COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
medjuck replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was able to make an appointment for a shot at Ralphs (a grocery store with a pharmacy) two weeks from now. But I'm well over 65. -
No, I just put in "Mingus, Secret Love". That usually works for finding music tracks. (Though maybe "Secret Love" was in quotes and maybe a colon or dash after Mingus.)
-
In the 2nd episode of the Scorcese/Lebowitz series Pretend it's a City she tells a couple of great stories about Mingus one of which involves Ellington. BTW There's a clip of Mingus playing "Secret Love". Did he ever record that song? (When I searched Discogs for "Mingus-- Secret Love" I got the movie it's from. When I tried the same thing in Amazon I got a bunch of sex toys.)
-
Piece about him (with lots of tuba) on NPR yesterday.

i think Woody was making fun of himself too. BTW Dalton Trumbo tried to have Johnny Got His Gun suppressed once the US entered the war.

I once met a post production guy who had spent half his life looking for the original Ambersons footage but eventually thought he had proof that it had all been destroyed. (Sorry I can't remember more of the details.). But what are the alternate versions? The only version I see on Amazon is the Criterion. I was still slightly involved with Criterion when we did the Lazer Disc version and I don't think we could find any other versions. Would the preview version be Welles' early cut? Do you remember it well? OOps I just figured out you're talking about A Touch of Evil. re; Robert Wises's participation in the re-editing of the film: I once saw Bernard Herrmann give a talk at the at the British Film Institute. When there were audience questions at the end someone asked him how he could have participated in the recut of Amerbersons. He responded "We thought it was just a film; we thought we were going to make lots of them." Given the history of both Welles and Herrmann (who didn't get to work on nearly enough films) it seemed both a poignant and ironic answer to me.

http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/BirdSessions.aspx?s=481122 Losin doesn't list any previous release of this material but the review makes it sound like the reason for that might have been Bird's playing. I'd still like it and will buy the book but I don't have a turntable. Is there a way to get a digital version?
-
Thanks. Maybe someday something from the 1962 sextet with JJ Johnson will show up.
-
I grabbed it. Yes. Even Peter Losin didn't know about it. (i.e. He knew about the existence of the band but not that it had ever been recorded. BTW this is probably one side of the record. Who knows, what if anything is on the other. ) http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Query.aspx BTW I've bid on it even though I don't have a turntable. Probably won't get it.

IIRC there a Quadrophonic release. the Gil Evans Atlantic release "Svengali". Anyone have it? (I think the only SACD release I own is Kind of Blue-- one of about 5 versions I have of it.)
-
I captured the audio. Does anyone know the date? It's not even in Losin. Maybe we should all chip in and try to buy it.

Most self-indulgent present to self?
medjuck replied to ejp626's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think the massive RCA Ellington set was the most expensive music I've bought but that was a necessity so maybe not really an indulgence. -
COVID 19 Poll For the New Year

Dos she know if she's in line for an early vaccination? (I hope so.) -

Black and White label. -
Funny these threads got put together because Dean Jones was one of the veterans I worked with (0n "Beethoven"). He apparently had been fairly wild in his youth but was now a born again Christian. I remember him thanking me for making a film that had no swearing in it-- something I hadn't noticed. He also told me that every one of the kids who'd been in the Disney movies with him had eventually had a bad time, often as drug addicts.

I just started reading it but love that his father was a Quebecois whose name was originally DuBois. Amazon offers 3 books by Chan. There's also https://smile.amazon.com/Conversations-Jazz-Journal-Number/dp/0938331256/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2QAK2E6MP16WY&dchild=1&keywords=chan+parker&qid=1609306404&sprefix=Chan+Parker%2Caps%2C230&sr=8-6 and https://smile.amazon.com/Bird-love-Chan-Parker/dp/2903577005/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2QAK2E6MP16WY&dchild=1&keywords=chan+parker&qid=1609306429&sprefix=Chan+Parker%2Caps%2C230&sr=8-5 I have the former, which I bought for $4.95 when it first came out. Has anyone ever seen "To Bird With Love"?

Headline is a bit misleading. He doesn't just "claim" it happened-- he's got a video showing it happening.

One of the greats.

Years ago I remember thinking: if everything is available all the time do I need to own it? Well, not "everything" is available, but close to it. (Members of this board would probably find many things they want to hear or see are not on streaming platforms.) BTW Does that report mention radio? Has on-demand streaming cut into radio's audience?

Great. I've just listened to a dozen Breuker cds I bought from Michael. Not sure it's jazz but I enjoyed all but a couple of them.
