  1. I agree. Now there's a whole generation growing up believing that Jane Austen fought zombies and Abe Lincoln not only freed the slaves but thwarted a vampire invasion as well. At least that's what I read in a Texas textbook. Must be true. And who can forget what happened in Mayberry when Peaches came to town. (Video contains language that may be offensive along with nonnude sexual content. So hurry up, watch it!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXiFuU7X_Fo
  2. It's on their Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle album, along with some '50s covers like "Rock Around The Clock" and "C'mon Everybody." Though some covers (and other material) are minus Johnny.
  3. Rolling Stone has 15 rock photos on their site. "Oh he did that one. And that one too..."
  4. (Laughing to keep from crying.) Yeah, boy, the 5% of me that talked myself into thinking it could work evaporated last week.
  5. And OMG! There are loads of "Leave Tiger Alone" parodies on youtube. I doubt anything approaches the original Britney crybaby, but damn! Pretty good South Park last week.
  6. Woo-eee, what a way to start the morning! Loved all of the above. Big bands are back - on youtube at least!
  7. Ordered the Hampton and the Ellington Newport. Sales work.
  8. I plan on adding this to an Amazon order with in week or 2.
  9. Wow, so Mosaic had its sale just for your birthday huh? Cool! Have one Hill of a happy birthday!
  10. I've occasionally run into partial sets at flea markets and even used CD stores. I was able to get 3 discs of the Mildred Bailey set that way. The person selling said he was helping a family sell a deceased member's CD collection and didn't realize until it was too late that the sets were typically sold together, along with not knowing there were big boxes w/ booklets as well. I suppose even in this age of eBay if one saw the black & white case art without the box & booklet, a person might get the impression it's all rather plain and therefore not very valuable.
  11. Hey what are you talking about!! The Stitt is a great set. Seriously. Indeed! I bought it in Sept. 2006 during a "this and that" sale similar to this one. It hadn't been on radar as at the time as I had other priorities, and it is a lot of Stitt and expensive at full price. However, the lone Stitt (leader) that I owned (New York Jazz) I loved, and I noticed that I had a dozen Mobleys, more Pepper, etc. and using the logic of this board it seemed like a good way to have more Stitt representation. It is one hell of set and it's easy to dive in anywhere. It gets played more than some of the other Mosaics (or music regardless of label/packaging) that I was more excited about getting. Recommended.
  12. And it's $39 (before shipping) until the end of March. Take the timing of this as a sign.
  13. I had a similar thing happen twice with him. I started with Point Of Departure as at the time I was starting with jazz and some list had it as the greatest jazz album ever. I loved Dolphy but it just wasn't clicking. Picked up another, didn't go gaga over it, but eventually the Black Fire reissue came out and ding ding ding! Picked up one or two more albums, then cooled off, for some reason returned to those albums and again, wowee it was all I wanted hear. I would say regarding the '60s Blue Notes you might as well let price or convenience be your guide for the next one, as you'll likely want all of the recently RVG or Conn reissued ones. Something different happens on all of them, be it 2 bassists (Smokestack), or Sam Rivers, Hutcherson/Davis/Elvin (Judgement)...RoosterTies can go on & gush more than I can regarding Mr. Hill, but it's hard to pick your favorite child (sometimes). As far more recent releases I'm sadly lacking in experience there, but Dusk is one to look for. Edit - Sorry, I had intended to mention the 2 Mosaic Selects as well. A bit more expensive, but if you're still feeling it after a couple more albums give it them high consideration. One is Andrew Solo (the latter higher numbered set), the other is different group projects that (mostly) weren't released.
  14. Keep working on your knuckleball, you're not to old for the bigs yet. Happy birthday!
  15. I guessed we had one, but I almost deposited my photo in the thread about the Lou Donaldson album.
  16. An unfortunate name for a hot dog.
  17. Or try a little toothpaste. It's worked for me.
  18. Gargoyles That made a huge impression on me. If anyone wants to see a 5 minute condensed version check below. If you don't want the masterpiece spoiled quit after about a minute, just enough time to see the cool evil gargoyle and hear his awesome altered voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59Kz6G8174w Silly as it is it made me appreciate seeing Notre Dame all the more (when I was 11), plus I credit it for getting me into R.E.M. at the ground floor.
  19. Have a great day!
  20. It's just smart baseball business to see how the economy goes and how another year of aging effects Jeter. A double dip recession means they likely don't have to spend as much, and if Jeter starts showing his age then you don't go beyond the 3000th hit for length of contract. But the latter event will surely keep him there, and it will be expensive. But given the championships & revenue he's helped the franchise generate it'll be well spent for past service if nothing else.
  21. Perhaps it helps to have one's sound fidelity expectations lowered, but I think it sounds dandy! I am using the player with the HDCD chip for what's it worth. Unlike WorldB3 I'm not cheating by heading straight for the gooey center but I'm playing it straight through. "Dark Star" hunters will want this, it's purdy. While I still hope for a Texas '72 compilation/big box/whatever someday, I'm glad that they had the good sense to release this Texas Road Trip that I didn't know I wanted.
  22. I have a friend who works with an independent shop and it's as simple as it's easier to keep track of items if you have things only being sold from one place. If the item was in the store and on Amazon at the same time, you're going to disappoint some people online too frequently when you have to inform them the item is no longer available. And some of those people reach the conclusion that the store is trying to sell what they don't have and don't come back. Thus when they have something that they feel the local market isn't going to snap up, online it goes, and that's the only way to buy it.
  23. I was waiting for a comment on the bonus Other One as that was the cherry on top that reeled me in. Darn the luck I thought I would have gotten it on Saturday but maybe tomorrow. This release worked great for me as it's a show I didn't have, yet I had always intended to get a few more from this interesting period where Keith was new to the band and the Pig was away. It's funny (to me at least) how I got started with the Dead with their '71 material (Skull & Roses) yet the more I got into the Dead it was the year I was most likely to ignore (at least of the pre-80s material), the exception being 8-6, the April Fillmores, and sometimes Gaelic Park. The benefit of neglecting the year for so long is now how much I enjoy the material when I hear it. The summer '71 Road Trips helped reintroduce the year to me in a big way, so I'm looking forward to this one. You hear me Ms. Postperson?

    Headphones

To take this in a slightly different direction, has anyone had problems with the wires from the base of the V to where they connect to the cans twist to ridiculous amounts. Mine are twisting to such levels I'm afraid that the wires are going to break, especially at where they branch out separately where they resemble overly twisted twist ties. I'm tempted to take them in to the shop where I bought them (18 months ago so likely past warranty - though I should look that up) now as breakage seems inevitable. I like the sound, but I'm not overly impressed by what seems like a design flaw to me. Or at least poorly designed for my habits.
  25. I own both, but I'm too lazy to give you the details as far as sessions. I can tell you that 3 of the JSP discs are 60 minutes long, give or take a minute with one disc almost being 70 minutes. Whereas the Mosaic discs range from 65 to 75 minutes. Bix is gone by disc 5, but the Tram sessions include Bing Crosby, Eddie Lang, and other "big" names. For me the key consideration is the last name in the set. The Teagarden sessions are prime stuff. I find myself returning to this often because of the draw of Bix or Teagarden, so I tend to start on either the 1st or last discs, yet the Tram-without-Bix portions shouldn't be ignored either. Bonus points for the black & white format working so well given the age of the material. I owned the JSP 1st, but I had no buyer's remorse or regrets about getting the Mosaic, and it's the one I play more often.
