I'm a fan of the record "RAH" but I think that I've read that recent releases no longer include his version of "I'll be Seeing You" because the publishers complained about his changes to the lyrics (which were pretty funny). A friend of mine sent me a cdr of about 20 versions of Spring Can Really Hang you Up the Most. I sent him back Murphy's version saying I liked it best maybe because it was the first one I'd heard. He replied that he'd never heard it before but agreed with me. BTW Who first recorded "Spring"? Saw Murphy live a couple of times in the late sixties. Sort of took him for granted. Only later realized that not many jazz singers were that good.

This is a great record. After I heard Please Mr. Webster on the Time-Life Webster box set went on a search for it. Finally had somone I knew at Warners records make me a CDR from the master tapes. One of my most prized possessions.

I think it's by St.Germaine and claims to sample a Miles and John Lee Hooker cut from the soundtrack of the film The Hot Spot. However there's no Miles to be heard, just John Lee. I can't remember the song title but when i get back to my office in a couple of days I think I can look it up.

Jamal is a good example of how fashions change: in the early 60's no-one who wanted to be hip admitted to liking him. People thought Miles was joking about him. it was almost the equivilent of saying you like Kenny G. today.

My late father once told me that the harbour in Sidney Nova Scotia used to freeze over in the winter but it hasn't in years. People used to drive across it to save time. He also said that you knew it was spring in Cape Breton the first time a car went through the ice.

I just got a copy of the new English translation of Vian's "Manual of Saint-Germain-Des-Pres. Didn't think it was very good but it's a beautiful edition-- I presume a copy of the original . BTW Do you know when the original was published? This edition never makes that clear. Bought it for the pictues of my old stomping grounds.

I ran into the late Zal Yanofsky on Yonge Street in Toronto sometimes in the 70's and he dragged me off to see this guy he said was a great guitar player who was doing a demo in a music store. Lenny Brau of course!

I used to see him a lot in Montreal in the early 60's. I think he must havea been living there then. I was present when they did a live recording that I used to own on vinyl but have never been able to find on cd: "Live at La Tete de l'Art". (sp?) I remember one night when Mingus sat in on piano.

The Duke Ellington Story on Records (DESOR) reports 7 other instances of Duke performing Carolina Shout between '65 and '73, all but one unissued. It looks like it was a regular part of his repertoire at that time. Of course he might also have performed it earlier but by the mid 60's nearly every EKE performance was recorded by soneone so we have a better record from that time on.
