The Wide Point by Albert Mangelsdorff- (MPS)
-
really excellent , get it while you can
-
Picked these nice discs by Clara Smith - all on the Columbia flag label, which dates the discs to 1924/5 if I recall correctly. Ms Smith is smoother than Bessie but perhaps a touch more musical , very nice. You don’t know my mind / I’m gonna tear your playhouse down Don’t never tell nobody/ Waitin’ for the evenin’ mail West Indies blues/ The Clearing House Blues Don’t advertise your man /Good looking papa blues

Mary Lou Williams - ( Asch) 351- three 78 album with Bill Coleman and DSM cover too. Nice.

something different this evening...thank goodness for Esquire, otherwise my collection of bop 78s would be pretty meagre. They sound great and come from all sorts of parent labels including Prestige, Metronome ( Sweden), Dial etc. I think the first were issued 1948/9. Early British bop was recorded by the label too by the likes of Ken Moule, Ronnie Scott etc. Tonight found these by chance mixed in with some Tatum Brunswicks Lee Konitz 78s Ezz thetic / Hi beck (Esquire) Prestige You go to my head/ Palo alto (Esquire ) ex NewJazz

Not got that one but the Al Cohn Xanadu LPs I've heard are uniformly excellent. Currently spinning John Gordon - Step by Step (Strata East)- modal hard bop session, interesting line up including Roland Alexander and Charles Tolliver

I made the "mistake" of comparing the sound of the JSP set against the Parlophone 78s ( mostly from late 30s) I bought last week. I say mistake as the 78s albeit that they were UK ressues simply blew the CDs away. When not doing an A/B comparison the CDs sound just fine but the 78s have so much more power and much better sense of space around instruments. So I picked up more Armstrong 78s today , all in near mint condition. Any they too sound superb. All are pressings rather than dubs. These will do for now. The following UK Parlophones, Melancholy Blues /Wild Man Blues Weary Blues/ Willie the weeper Hotter than that / That’s when I’ll come back to you Between the devil and../. Kickin the gong around (ex Okeh) Lazy River/ Georgia on my mind (ex Okeh) Lonesome Road/ Struttin with some BBQ ( rec 1931/1927) and Swing that music / Wolverine Blues (Decca ) US original and Gut bucket blues/ Yes I’m in the barrel (Columbia) UK forties pressing

nice album, but fidelity challenged....

Louis Armstrong tonight and some early Hot 5/7 material. Bought these today, they had some many to chose from all in near mint condition. These are all UK issues from 30/40s but are pressings rather than dubs and so sound excellent. Two to three feet or so of shelf space for the shop's Armstrong 78s alone, guess I'll be back for more. I passed on some original Okehs as the condition was too poor for the price being asked ( for me at least) . Cornet Chop Suey /Muskat Ramble Columbia UK D.B.2624 Alligator Blues/ Potato Head Blues Parlophone UK R 2185 Two Deuces / Fireworks Parlophone UK R 2282

Various - 1. Jazztage der DDR Weimar 1985 ( Amiga)- mixed material some free pieces followed on one side by Joe Z's Birdland and an Ellington number on the other. The freer tracks are pretty good.

Surprise new Brown/Roach Mosaic available now
Clunky replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
UK Nixa's sound great. I'd not bother ( with the Mosaic) if I had those in reasonable condition -
I've got this issue and it sounds just fine. Wasn't expensive at all , £5 I think from Jazz House Records.

that's interesting to hear as I've this on my want (rather than need) list -
Flipping between formats this evening, first 78 randomly pulled off the shelf Eddie Condon The Eel/ Home Cooking ( Parlophone), swings like mad.
-
Taft Jordan and The Mob - Devil in the Moon/ Louisiana Fairy Tale (Perfect)- label looks similar to above. Good sides with fine playing. My copy has had a lot of love in the past so it's pretty crackly but the music is pretty strong so that doesn't matter. Not sure who was in the Mob.

More great Miles. this one is so different to the others from this period. These two by Albert Manglesdorff this evening. The solo album is really stunning.
-
nice one, I even bought my copy in Paris, some place near the university, Crocojazz, I think. I say "even bought" because most things were pretty expensive by Scottish standards.
-
Baroque Jazz Quintet- Contemporation and jazz (Panton) - Czech ECM like session , 4 tracks all very different and not much to link them. The late Ted Curson features on one track. Most of the info on the sleeve is in Czech and is hard for my muddled brain to understand but the music is actually despite the pretensions quite good

Today's purchases Wilbur Sweatman's Original Jass Band- Regretful Blues/Ev'rybody's crazy'bout the doggone blues but I'm happy - (Columbia) label looks similar to above - both sides zip along nicely little or no improvisation as far as I hear but it all sounds pretty jazzy. Wilbfur swallows some clarinets as a finale (see above). I'd never hear of him until hear Part One of the Allen's compilation. Next Two US Brunswick's by Teddy Wilson-nice clean labels like below (only no Billie) I'll see you in my dreams/Tea for Two It's swell of you/There's a lull in life Finally Meade Lux Lewis - Honky Tonk Train Blues/Whistlin Blues- (HMV) rec Chicago 7th March 1937- label earlier than above - the picture of Nipper is coloured in but the number's the same

a giant , glad I managed to see him once in person. RIP
-
Got my copy yesterday . Looking forward to listening . love this period of his work
-
The Fawkes Turner Sextet- Takin it Easy ( Decca)- not as a Trad a session as you might expect. Lots of blues , no banjo and plenty of modern touches by the Dirty Bopper.
