  1. not being wild about Gabarek I bought this yesterday on the strength of Vesala and I'm not disappointed.
  2. Sonny Rollins- The Alternative Rollins (RCA France)- amazing that this sat in the can for so many years. Excellent Rollins and by no means scraps from the cutting room floor.
  3. Next up, Pat Metheny- 80/81- (ECM) Germany- by turns lush and by others vigorous. Nice one, even if I'm not a follower.
  4. always thought this a strange name for this album, sure it swings but that's not what his music was about. Although he lead only 2 BN sessions both are excellent.
  5. Cecil Taylor- Live at the Cafe Montmartre ( Debut ) Danish , mono, something excellent to start the morning and to go with my third coffee.
  6. very sad . A very fine drummer.
  7. Given that my photo of Chapin at the Glasgow Jazz Festival has been my avatar for the last 10 years, I guess you could say I like his music and will get this.
  8. For whatever reason, I'm a fan of that one! Likewise
  9. I hope he is comfortable and has those around him who love and know him.
  10. As I wait for my set to arrive , can anyone explain why other European '64 dates weren't included. I know these have been extensively booted. Was it for that reason or due to who originally produced the shows/recordings. Are all those concerts included in set originally produced by/for Mingus ? I'm not especially bothered by their non inclusion merely curious.
  11. I'd go for Tadd Dameron as arranger of any dream big band. Bill Holman would also be a good choice.
  12. I prefer vinyl on the whole but the sound of the Fischer beats the original Pacific pressing that I own. These reissues are pretty much a no brainer because the standard of the whole product is so very high. I have the Novus West Coast Hot CD and one of the Carter/Bradford LPs and I'll be up for JHL's reissue of any/all of these.
  13. all looks fine now, not sure what the problem was..
  14. Chris Connor - Complete Atlantic Recordings- I suggested this a while ago and got a positive response but who knows...
  15. Hmmmm. must be doing something wrong, I never see any threads returned when clicking on New Content or last 24 hrs , last 1 week etc.??
  16. Charles Mingus - Complete Debut Recordings (Fantasy)- don't listen enough to this set , firstly it's huge and secondly the sound Q is slightly below moderate.
  17. Jazz on 3 - LJF LIve from Ronnie Scott - recorded on Friday night, somehow I managed to lop off the last 30 mins of the show so by missing Ambrose Akinmusire. Luckily should have got it on my DAB albeit at a lower bit rate.
  18. A sunny Sunday morning, first up George Cables -Cables Vision- (Contemporary)- electric piano dates it, but none the worse for that.
  19. Maybe-could it really have been that long ago. I'm sure it was here , it was either in a Clifford Brown or Bennie Green thread IIRC. Possibly deleted , I couldn't find it either.

    Ted Curson RIP

recorded Oct.17th 1976. Nine piece including conga ! It's a while since I spun this but I recall it being pretty good writing , arranging and playing . Sidemen include Chris Woods (as), Nick Brignola (bs) Andy LaVerne or Jim McNeely (p) , Dave Friesen (bass)r Steve McCall or Bob Merigliano (drms) Sam Jacobs (Conga),
  24. I've the Monk and the Getz sets and these sound great, pressing are excellent. I've a very soft spot for these recordings and have a hunch they could sound very good on LP. Tempted, I am.

    Ted Curson RIP

Very sorry to hear this. I have always taken Curson's appearance on a set a very positive sign that it'll be worth getting/hearing.
