Happy B'day and many more!!

Wow. And I thought everyone had forgotten about Osborne. I wrote a dissertation about him in 1966. If people ask me about it I now usually have to explain who he was and why he was important.

is smooth jazz dead?
medjuck replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I never understood Smooth Jazz or its audience but this in interesting. The scariest thing about audiences I've noticed is how old they are for most of the music I like. My wife went to see Henry Gray (sp?) Howlin' Wolf's pianist last week and she said no one in the audience except her was under 80! I always thought that the blues had a young following but I am probably 30 years behind the times. I recently saw Jim Kweskin with Geoff Mudar and they joked that their audience was old people with their parents. Not that young people don't like good music. Last night I saw The Black Keys and the audience was pretty mixed in age. I remember about 15 years ago my daughter complained that all the rock stations she liked were changing their format to Smooth Jazz. Now they seem to be changing to Christian Talk RAdio. -
Eric Hobsbawm RIP
medjuck replied to umum_cypher's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The Hobsbawm 'diary' link is a great read. So Marlowe Morris is definitely on the Jazz side of Blues? Wild Bill Davis like perhaps. And here's the sound itself - to use an old Australian colloquialism - 'shit hot!" I totally get where Hobsbawm was coming from hearing this. Yes, I used to have the LP that came from, but sold it when I was poor in '71. Nice to hear it again. Thanks. MG The Lp is included in the Mosaic Columbia Small Groups Session. I never particularly liked it. Maybe I should give it another listen. -
Have fun!

blue note launches spotify app
medjuck replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Wasn't this the same sentiment when the CD replaced the LP and Cassette? I won't argue that digital music can be a rather cold experience but it's what we're dealing with nowadays and as someone in the digital space, I am doing what I can to help make the experience a more welcoming one. I would like to hear you provide more detail on your "squeeze a few bucks from their holdings without regard for the composers and performers" statement. Unless you have the documentation to substantiate this, I'm not sure how you can make such a sweeping statement. I'm sorry but it just sounds like sour grapes to me. Granted, I'm not advocating for the major label system here. We all know it's fraught with issues. I can tell you as someone from the inside, there are passionate people within those walls that care about the composers and performers. In it's own little way, the BN App is a attempt to place all of that disparte content into a centralized experience with the goal of increasing the amount of streams per track / album and in turn generate more revenue for the label and the respective rights holders. Not the same at all. Please check out the licensing rates for cds, lps, downloads, and finally streaming. Dollars are reduced to fractions of pennies. I am talking about both publishing and artist royalties. Yes, but when you buy a song either on a cd or via download the artists, composers etc are only paid once no matter how often you play the music. With streaming they're paid every time you listen to it. (Admittedly the rates may be such that you'd have to play something hundreds of times to make up the difference.) -
Ever see Piano Players Hardly Ever Play Together? He's a great fucking pianist.

Obscure Albums You'd Give Your Eye Teeth to Hear

Bill Harris? Hey, I used to have that on Lp! IIRC sounded a bit like Charlie Byrd. -
IIRC nearly everyone of the metal spine bo sets arrived later than first announced. I think (hope) that they're just trying to get it right. (Apple does do one ting right: they don't announce a product till it's ready to ship. )

I used to have an Lp called something like "Stick It"- actually came with adhesive stamps IIRC. It seems never to have been released on cd and I really liked it. Maybe his comeback will cause it to be re-released.

Milestones (Jack Chambers)
medjuck replied to fasstrack's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I used to correspond with Jack Chambers. He told me he would have liked to have updated the book and correct some factual mistakes but gor budgetary reasons no publisher was willing to do any more than allow him the new introduction. -
Rock/pop albums that are surprisingly unavailable

Speaking of Van, I think that "The Story of Them" is not available in the US. -
Looking for Charlie Christian suggestions

CC is someone for whom you can be a compulsive completist without going broke. BTW The "Definitive" box set of live performances has pretty good sound. Almost anything missing from it is on t Masters of Jazz Vol. 9. The Uptown doesn't contain anything you can't find elsewhere but has the best sound for the Jerry Jerome set. -
I posted the following on the Duke LYM list serve: I only met Sjef once but often corresponded with him-- usually with queries which he generously answered. He was informative, friendly and always a gentleman. He will be missed. A fuller description of Sjef's importance to Ellington aficionados was posted by Loek Hopstaken: Such sad news. Sjef was the most dedicated Duke Ellington fan. Actually "fan" is not the right word. He just madly loved the music, went to see all Ellington concerts in The Netherlands after WWII, and hooked up with other dedicated Ellington lovers like Benny Aasland. In fact, there was no Ellington expert in the world who didn't know Sjef and knew he/she could count on his full support. He was a walking & talking Ellington encyclopedia, generously sharing his knowledge. Most Ellington book authors would eventually find their way to Sjef to get answers - the facts. The DEMS Bulletin is the longest running magazine celebrating the music, and invaluable for anyone interested in the facts. The Duke Ellington room in his house was a small museum, with all the records, cd's, DEMS cassettes, videos, dvd's. Through the years, we met at several occasions. Once he hosted a full day of Duke Ellington music and videos for Louis Tavecchio, Ad Oud & me. Unforgettable. He enjoyed our never-ending requests for more music. His collection - most probably the most complete in the world - contains treasures that are nowhere else to be found. We met again during the many 1999 Duke Centennial celebrations in Amsterdam, at Walter van de Leur's promotion and once again in 2004 in Stockholm. I remember him recording every word and sound of that great conference, and watching him sitting next to Alice Babs, asking her to share her memories. He made friends with anyone who shared his love for the music. He leaves a legacy that has significantly helped to map the world of Duke Ellington as we know it. He will be so missed.

Let's not forget "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" which IIRC is not heard in the film.

Anyone know these Ellington aircheck albums?
medjuck replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Everything I've heard from The Hurricane (including this cd) has been great. -
Are there enough Teddy Wilson band dates (minus those with Lady Day since they're readily available) to justify a Mosaic set? I remember that Columbia Canada once did a 2Lp set, though it included a few of the Billie Holiday cuts. I was just listening to his sextet (IIRC) on an old AFRC Jubilee broadcast and they were great.
