of Freddie McCoy". I think it would be what, 7 CDs max? I'd pre-order that in a heartbeat! Lord knows Concord won't be releasing ANY Freddie in the near future. Cheers, Shane
  16. Ah, hell. Sorry to hear this news, although hopefully Jimmy has found some peace now. Thanks for all the great music Jimmy, and may your spirit continue to soar!
  17. My condolences to you and your family, Jim. Your father sounded like a hell of a good guy!
  18. Nice! Congrats to you and your family, Jim!!! Cheers, Shane
  19. WB3, Have you checked out these guys from your neck of the woods? They do some pretty nice skinhead reggae, and their live shows are pretty tough! I'm a big fan of the 60's and 70's stuff as well (ska, rocksteady, roots, skinhead reggae, etc.), but I do have to point out some absolutely KILLER new albums that have just recently been released by: The Caroloregians - Pum Pum Hotel: Stingers ATX - This Time Around: The Slackers - Self Medication: Dave Hillyard - Plays Hits of Jackpot: Some good, good stuff coming out, including the new Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra... and soon the new Chris Murray Combo will hit, along with an album of brand new stuff from a reformed See Spot (finally!). A lot of the contemporary/current ska, to put it bluntly... sucks! But there are some great bands out there playing the hell out of the music! I'll post more new stuff later! Good to see some fans of ska/rocksteady/reggae/dub on this board! Cheers, Shane
  20. When I was working on my Ph.D. at UF in Gainesville (1992-1997), I saw Sam perform many, many times. He'd usually come up from Orlando and play at the Covered Dish (man, that joint was a great place to see shows)... he'd play in all sorts of settings (quartet, trio, duet, etc.), and he'd often let some of the locals sit in. Sometimes his sets would go on for a couple of hours, and on occasion he'd get in a zone where he'd return back to his firebreather days of the "young man" he was in the sixties and seventies. The man is amazing, and although he definitely has slowed down these days, he is one of the giants of the music! Cheers, Shane
  21. Hi All, I just noticed that Mosiac put up a Lester Young slideshow on the main page of their website. The 5:30-long slideshow includes an interview with Dan Morgenstern and some nice Lester in the background. The interview is nothing special, but there are some excellent photos in the show! Cheers, Shane
  22. Has anyone picked up the Twilight Zone - Complete Definitive Edition DVD set? I'd like to get some feedback on whether this is a significant upgrade over the earlier DVDs released a few years back. Ah hell... let's face it... I'm really just looking for someone to tell me to go ahead and get it! (Feedback still appreciated, though.) Cheers, Shane
  23. Nah, This isn't a bitch-fest because people have differing views... and Lord knows, Jim, that your views are probably the most respected on this board... the bitch-fest occurs when Brian drops terms like "simps", "pricks", "dipshits", etc. on those that disagree with him and his views. Hey, that's his schtick, and he's got it down to a science... but it definitely elevates the "bitchiness" of these threads. Ah well... if he hadn't waded in this thread probably would've had a few replies and died a quiet death... now we're up to what, seven pages or so? Good times!!! Cheers, Shane
