  1. FWIW, Japanese authorities and this guy both suggest that, bad as things are, we're not likely to experience another Chernobyl. http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-tech-nuclear-expert-869322.html I love how reassuring he is and then adds the caveat that details are "sketchy." Being on the west coast I just thought I'd try to get a gander on what reasonably could happen. With access being what it is nowadays finding "reasonable" could take awhile.
  2. I loathe these deluxe packages where the vinyl duplicates the CD (or vice versa depending on your view.) And I'd far rather have a hi-res disc option and skip the vinyl and the CD altogether. As JSngry says, "too late."

That line cracks me up every time (not that I hear the song much anymore.) I just take it as someone quickly realizing how difficult & messy it is to be a sculptor since you get bloody knuckles and broken nails. Far easier to make potions in a travelling show.
  4. At least NBA "cheating" is up front and the players are paid up front too. Though there is all of the suspicious refereeing I'll grant you that. I can't stand the phoniness of the NCAA, and the quality of play has taken a hit with all of the one-and-done players. I still hope for a day when the jocks go on strike before the tournament, though I guess it'd be stupid since the stars' income is under the table thus it's easier to not report it to the IRS.

And he thought so to (as do I.) I have an '84 recording solo recording where Elvis makes Billy Joel jokes a few times thoughout the show.
  6. Holy cow, that was a huge one. I'm so glad you guys were even able to reply. A tsunami too with more warnings. I've been offline, came here and saw your note. Time to stray from here and check the news sites etc. some more. Be safe and I hope I'm not going to discover how awful this likely is (hope that made sense.)

His prime covered the punk years and if you were into punk you loathed him. Not that punk was a requirement for loathing him...In college I remember having a set of friends where we'd always refer to him by including his middle name "Fucking." Yeah I know, a real clever crowd but he just gave off that kind of vibe to us. "Big Shot," "Allentown," "It's Still Rock & Roll To Me" were some of the more horrific radio songs of the day. Bill Murray's Nick the Lounge Singer helped ease the pain of the continued overexposure of the sappy "Just The Way You Are." Singing lounge was a great defense against all sorts of annoying songs when trapped with an out of (your) control radio. It wasn't until the early '90s that I started having friends who say, thought The Nylon Curtain was a very good album. So I have to be more careful when his name comes up as apparently some aren't familiar with his middle name.
  8. Link to app's website
  9. His most similar player in his prime years was Ernie Banks. He was getting wonky in the field though and probably would have been moved out of SS fairly soon (though maybe not as Jeter never was.) I've always felt though that even without the "clubhouse cancer" mentality of '04 that if he isn't traded the Red Sox don't win the World Series that year as Cabrera was a whiz with the glove that year.
  10. Well on the notebooks you're touching the trackpad, not the screen itself. With OS version older hardware I'm using it only recognizes between 1 & 2 fingers. 1 finger moves the cursor around, 2 makes scrolling on webpages a breeze. I really miss the latter when I have to use Windows.
  11. What does this mean? I'm curious. This video is a few years old but it'll give some idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OIwcMWA2oI
  12. A Safari that will work for your version of Tiger is in the link below. Sorry I didn't check that in the earlier post since you gave your version number. Safari for 10.4.11 The latest version of the latest OS (Snow Leopard) is 10.6.6. Not much sense in getting Snow Leopard now as Lion is coming out fairly soon. (Also Lion may not have as much to offer to older machines as some features relate to multi-finger wipes on trackpads that only more recent laptops will recognize.)
  13. The administrator password is one which you should have been called upon on other occasions for some of the system updates. I believe you're not running the latest version of OSX so it may have been awhile since you last needed to provide it. This same password might pop up when you first boot up your computer, though perhaps you don't do that for your computer. Perhaps you have a (paper) file about the computer where you wrote the password down? For deleting Firefox on a Mac you do just what you did to get rid of Safari. Just drag it to Trash (this info courtesy of the Firefox site.) There are some programs on the Mac that have uninstall programs but many are still just dragged to Trash. No Windows Registry here. For the sake of convenience I'd visit apple.com and download Safari. It's only about 60 mb so you should have plenty of room. Although it's safe to delete Safari you may occasionally run into some nagging issues that you mentioned so I'd get a copy and keep it on the computer. You can keep it off the Dock and not even have to look at it, but it'll be around in case some update to Firefox messes things up for you. Or if you were to accidentally delete Firefox. (Also if you ever accidentally deleted all of your browsers one way to get Safari back would be to grab one of your installation discs and look for a folder that I think is called "optional installs.")
  14. A great year for the mighty Crim. Here's what you missed: Waiting Man (8:10) Thela Hun Ginjeet (7:15) Red (6:15) Matte Kudasei (3:40) The Sheltering Sky (8:48) Elephant Talk (5:10) Indiscipline (10:00)* Lark's Tongues In Aspic Pt. II (8:20) *looks like a tape flip during Indiscipline. Here's the site I got the above from. etree lists 5 traders w/ a copy. 2 say A- quality while one says C. At least a recording exists.
  15. Behold! The future of All Music. Paste (which was bought by Wolfgang's Vault recently) reports All Music is merging all of their guides into one site. So this may mean a couple clicks to get where you're used to going unless some kind of deep-linking is available. As far as the guides I didn't vote. Penguin is an entertaining read in places and I doubt I've ever been steered wrong by anything 3.5+ stars with artists that I'm at least somewhat familiar with. There have been cases where something they're not overly fond of, such as Lee Morgan's Tomcat or anything by Grachan Moncur III that I end up liking much more, but that happens with any guide. But on the whole it can be useful despite its limitations (such as no Mosaics.) The All Music is something I probably check out every day, sometimes multiple times for various reasons, even though I know their credit information is far from guaranteed to be accurate. Despite the messiness of comps getting mixed in with regular issues and so forth it is a free site and there's so much music in the world I'm shocked it's as organized as it is. And it's free! Neither carries the weight that a guide book did when I was a teen or pre-internet but they contribute to the selection process along with searching this site and the internet for blogs & reviews and a host of other sites depending on the genre. Plus now it's much easier to hear the music (and legally at that), so often the ears get to make up "their mind," though I remind them that often great music isn't appreciated on the first go around, especially when multi-tasking at 9:45 AM.
  16. Understood, although for me Imperial Bedroom gets as much love as the first 5 so I'm very fond of the Rhino. I also now like Almost Blue w/ the bonus disc more than I liked the album when it came out (and I've never been allergic to country leanings either.) I've been told be a couple of out of town friends that the bonus discs shed new light on the Warner period and Goodbye Cruel World but I haven't tried those myself (though I've considered Goodbye, just haven't run into it.) I'm still on vinyl (or gasp - cassette on 2) for the post Imperial Bedroom material until CDs became commonplace. I had intended to get the King Of America & Blood & Chocolate deluxe Rhinos but was too busy going after new (and "new" old) music to do it and still feel that way. I too second the rec on El Mocombo as far as live as it can almost make the LP versions sound like demos, but I get it if live isn't of interest.
  17. Question 1 in the FAQ from Fent99's link answers that. I have a mix of all of the expanded releases and keep my eyes open for some of the Rhino's to replace a Ryko or two. Like RDK mentioned some of the Rykos despite being just one disc are jammed w/ tunes (such as Get Happy!) While I consider myself a big fan I guess I'm not a completist, so missing a demo here or there doesn't cause me to lose sleep.
  18. The only problem I have with the Missy post is that the cat is almost spot on what mine looks like (though mine has a better mustache.) It makes me wonder if I should have a pre-made lost poster just in case, and then seeing where that goes...hoo ha!
  19. Oh I know he won't really have to do the cleaning himself. But sheeesh, unless he's converting to an illegal sect of Mormonism I don't get all the square footage. Perhaps there'll be another bubble in the next 10 years and he can unload it. Hmm, I wonder if he got his design idea from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, as the "backyard" looks like where the final confrontation occurs. That'd be a great research project, seeing how many athletes base their mansions on video game architecture.
  20. Gosh, Derek & Minka are going to be spending the rest of their lives dusting.
  21. Oddly enough way out in Eugene OR there's a very short street that bears his name. It's where the old minor league ballpark used to be and is barely a block long. A long way from Flatbush.
  22. I'm both excited and also wondering about overlap. Luckily I have a niece with an interest in all eras of jazz yet she isn't an audiophile, so the demoted discs always have a place to go.
  23. Sentimental and smart! Congrats, you'll love it.
  24. I thought her performance was award worthy though I get tired of lead actress performances that get filed under the supporting category. This trick happens every few years and it's silly. Not that she would have had a chance against Portman, which is likely why the studio did it.
