  1. Just saw this film on Amazon Prime. Maybe because I watched it in 2 sittings I thought it got more focused and more interesting in the second half. The long section on the preparations for Monk's Town Hall concert is terrific as is the story of drummer Ron Free.
  2. This is still available from Amazon. (Takes some digging.)
  3. Even the selections in the Savory Collection?
  4. Given the declining sales for cds, maybe the major companies are beginning to license their product to others rather than producing them theirselves.
  5. I know someone in their early 70s who has donated $1million dollars to a local hospital. He asked about an appointment and they put him on the list for when his turn would normally come up. He was impressed with their fairness. I'm scheduled before him because I'm over 75 and I don't think I've ever donated to them. (It's a good hospital, but I think they pay their administrators way too much.)
  6. What's "the studio version"?
  7. One of the first tweets I read said that he "was excited to talk to Megyn Kelly"so I presume he's an asshole.
  8. Is it political to say that I just read that Doug Emhoff's kids are named Cole and Ella after John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald?
  9. He was the source of the alternate takes from the Smith-Jones sessions. Wonder what other gems he had.
  10. I know this is heresy but I've listened to it a lot and I wish it were in stereo.
  11. The Mosaic Savory set.
  12. I was able to make an appointment for a shot at Ralphs (a grocery store with a pharmacy) two weeks from now. But I'm well over 65.
  13. No, I just put in "Mingus, Secret Love". That usually works for finding music tracks. (Though maybe "Secret Love" was in quotes and maybe a colon or dash after Mingus.)
  14. In the 2nd episode of the Scorcese/Lebowitz series Pretend it's a City she tells a couple of great stories about Mingus one of which involves Ellington. BTW There's a clip of Mingus playing "Secret Love". Did he ever record that song? (When I searched Discogs for "Mingus-- Secret Love" I got the movie it's from. When I tried the same thing in Amazon I got a bunch of sex toys.)
  15. Piece about him (with lots of tuba) on NPR yesterday.
  16. i think Woody was making fun of himself too. BTW Dalton Trumbo tried to have Johnny Got His Gun suppressed once the US entered the war.
  17. I bought it and also no flexi disc. Let me know what you hear. Meanwhile anyone got this in digital form?
  18. I once met a post production guy who had spent half his life looking for the original Ambersons footage but eventually thought he had proof that it had all been destroyed. (Sorry I can't remember more of the details.). But what are the alternate versions? The only version I see on Amazon is the Criterion. I was still slightly involved with Criterion when we did the Lazer Disc version and I don't think we could find any other versions. Would the preview version be Welles' early cut? Do you remember it well? OOps I just figured out you're talking about A Touch of Evil. re; Robert Wises's participation in the re-editing of the film: I once saw Bernard Herrmann give a talk at the at the British Film Institute. When there were audience questions at the end someone asked him how he could have participated in the recut of Amerbersons. He responded "We thought it was just a film; we thought we were going to make lots of them." Given the history of both Welles and Herrmann (who didn't get to work on nearly enough films) it seemed both a poignant and ironic answer to me.
  19. http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/BirdSessions.aspx?s=481122 Losin doesn't list any previous release of this material but the review makes it sound like the reason for that might have been Bird's playing. I'd still like it and will buy the book but I don't have a turntable. Is there a way to get a digital version?
  20. Thanks. Maybe someday something from the 1962 sextet with JJ Johnson will show up.
  21. I grabbed it. Yes. Even Peter Losin didn't know about it. (i.e. He knew about the existence of the band but not that it had ever been recorded. BTW this is probably one side of the record. Who knows, what if anything is on the other. ) http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Query.aspx BTW I've bid on it even though I don't have a turntable. Probably won't get it.

    Gil Evans & Ten

IIRC there a Quadrophonic release. the Gil Evans Atlantic release "Svengali". Anyone have it? (I think the only SACD release I own is Kind of Blue-- one of about 5 versions I have of it.)
  23. I captured the audio. Does anyone know the date? It's not even in Losin. Maybe we should all chip in and try to buy it.
