  1. Chico Hamilton Quintet – Gongs East! (Warner Bro WEP 6005) UK 4 track EP
  2. I like that idea, but perhaps it doesn't fit with JLH preferred method of distribution.
  3. I used Man Ray because I was at a lecture on Abstract art the other day. A participant who clearly loved art described this collage by Man Ray as a gimmick in the same way you as I understand it, label McLean's output. He and you are of course entitled to your views but they are not ones that I share.
  4. I recall struggling with McLean's sound when I was new to jazz. I feel very luck to have seen him live with Art Blakey when I was feeling my way into jazz. Yes, his sound is difficult to take at first like your first ever taste of beer , coffee or tea. For me once I got his sound in my head I quickly reversed from dislike to loving. Same goes for Von Freeman or Man Ray. art or gimmick ?
  5. from the same recent haul Fletcher Henderson- Queer Notions/ It's the talk of the town -( Columbia) UK- some fine Hawk herein. Coleman Hawkins- Dedication/ Chocolate Dandies- Smack !- (Commodore)- 2 lovely sides , especially Dedication The Teagarden Boys and Trumbauer Swing Band- I'se a muggin Parts 1 & 2- (Victor) Frankie Trumbauer There'll come a time/Mississippi Mud -(Parlophone) a mid 30s pressing with less groove wear than my purple Parlophone all this Hawk has me really looking forward to the Mosaic
  6. Interesting , I knew the Harmony was a late acoustic but not the reasoning behind it. The sound is pretty good for an acoustic recording so perhaps the money wasn't entirely wasted.
  7. something that's too often ignored in the pursuit of completeness ( by producers and listeners alike)
  8. Johnny Hammond Smith - Black Coffee- (Riverside - stereo)
  9. handful of nice new additions Blance Calloway- Casey Jones/ Washboard Serenaders-Washboards Get Together-( HMV) UK- both sides overflowing with forced hokum but nice late 20s/early 30s pressing The Dixie Stompers- St Louis Shuffle/Have it Ready- (Harmony) Frankie Trumbauer Jimtown Blues/The Laziest Gal in Town ( Varsity) Frankie Trumbauer - Trumbology/For no reason at all - (Parlophone) UK- early pressing Eddie Lang- Farewell Blues/ After you've gone- (Decca) UK-there are 4 lovely sides issued in the UK across 2 Deccas and 1 Panachord- so you need three 78s to get all 4. The Late Ed Lang- There'll be some changes made/ Church Street Sobbin Blues-(Parlophone) -UK California Ramblers-That old gang of mine/- The Columbians Dance Orch- No No Nora -( Columbia) Flag label- Adrian Rollini is on the Ramblers, no idea of personnel on the other title- nice jazz feel if little improvisation
  10. he's the rear of my Brunswick, with his name spelt Benny rather than Bennie
  11. a fine session which I have on a nice Brunswick LP
  12. still getting plenty mileage listening to this one, it's been close to my turntable for several months.
  13. Received Extension CD yesterday, sound is very full with enormous bass sound. I have a mono LP version which sounds is great and is in perfect condition but it doesn't quite have the majesty of this excellent CD version. If only all reissues sounded this good......
  14. another thumbs up for 'Serious Gold' Pye- not sure if this has seen a CD issue.
  15. I got mine from Jazz House Records for £26. So slightly cheaper than amazon. Alan at JHR is also a good source of Music Matters BN issues for £45 which seems a pretty fair price. His shipping costs are very reasonable
  16. The Jazz Couriers - Tippin'-Live In Morecombe 1959 this recent vinyl only issue (Gearbox Records) of live date by the Jazz Couriers is pretty heated ( but it's the only JC issue I've heard. Sound is good , it's a professional recording but not up to the level of RVG on location.
  17. My local record store was pretty cool IMO. In store performance by a musician, a decent selection of RSD vinyls (no jazz and most of which I'd never heard of) . I did pick up one 7inch by Cookie Duster which is pretty good pop/rock. More significantly I met a couple of very small local record producers for Scotland's Indie scene Song by Toad and Gerry Loves Records. I took a chance on what they were offering and have heard some very good indie rock by groups totally unknown to me - Paws, Lady North, Meursault and Yusuf Azak.( pictured below - my photo)
  18. 78 microgroove ?
  19. I've avoided Stan Kenton for years but a recent deluge of Kenton LPs in the local Oxfam had me interested, so currently listening to a 3 EP edition of Contemporary Concepts - Capitol UK- I couldn't help notice the extraordinary list of soloists also the following EP (Capitol UK) plus Kenton Showcase (Capitol UK)- I noticed that Dave Schildkraut is a soloist
  20. Happy Birthday from Scotland !!!!!
  21. Ok pretty pointless but I was playing around with my macro lens and thought I'd share some different Parlophone labels from my collection. These are ordered roughly in the sequence in which they appeared ( to the best of my knowledge). I'm no expert but the ones with the horn behind the £ sign and purple label editions are the oldest. I've only one purple label which I think are the earliest issues. Parlophones all seem to play very well what ever the label colour I like the original sleeve on this one
  22. Clunky

    Hal McKusick

Sad loss but he leaves a fine legacy in some really excellent sessions
  23. I neglected to mention one other purchase The Original Memphis Five- She Wouldn't do (What i asked her to)/ More- Columbia - flag label like this one
  24. Dude! The few Brit Parlophones I have sound great. I have loads of UK Parlophones, the earlier laminated ones sound the best I'm told but i've found them consistently good and they're not expensive as here US originals are more sought afte.r
  25. Five Birmingham Babies Indigo Blues/ Lou Gold- Roll 'em girls (Perfect)- 1925 vintage brown 78 with pretty heavy surface noise but still listenable. My only non black 78. Original Dixieland Jazz Band- Jazz me blues/St Louis Blues - Victor -(batwing)- near mint 78 other than minor edge damage, plays very nicely Fletcher Henderson - I'll take her back of she wants to come back/Money Blues - (Columbia 388D)- worn but listenable, Jelly Roll Morton Buddy Bolden's Blues/The Crave (General)- again near mint- JRM sounding jolly of not especially profound. this plus several Bix's and a Miff Mole on Parlophone, not forgetting a couple of EKE Victors- all bought yesterday
