Robert Glasper frequently name checked Dilla at a gig several years ago. Glasper was playing jazz at that point well before the recent experiments on "Black Radio". Back then his work seemed to have rhythmic influences coming from Hip-hop much in the same way that Vijay Iyer still does. Pretty refreshing I thought and hoped it might have attracted a wider audience to jazz. Personally I think Glasper should have stuck at that formula longer . I find his most recent CD a waste of talent and time.

I only got "Kofi" a year or two ago and was very impressed. He'd clearly been listening to Miles but it was promising something a little different.

A good one !

I'd have to disagree with you there - specifically in his prime (1950's). Into the 1960s, another story of course. What meant to say was that he struck me a less "showy" than Lee. I prefer 50s Byrd to Morgan as a consequence

I have always liked his playing. Never as individual as say Kenny Dorham and as technically gifted as say Morgan but he played well, wrote good tunes and produced some damn fine LPs. Never followed his output post 1969 but most of what came prior to then was top drawer. RIP

Just got mine. Initial comments as above and add that I like the package as a whole but the liner-note-poster is cheap and a very poor idea.

I'd not heard of that one but a quick search suggests it should be stellar with this line up. * Tomasz Stanko - trumpet * Tomasz Szukalski - tenor sax * Palle Danielsson - bass * Edward Vesala - drums

I know what you are saying but I continue to enjoy these ECMs on their own terms , even if livelier recordings are to be found elsewhere. Looking forward to this. I've yet to hear a duff Stanko.

Morgan was a fine player. I too like many of his recordings and he wrote some excellent tunes. Ultimately his BN is a bit uneven. SFNL. Is perhaps his best but " Procrastinator" is also damn fine. Regarding avantgarde dates do check out Grachan Moncur's "Evolution".

Happy Birthday Colin, I'm still wading through my files to see if I can meet your needs !!

Nipper, hope the analogy does fully realise itself. Mosaic deserves to survive ! -

Fortune Mag Article: When the price of music goes to zero

Check out the 78 thread and you'll see a few of us think the only ( ok best) way is to hear music of that vintage on shellac:) -
I looked at the costs of using Jazz Messengers vs Mosaic. Ordering to the UK the Spanish outfit only made sense when ordering a Select. Otherwise Mosaic seemed only marginally more costly and then you get their brilliant customer service. Witness , I only quite recently opened a disc of my Art Pepper select , to find it defective. Now Mosaic weren't able to replace he disc for the obvious OOP reason. I was however given discount off my next purchase . Not bad I'd say, especially as I must have ordered the Pepper set some 4 yrs. or so previously. Amazing service in my book. They get my custom.

THE SEVEN "HOT AIR" MEN. ".Harlem Madness/ Navy Blues". (Columbia) British pressing, recorded January 9, 1930... 2 pretty good sides from a studio band with Phil Napoleon on trumpet. Here he sounds at least as good as Red Nichols , who sounds fairly similar to my untutored ear.

I'm less enthused with this set , I found it a bit dull. I usually have plenty of time for Farmer and Hall, but this one remained earth bound.

That's the one I have - sub titled Vol 2 : Modernism to Postmodernism. (Man sell) 2000,

Fud's compositions sound quite unlike anything else I'm aware of from that era. The Jazz Oracle set is a great show case for Fud in general, only wish there were more comps. by Fud.

I assumed he had a scalp condition.

He's been hyped over here quite a bit. Jazzwise magazine and BBC R3 Jazz on 3 have been very enthusiastic. His best work is mixed with soul numbers but he's undeniably got a great voice , band and compositional skills. Plenty to enjoy but I've not returned to either of CDs that often.

Charles Jackson "The cats got the measles"/ "I got what it takes but it breaks my heart to give it away" (Paramount) . My first real Paramount , ok it's not jazz but a decent blues side. Hardly what you'd call raw blues but fine none the less. Bought today, edge bite removes first few seconds only and the rest plays pretty well, no skips etc. Mine for £2, I was quite happy

MIne's pre-ordered. I think the new Convergence Quartet's due on No Business - maybe that's what you were thinking of? Both feature AH after all and I think he may have posted the info somewhere - or my imagination's playing fast and wild again..... Yes, it's that way around! The record with Joe is on OTOroku - should be out very very soon indeed (I believe the sleeves have just been held up at the printers, but the records themselves are pressed). The new Convergence Quartet record should be out in March, and that's on NoBusiness Got the download "Go codes" the other day . Think I'll wait just a little longer for the real thing
