Thanks for the info, Ray. I got a 30" LCD set a while ago. Love it. the other night watched Finding Nemo just cause it looked so good. I suspect the source was a digital and had never gone through film. it looked better than it did in theaters (though I never saw it projected digitally).

I like my hdtv so much that I'm thinking of getting another. I notice that rear projection tvs (I don't think I've seen any that are just monitors) are much cheaper than flat screen tvs and aren't actualy that thick nowadays. Is the visual quality as good?

Hey it's November: Where's the Mosaic Ellington Set?
medjuck replied to medjuck's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
They apparently ran out pf the first pressing. I wonder how many they pressed. -
Back in the day, did musicians sell their records at gigs?
medjuck replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I went to many clubs and concerts in the '60s and '70s and don't ever remember records being sold. Sometimes the artists would plug their records and if they were lucky their labels made sure they were available at local stores. First time I ever saw records being sold at a gig were at some local folk concerts. -
Hey it's November: Where's the Mosaic Ellington Set?
medjuck replied to medjuck's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mine arrived today! Going to get my kids to wrap it so they can give it to me for Chanukah tomorrow night. -
No. You simply burn cds and do whatever you want with them, including transfer them to other computers. Also once they're on an iPod there's soft ware available to put them on another computer. In fact I haven't noticed any limitations-- though supposedly you can only burn a limited number of cds from the original download. However I believe that once you burn a cd and rip it to a computer you can do whatever you like.

Hey it's November: Where's the Mosaic Ellington Set?
medjuck replied to medjuck's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I just got an e-mail saying it would be shipped within 24 hours! Can't wait. -
Me too. Actually Coltrane in general. Most years it would have been Miles but this cd plus the Fearless Leader set got me to replaying things like Africa Brass. Probably the single most played cd in my house was the soundtrack to "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man". If you ordered it from iTunes you got an bonus track by Laurie Anderson that's not in the film (or as a bonus on the DVD).

Because of all the positive discussion here I got this in cd. I liked it but didn't think it compared to the Monk/Coltrane concert until I got to In Walked Bud on which Johnny Griffin takes an amazing solo. However I just realized that that cut isn't on the Lp: it's a bonus track on the cd from a sesson Monk and Keepnews originally thought wasn't suitable for release!

Duke Ellington's version of "Nutcracker"
medjuck replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This website http://www.depanorama.net/ which is very good for all things Ellington says: The Nutcracker May and June 1960 Grieg: Pier Gynt Suites Nos 1 & 2: end of June 1960 Suite Thursday: October 1960. The webssite gives specific dates. I cold check it against some Discographies I have but Peter McHare who does the website uses the same ones, so I'm unlikely to find any discrepancies. -
Happy Birthday, Ghost of Miles
medjuck replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sounds like you had a good birthday. Here's to many more! (And man I love "Some Other Time",I guess because of Bill Evans. It always drives me nuts that they don't sing it in the film version of On the Town-- though as I remember the score does hint at it.) -
Don't know about the cds but those DVDs are great. I heard about them when Peter Goralnick (sp?) was here plugging the Scorscese tv series about the Blues but implied that these were better.

The Mainman release contains eight titles recorded in Kansas City, August 1951. The Alamac has a ninth - a second version of "Leo the Lion". It is known that they also played in St. Louis. The additional title may be from the St. Louis concert. Btw, the Mainman also contains three fine tracks by Clifford Brown & Max Roach. I've got a cd of it from "Drive Archive". Nine cuts and according to the liner notes the 2nd version of Leo the Lion is from the same night. Bird supposedly wasn't happy with his playing the first time and asked to try it again later. '

do you prefer your models skinny or well fed?

Well to paraphrase Lady Day, do you want comfort or speed? -
Duke Ellington's version of "Nutcracker"
medjuck replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think David Berger has done the charts and makes them available. I can find out of you like. -
So they anounce that the latest Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour is about "moon" and the first thing he plays is Bird doing Ornithology. Then after exclaiming something like "Wasn't that great" he adds "and now here's a song based on the chord changes of Ornithology", and plays Les Paul and Mary Ford's "How High the Moon"! Either Dylan or the guy who writes for him is pretty hip.

"The Arrival of Victor Feldman" on Night Lights
medjuck replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
My father-in-law likes to tell how he used to go see Victor Feldman in London when he was still a child prodigy playing drums -
Oh, so if someone posts significantly more in the political forum than anywhere else and likes to argue with people they don't agree with, their presence here should be questioned? Johnny E Dr. Funkenstein Member Group: Members Joined: 10-March 03 Active Stats User's local time Dec 8 2006, 08:20 PM Total Cumulative Posts 5543 ( 4 posts per day / 0.99% of total forum posts ) Most active in Politics ( 6692 posts / 88% of this member's active posts ) But it's obvious Johnny cares about music. Why has Dolan joined this forum? If you just like to argue with people you don't agree with there are plenty of forums. Why join one about jazz?

It was better before you arrived. 96% of your posts are in the political forum and the rest seem to be in ones like this where you get in an arguement with someone. Have you ever posted in a music thread? Do you even like jazz?

Have You Ever Won Anything From A Radio Station?
medjuck replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
About 40 years ago I won about 3 times in one summer. I still remember the questions: I identified John Coltrane and Jethro Tull when recods were played and I knew who wrote Willie and the Hand-Jive. I won tickets to an all day rock festival, a John-Lee Hooker concert and a copy of Abby Road. All on Chum-FM in Toronto. -
Probably the line thatt suggests that what a drum and a woman have in common is that you beat them.

I didn't vote because I don't want to say anyone has crappy taste. Taste is a personal thing. But I do believe that none of these is as essential as the new Ellington that's being shipped (they claim) on December 13th so we can all get it for Xmas.

See this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...144&hl=DVDs I'd add that The Greatest Jazz Films Ever is now available through True Blue.
