  1. Lucky Thompson — A Lucky Songbook In Europe MPS Please.......
  2. I have the Six 78 and it's pretty hot and as I've mentioned before I love it. I also have a version of "Is she my girlfriend" by the Golden Gate Orchestra , lame pop tune IIRC !
  3. When You're Feeling Blue (Stevens-Purvis) Parlophone R890 Down Georgia Way (Purvis) Parlophone R698 I've all of two Jack Purvis sides which seems to account for a quarter of his output as a leader. Played these back to back as I've been eyeing the Purvis Jazz Oracle set. He's clearly in the thrall of Louis but a fine player with a great band including Rollini and a fine piano player I've not come across (knowingly) Frank Froeba. The two sides are on very very clean UK Parlophones. Late 40s issues I'd guess but pressings not dubs ,so sound great.
  4. good description of this set. It's solid and won't disappoint but won't set the hills on fire either. But then that was never its intention
  5. Some British jazz by the really excellent Spike Hughes. Known primarily for his Negro Orchestra dates with Carter/Hawk et al, he also recorded some pretty original compositions with British bands in London. I'm sketchy on details but this interesting site has a fair bit about him http://www.jabw.demon.co.uk/spike.htm I've three 78s of his recorded in London all on Decca, some wonderful Duke inspired compositions with decent solos. Buddy Featherstonehaugh on BWO as far I know but plenty of evidence from these sides that at least when it comes to Spike Hughes jazz in Britain was in rude health in the Thirties. I think these three are in chronological order. Joshua fit de battle ob Jericho (sic)/ Roll Jordan Sirocco/Six Bells Stampede Buddy's Wednesday Outing/ Long night scamper
  6. CLEO BROWN - Latch On/Slow Poke ( DECCA 795 ) CLEO BROWN - BREAKIN' IN A NEW PAIR OF SHOES/ You're my fever ( Decca) Pleasant lightly bluesy voice and more than decent stride piano with bass/guitar very much in the background. I wasn't at all familiar with Cleo Patra Brown until i got these today , although I notice GOM had a radio show several years ago featuring her and other women musicians. Basically a female Fats Waller but more subtle and more of a blues singer . All in all very nice. I think these sides are on a Hep CD by Miss Brown.

    Jazz Oracle

I've been trying to enjoy the Celestin/ Morgan release but my copy will not play beyond track 6 . Luckily I've managed to copy the whole disc and listen to that instead. Great music indeed . The liners make play of the fact that of the 35 sides recorded by black bands in the 20s there are 23 on this disc. So my query is simple what are the other 12 and are they on CD??

Stop & Listen! - Rare & Hot Black Bands 1923-1930 The Missourians King Oliver Blues Singers & Orchestra Received the Frogs above last week along with Bennie Moten Vol 2. All very fine releases upto the usual standards. There's some very fine playing especially on Stop &Listen which I like immensely. Some pretty obscure sides on all of these . The Missourians occupy roughly half of their disc with other tracks featuring Missourian alumni in small earlier groups. The otherwise excellent liner notes don't refer to these sides. Pity. All recommended needless to say.

    Agreed
  11. In my experience Mosaic are extremely attentive to complaints. I'm sure they'll sort it out to your satisfaction.w
  12. Happy Birthday Clifford . Have a good one.
  13. I got a link to "get my reward" ( whatever that is , download ...??) emailed from kickstarter but it didn't work. I'll try again later. cover looks excellent and totally not what you might expect. Looks mature and exciting at the same time. What was the idea behind the cover ??
  14. I think I've seen him live just once. He appeared here in Edinburgh with Clark Terry's band some time in the early nineties. Must see if I can find my negs as I took a number of B&W shots.. Of his recorded output I think I'd rate his various appearances with Lee Konitz.
  15. how is that Clifford? Interesting line up indeed but hefty price tag to europe I didn't take to the 'year of the boar' release much and was underwhelmed by that line-up live but anything with Adasiewicsz is worth my attention I find hmm . I checked out the price. At £26 or so I wonder how many will make their way across the pond. I enjoyed Year of the Boar FWIW.
  16. Original Memphis Five Static Strut / Tampeekoe (Victor) 20039 Varsity Eight/ Lou Gold - No One/ Show me the way ( Cameo ) 694 Two more from yesterday with very contrasting sound. The immediacy of the sound on the Victor is astonishing for what must be an acoustic recording. Two pretty swinging and reasonable hot sides. The Cameo disc can't hide it's budget heritage. Also acoustically recorded and in reasonable condition it's pretty noisy. I wonder what a mint Cameo might sound like. The Varsity Eight play well enough without really setting things on fire. Rollini gets some space. Lou Gold on the flip is really quite decent and quite jazzy. This is the only Banner I've got and it's a great side. Must see if I can locate it.
  17. Anyone have any comments regarding the transfers and how they compare with previous releases?
  18. Stanley Cowell- New World - (Galaxy)- curious mix of styles. Despite high commercial overtones and the use of voices on a number of tracks I quite like this.
  19. Thanks Jeff for your detective work. Now spinning another of today's purchases University Six- Then I’ll be happy/ Smile a little bit -(Harmony) - two hot sides and not a novelty or dance tune in sight. Very good sound too.
  20. Original Indiana Five ( Dixie Jazz Band) / Ted White’s Collegians- Coffee Pot Blues/ Crazy Words Crazy Tune (Oriole) USA . Not sure who plays with TWC but it's a fun side with some decent solos. There's a nice solo by a bass clarinet. Any ideas who?
  21. Agreed re Cisco , but as I recall a poster here disagreed. I have the DG and Hancock's Takin' Off both of which sound excellent to my ears.
  22. according to liners of Lars Gullin Vol 2 1953. Only quartet tracks were released on 78rpm in Sweden with two Gullin originals The Front and North Express appearing on an album with Ake Persson. Release dates for these Swedish issues are not given.
  23. Hank Mobley - Hi Voltage- (BN Liberty- rvg ) always liked this session, it works as well as any later Mobe sessions with a decent extended cast. Perhaps not as inspired as Slice of the Top but good none the less.
  24. Bill Perkins- Killer Joe (Fresh Sound)- standards only on this pleasantly laid back session. Solid playing.
  25. http://otoroku.limitedrun.com/news Ok this might interesting to certain parties. I thought I'd read that this coming out on NoBusiness.. or maybe that's something else. Looking forward to hearing more from Red.
