A bit late to the party but various things have stopped me getting this off my DAB radio and onto a CD so I can listen to the session properly rather on my bedside radio !! Great session with immaculate playing by all. Bass clarinet is always appreciated and I like it here against the jabbing violin and piano. Certain figures and parts seem to recall bygone styles of swing. A shuffling grooves are hinted at yet never materialise. There is a forward rhythmic thrust which appears to rush each track by, as different configurations of what each instrument is tasked with doing continually seems to vary. My choice of words is poor but for those unlucky enough not to hear the session its sort of like Monk meets Bang meets Frisell meets ...AEC. Great sound too, pity I wasn't savvy enough to record the Hi-Res broadcast on the web because the 192bit R3 DAB broadcast sounds lustrous and suggests that it would sound even better in HD or vinyl for that matter

I'd go this way.

Lucky Thompson Just one more chance/ Boppin the blues (RCA) Sonny Thompson Screamin boogie/The fish (Esquire- UK) Two very different Thompsons, this morning . The Sonny Thompson is raw honking/screaming stuff,

Dannie Richmond- (Gatemouth)- decent hard bop date, nothing extraordinary but the side long Cumbia and Jazz Fusion gets pretty heated. Good sound from RVG. Not come across Gatemouth until I picked this up in NYC recently. mine has this cover

NRG Ensemble arrived this morning. My first exposure to Hal Russell, damn this sounds good , wonder why I've put off exploring his work for long. That may be due to the Penguin guide , which I used to read avidly, being less than 100% enthusiastic. Early days but I hear a lot of what Swedish players such as Paal Nilssen Love, Mattias Stahl etc bring to the table. I expected this music to be hard work but it's pretty accessible if you have a open ear. Generous bonus tracks too and the sound is top notch. Looking forward already to the next instalment. Love this.

Following on from the Spike Hughes 78s earlier today , a natural progression to one of the best by the Duke. Had the CD for years and it's been a favourite but this LP edition recently purchased for £1 sounds wonderful. Duke Ellington - New Orleans Suite ( Atlantic - UK pressing)

Added another Spike Hughes & His Negro Orchestra UK Decca to my mini collection , so I've spun them all this morning. Really glorious music which should have a higher profile. Ellingtonian in influence but with something else added. I have all this on the excellent Retrieval CD set but as ever the sound of the original 78s takes some beating. Desert island material for me. Bugle call rag/ Pastoral Firedbird/ Donegal Cradle Song Music at Midnight/ Music at sunrise

some "new" shellac for the first time in 3 months, got some nice Hawk Coleman Hawkins Bu-Dee-Daht/ Yesterdays (Apollo 752), nice band with Dizzy, Max, Oscar Pettiford etc , Feb 1944 - I was very pleased to find this Jamaica Shout/ The Day you came along - (Parlophone) Sept 1933 Avalon/ Star Dust - (HMV) - the latter side a great meeting with Django and Grappelli playing piano
-
Larry Young _ Heaven on Earth - (BN Liberty)- sounding much murkier than on the Mosaic set. The LP sounds quite gritty- maybe just my copy ?
-
Cat Anderson- plays w.c. handy Black and Blue- a really lovely set in their usual excellent sound. A number of Ellingtonians along for the ride inc, Harold Ashby, Aaaron Bell, Sam Woodyard, swings pretty hard.

I've really been enjoying Nicole Mitchell's Emerald Hills-(Rogue Art), from 2009. I'm a bit behind the curve here given when this thread was started as this was my first exposure to her. Very impressed I am. Any other recommendations??

i was totally ignorant of AT until Bright Mississippi which I really enjoyed (initially, perhaps it's wearing a bit thin now). I tried the collaboration with Elvis Costello which I have to say I didn't really warm to.

Probably still the only way to hear that great music as originally heard by whatever parts of the worlds were listening to it. Maybe, as Bill Laswell(?) says, the technology wasn't in place to present it "fully", but this music was not meant to be "fully revealed" on record (or even live), I'm convinced. The "murk" is just as much a part of what it all "means" as is any other part of it. I gave this one a listen last night ( well one side of it). I hadn't played it in years but it sounded excellent, not much murk as far as I could tell, also not much evident of Miles on the side in question. Must listen to it fully.
