IIRC his first appearance on record is as a piano player with Zoot Sims/Al Cohen. Just remembered that as well as seeing him at Ronnie Scott's in 1964 I saw him open for Van Morrison. (Been dipping into Jann Wenner's rather self-contgratulatory autobiography and I think the only thing that impressed me was that he and his prep school friends skipped their graduation to see Mose at the Troubadour in 1963.)

They seem to have left out sessions from The Okeh Ellington that were made under names other than The Washingtonians or Duke Ellington. (Though one listed as by the The Harlem Footwarmers is included and another one not so there goes that theory.)

I can't find the original announcement online but I've read references to Sony releasing every take of every Ellington recording they control (including the RCAs) to streaming services with a new volume each month. The first one ("Ellington in Order, vol.1") is already up. Anyone here have more or better information?

Just learned from friends that David Meeker, author of Jazz on Film has died. As one friend noted his death may not get much attention with Bill Lee and Tina Turner dying near the same time. (He once gave me a signed copy of Max Kaminsky's autobiography.)

First heard her in Toronto before she'd made a record. In fact the only time I met her was the night a copy of her first Lp was delivered to her at The Riverboat.

I'm one of those many people who thought she'd gone too far when this was new. Now it seems really good.

The Mosaic Select discography notes state that it is from the reunion session though it was first issued on the earlier box set. Seems like the mistake was made in adding it to the earlier box.

"Pirates" was my favorite.

I once suggested that they make it available as downloads but (IIRC) Scott responded that they didn't own those rights.
