How about Blu Ray players vs DVD and Cd players? It may be nuts but I think my cds sound better on my Blu Ray player.

There's a slew of $1.78 albums right now. They seem to treat each side of an Lp as one cut: Buck Clayton Jam Session, Brubeck at Oberlin, Ellington at the Hollywood Bowl, Ellington in Seattle, Gil Evans New Bottles Old Wine etc... From the reviews some of these seem to be needle drops. Not sure what's going on. Some are also available at full price with correct number of cuts.

Agreed, and perhaps best experienced on this disc. The Classics Hawkins series contains 44 tracks from the European stay and Neatwork issued 21 alternates. The Affinity Box set, Coleman Hawkins The Complete Recordings 1929-1941 is far from complete (eg there's nothing from the Fletcher Henderson band!) but it has 50 European recordings and 23 alternates.

Loren Schoenberg points out that the solo Hawkins took in the Metronone All Stars version of One O'Clock Jump became Feedin' the Bean a bit later when Hawkins recorded with the Basie band and for which Basie gets credited as composer. But I first heard it on The Hawk in Hi-Fi where it's called The Bean Stalks Again with Hawkins listed as composer.

So there is video of the Antibes performance but they're offering a DVD of a different concert!? Well at least it gives us two (or is it 3) concerts.

Maybe this is a jazz musician with an R&B background, but Bill Harris who played guitar for The Clovers put out some acoustic guitar records a la Charlie Byrd in the early '60s. And does Ray Charles count?

You should listen to the stuff he did in Europe during the five year gap. The lack of great sidemen didn't hold him back.

I got excited thinking there might be some unreleased Charlie Christian here but the supposed "1939-41 air checks" begin with the Harlem Breakfast Club sessions organized by Jerry Jerome that have been issued often before and which don't involve Goodman or Hampton.

I just got my copy from Artistshare. If you're interested in Gil's pre-'70s work you've got to have this. Several pieces from his Thornhill days (including one he composed) and a couple from "The Individualism of..." reworked for a larger band. You can order a cd or download it. I recommend the former because it's beautifully packaged and annotated-- worth the extra six bucks. The soloists are pretty good too-- there's one especially nice trombone solo. I highly recommend this for Gil Evans fanatics (obviously I'm one of them).

The Real Jazz statin sometimes surprises me by playing something like The Hot Fives, but I wish they'd identify the sidemen or even tell us what Albums the songs are from. I haves to admit I mainly listen to Little Steven's Underground Garage.

Should we regard this, with hands wringing (or is that wringing hands? -- don't want any dangling modifiers), as a Coleman Hawkins IPO matter? In other words, did orders overwhelm the machines? Maybe they've sold out already? I dunno, it sounded like a one time deal to me. He gave me some hope mine would ship today, but I'm not counting on it. It would be nice to delve into this over the long weekend. If it ships tomorrow, I won't get it until Tuesday. N.B. Dangling modifiers left out to please all anal-retentive grammarians. I think I'm one of the lucky ones. I got an e-mail yesterday saying it would be shipped within 24 hours.

I always liked "On the Radio".
