  1. That "James Hardge" is some funny shit! I guess that'll teach him to try and get the BJ catalog off the interweb! Cheers, Shane
  2. Cool, man... all the best to you too! When's your next gig in NYC? Please let us know so I can tell some of my friends to check out your show. Cheers, Shane
  3. You're kidding, right? To me, the picture represents music as an IV to the soul... something that provides nourishment to the living organism. If you've chosen to view it in another way, that's certainly your choice... but that's just it, your choice. Joel, I have tremendous respect for you, your work as a musician, and your posts... so I have no intention of a flame war with you at all. I hope you understand where I'm coming from on this. Cheers, Shane
  4. Ah, this is tough news to hear. I loved his playing. I had the pleasure of meeting Bud and his wife a few years ago while he was playing at Spazio's in Los Angeles... they were extremely friendly! During one of the sets I was sitting at the bar with Bud's wife, and a fan came up to talk to her, saying something like "gosh, listening to Bud right now you can really tell that Art Pepper was Bud's idol"... she shot the fan an icy stare and retorted "Bud was Art's idol"! After Bud's third set, we hung out and talked about the music until the joint closed... I distinctly remember Bud's arrangement of "All The Things You Are" was a particularly complex one, and I dug it a great deal. R.I.P. Bud. May your spirit continue to soar! Shane
  5. Thanks for that info, Chuck! I was reading the liner notes yesterday and was going to post a question as to who the dismissed bassist was... now I have the answer. I love this board! Cheers, Shane
  6. I know Dan Skea is (was?) working on "The RVG Project", which in part is (was?) attempting to do just such a thing. I have no idea how far along he is in his work, but I know he's been at it for many years already. I wish he'd drop by this board and give us an update... Cheers, Shane
  7. Whaaaa??? McLean played that way for 50 years... are you saying he "accidentally" played this way for that long? And that all the legends he played with chose not to call him on it? Of course he deliberately chose to play a bit sharp... and as others have stated, it had a desired effect. Jackie is one of my all-time favorite alto players (second only to Bird, actually), and I love his tone, his pitch, and his phrasing. You can bet on the fact that what he did was most certainly deliberate. Cheers, Shane
  8. I agree with everything you just said, Ray. This is very sad news. Unless... the Bakery opens somewhere else closer to me! I love the Culver City space and vibe, but it isn't located near where I live these days... I used to live about 15 minutes away, but now it's more like an hour away (with good traffic). Ruth mentioned she wants the new space to be "on the Westside", but who knows what will come of that... the rents there are nuts right now! Cheers, Shane
  9. The CD you linked is definitely a bootleg. RLR is one of those Andorran labels that releases boots from time to time... but it would not be considered an "official" release. I'm pretty sure everything on this CD has been on Dime before... I'm sure that's where RLR got it from in the first place. Cheers, Shane
  10. Yeah, I listened to the whole thing. Every second of it. It was a few years ago, so I don't remember exactly how long it took to do it (a month maybe?). And yes, I did go crazy by the end of it... like I said, it turned me off of the Beatles for a bit! Still, I'm glad I did it! If I had the time and the inclination (and I don't!), I'd cull that 83 CD set down to maybe 15 CDs of just the highlights. Cheers, Shane
  11. Was Purple Chick the group that released that whopping 83 CD set of the "Get Back" sessions (A/B Road Complete Sessions)? I've heard that set... all of it... Christ, that put me off the Beatles for a bit! "Quality Boots", they were! Cheers, Shane
  12. Well, he was in town over the past few days... didya get to have that sammich with him? (I'm embarrassed to say I didn't catch any of his sets at the Bakery... too much $$$ for me these days... and I've heard his jokes before... "Najee"... "Con-fusion"! -- Still, I love Papa Lou!) Cheers, Shane
  13. How dare Wayne Shorter get top billing over Kenny G!?! Does not compute!
  14. 15. Wow, did I ever read this sentence wrong the first time I saw it! It's amazing what swapping two words can do...
  16. Great link, Lazaro... thanks for this! If I heard this voice without any context, I would never in a million years guess it was Miles'. He sounds... older than his age would suggest. Cheers, Shane
  17. I completely agree. I guess that's the most frustrating thing about reading the book... there are important points made, but they often get washed away by Kofsky's paranoia/insecurity/arrogance/malevolence. I've never before read a book that's made me say "Right On!" after reading one sentence, only to be followed by a "WTF?" facepalm the next. I did read those letters... clearly Kofsky had some serious issues. I guess I should be thankful that during my time in academia I've never had to deal with anyone remotely like Kofsky in my Department. Of course, I'm not in the History department... Please don't let Allen know I'm an academic... Cheers, Shane
  18. I was just re-reading Kofsky's "Black Nationalism" yesterday (got damn, was that ever a frustrating experience!), and it really struck me that his interviews with Elvin and John were beyond self-serving (the McCoy interview didn't seem quite as bad to me). Kofsky certainly had his agenda, and he ran with any little scrap of acknowledgement of his ideas that Elvin or John offered... his ability to twist Elvin and John's responses to suit his agenda are "impressive" indeed. I always had the impression that the audio transcripts of these interviews would reveal that Elvin and John were none too happy with the direction of some of Kofsky's questions - and especially his reframing of their responses. That appears to be true... I wonder what Kofsky suffered from more... a pathological insecurity that he needed to cover through his actions, or just plain malevolent arrogance. Both ooze from the pages from "Black Nationalism". Cheers, Shane
  19. Funny you should mention that... I'm watching the All-Star competitions on the "Toronto Sports Network" right now! Cheers, Shane
  20. I was just going to say the same thing. True, SF was hit harder by the quake, but man, Tim... BOTH the Giants and the A's were touched by the quake, so it was an issue for both teams. It's not like the A's weren't affected at all. And this: This is just not a reflection of reality in any way. Like I said before... not a chance in hell.
  21. Now this is a real shame! I'm a huge fan of the Prisoner and Danger Man series... I always had this dream that I would eventually run in to Patrick McGoohan somewhere in Santa Monica so I could thank him for his great work. Be seeing you, Patrick. R.I.P.
  22. Sorry Tim. Not.A.Chance.In.Hell. And I say that as someone who is definitely NOT an A's fan.
  23. Damn, Niko, thanks for this link! I just ordered "Jazz on the Quarry" and "Just Friends"... but will likely order all of them before too long. I'll report back when I receive them. JR had some serious chops, no doubt about that. It'll be nice to hear him stretch out (I hope) on these live albums. Cheers, Shane
