  1. Hey I did a compilation of all the choices in October. It seems to have disappeared. Is it in another thread?
  2. I have it. Don't like everything on it but there are several things on it that would make it worth getting by themselves: eg. The Fats Waller/ Bill Robinson number. And if you're a completist of Mulligan or Ellington there are some things here you can't get anywhere else. (I guess an Ellingoton completist would need to a warehouse.)
  3. AJ used to work at Dutton's Books in North Hollywood. I was buying a book of jazz photography there once and she said to me "Hey there's a picture of my dad in there." When I asked who, and she said "Joe Albany", I of course replied, "You mean 'The Legendary Joe Albany'." That epithet got used so often I thought it was part of his name.
  4. The correct take from Such Sweet Thunder is available on cd: it's on a cd release about Ralph Ellison. Sorry I can't remember the name of it right now but it's a good compilation.
  5. And again today too. Between Enja and Dianne Krall. (sp?)
  6. The intro and arguement (as on the original lp) is on disc 3 of the Monk/Prestige box. Oh the pleasures of an aging brain ..... of course it's there - they had left it off the Miles Davis box set ... whatever that means. Are you guys just talking about the false start and Miles' scolding of the others on the first take of "The Man I Love," which also appears on "Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants" CDs? Or is there additional "argument" from that session on Disc 3 of the Monk Prestige box? And what were the original 3 Lps? I only remember 2. Unless you're referring to the 10 inch releases which I don't know much about. (I think Jack Chambers writes about The Man I Love as one side of a 10 inch.) BTW The argument was with Monk. He was pissed because Miles told him not to comp behind him.
  7. Has there ever been a cd release of the complete December 24, 1954 Miles date with Monk? One that includes the fasle starts and arguements?
  8. I saw them abouat a month ago when a friend phoned and asked me if I wanted to go because the venue they were at had sold so few tickets they were giving them away to regulars! I knew nothing about them, and at first I wasn't impressed, but after a couple of numbers they won me over. The small audience seemed to really dig it, but I think most of them were there because they were already fans.
  9. Uhhh...What's DWI stand for? I thought it was DUI. And since no one else mentioned it I must be the only one who doesn't know.
  10. I notice that Amazon's now offering it for $119 plus free shipping but they claim it'snot available yet.
  11. I got this new for $126 plus shipping by clicking on "new or used from.." at Amazon. It's a great book but I wish it wasn't quite so big. It's unwieldy, hard to read in bed and a danger to your bookhelves if they aren't really sturdy.
  12. I 've just tried to edit a topic header and it didn't seem to take.
  13. My 5.1 receiver has a control button for switching the "effect" off and on. What it does is switch off the sound to the center and rear speakers. If the effect is set to off and the source is in 5.1. all signals will be distributed to the main speakers (and the subwoofer). If you play a cd, the effect is automaticly off though if you turn it on the sound will come through all 5 speakers in what seems to be an artificial surround effect. I've recently gotten a couple of DVDs that seem to be in stereo. One is "AudioSlave in Cuba" which has no indication of the correct sound system on the box, label or DVD menu-- despite giving a huge credit to a couple fo guys for the sound mix. The other is the new and by me highly recommended "Duke Ellington" which contains 2 tv programs produced by Ralph Gleason in 1965: "Love You madly" and the gorgeous "A Concert of Sacred Music at Grace Catherdral". The Ellington disc has an audio setting in the menue that allows you to listen to it in mono or digital stereo. On the box it says "mono" or "Dolby Digital Stereo" but then adds to the latter ""(extrapolated)"--and what the hell does that mean? Anyway the Audio Slave is in stereo and the Ellington seems to me to be in mono no matter which setting I pick from the menu. My question is: given a mono or stereo mix on a DVD should I set my receiver to effect on or off. I've tried both and am not happy with either. I don't have this problem with cds. They sound best with effect off though sometimes I leave it on just to fill the room with sound.
  14. As a huge fan of Evans I was also disappointed in the cd. At first it just seemed ponderous to me. I thought I was listening to Stan Kenton. I much prefer later versions of all these songs ( some of them by even larger Evans groups). Is "Littlle Miss Lovely" still part of track 2? They have re-edited (or removed edits) since the original Lp release and I no longer have that to make comparisons. The booklet with the first cd release had interesting comments from the band members that aren't included in the Bluebird edition. I do prefer the alternate take of Up from the Skies-- probably because of Hannibal Peterson's solo. I notice it is the later take (if I'm reading the matrix numbers correctly, which is far from a sure thing.) I wonder why they chose the earlier take.
  15. I like some Bil Frisell a lot and don't like some at all. But it's obvious he likes whatever he's doing. He doesn't care if it's jazz or if we like it. That's not selling out. It's just a guy with eclectic tastes having a good time.
  16. When I was teaching at the University of Toronto I had students who claimed they'd gone to high School with the guy who became Leon Redbone. That was thirty years ago. He already looked old but if my students were right he was barely out of his teens then.
  17. Joe, Randy and I were going to go see this when it came through Michigan (I believe this Thursday) but we got offered a gig and I can't turn down gigs right now. Money is tight. Enjoy! ← Well it was definitly Bulgarian but I'm not sure about the bebop. It seemed to me the jazz it most resembled would be described as modal. I think they didn't want to call it by its best known name: Wedding Music. But I'd sure like to go to a wedding these guys played at. People were literally dancing in the aisles! (They were encouraged to do so by the vocalist.) And though most of the dancing resembled a hora at a Jewish wedding, there was one woman doing a belly dance and the saxophone player began to play directly to her. An amazing drummer who kept it swinging even in 7/16 time.
  18. Do you know when the quintet's records were released? I've been trying to put together a timeline about Miles influence based on the release date of his Lps but I've only been able to do an approximation of the release dates of the Prestiges.
  19. I'm going to see something called Bulgarian Bebop tonight. I have no idea what it's about. it's part of a subscription series.
  20. Buster Smith? Did he do anything as a leader before his Atlanatic Lp?
  21. And also up again because I think the first Ellington Sacred concert which I mentioned in the first post on this thread is being released on Tuesday!
  22. Maybe, maybe not. By Michael Santo Contributing Writer, RealTechNews Let’s face it, Mac users consider themselves pretty safe from spyware or malware … not completely safe, but very safe. Evidently, Sony BMG’s DRM, which some antivirus vendors are calling spyware, is a little too much for even the Mac OS. A poster at Macintouch comments on the discovery of apparent Sony BMG copy protection software running continuously in his Macintosh as a kernel extension. The software was apparently installed via a new Imogen Heap CD called “Speak for Yourself”. This is an RCA Victor release, but with distribution credited to Sony BMG, so the reader did some checking, and found the software. Unlike the issue with Windows Sony DRM, the EULA for this software states it will be installing copy protection software, and the files are not hidden. Darren Dittrich followed up on the discovery that Sony was playing a dirty trick on its customers, secretly installing a malware-style “root kit” on their computers via audio CDs: I recently purchased Imogen Heap’s new CD (Speak for Yourself), an RCA Victor release, but with distribution credited to Sony/BMG. Reading recent reports of a Sony rootkit, I decided to poke around. In addition to the standard volume for AIFF files, there’s a smaller extra partition for “enhanced” content. I was surprised to find a “Start.app” Mac application in addition to the expected Windows-related files. Running this app brings up a long legal agreement, clicking Continue prompts you for your username/password (uh-oh!), and then promptly exits. Digging around a bit, I find that Start.app actually installs 2 files: PhoenixNub1.kext and PhoenixNub12.kext. Personally, I’m not a big fan of anyone installing kernel extensions on my Mac. In Sony’s defense, upon closer reading of the EULA, they essentially tell you that they will be installing software. Also, this is apparently not the same technology used in the recent Windows rootkits (made by XCP), but rather a DRM codebase developed by SunnComm, who promotes their Mac-aware DRM technology on their site. Source: Macintouch, but you have to search for it because of the way the site works. Search for “malware-style”. We Say: It appears, despite the fact that Sony BMG believes that no one knows what a rootkit is, enough smart people around the Internet do know and continue to add more fuel to the fire. # Permalink Posted at 10:11 am On Nov 12, 2005, at 9:28 AM, Hoefsmit wrote:

    Paul Bley

I've been told that "Imagine the Sound" which has performances and stories from Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor and Bley is about to come out on DVD.
  25. I buy most of my used cds at Amoeba (sp?) in Hollywood. I don't think I've ever paid more than $8.99 and have picked up a few things for $4.99. I think they sometimes charge more if they know a cd is out of print. I think their standard price is $7.99.
