His is a nice chap and came across very well, he also denied he was the future of jazz and didn't strike me as egotistical at all. I even started enjoying the music, .......... but it's not jazz.

I know none of these but reckon the Kikuchi and Lehman could find a home in my collection. I have enough EST/Mehldau to last some time and to be honest I'm tired of both.

Lester Young/Basie Set Selling Well
Clunky replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
One area where their commitment and competence are not in question. Indeed ! what is the EU import charge, it's a while since I received a Mosaic, is this something new in addition to VAT and the Post Office/DHL handling fee ?? -
Ingrid Laubrock's Anti-House broadcast on BBC radio in March 2011 was excellent

I have to confess her name got me paying attention

Thanks for this, sounds promising,

Hank's new record- its own thread
Clunky replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in New Releases
I like Bennie Green, so if it was, that's OK with me. I'm sure the liner notes will reveal all. Hank's name on the cover no doubt sells more. Looking forward to hearing Walter Davis Jr., too. It's fine with me too but does make me wonder how much Hank we will hear. Looking forward to it anyway. Sound quality sounds really pretty good for 1953. -

Judging by the clips it sounds more like it was Bennie Green's date, he seems to take the lead in most of the samples -
RICHARD "GROOVE" HOLMES - GET UP AND GET IT! ( Prestige- blue label RVG stereo)

are there jazz standards you strongly dislike?
Clunky replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Maybe, but then there's Art Tatum. I struggle with Willow Weep for Me -
Zbigniew Namysłowski - Kuyaviak Goes Funky (Polish Jazz Vol. 46, 1975)- Miles (IASW/BB) is the obvious reference point but this isn't really all that derivative. Pretty good IMO.

At the Edinburgh Jazz Festival quite a number of years ago I attended a lunch time gig by the Junior Mance Trio. I sat down and was surprised to find out that Junior wasn't well. Instead Stan Tracey, John Bunch and Paul Harrison played short solo sets. I was enthralled by Stan but probably loved Bunch ( who I hadn't heard of at that point) the most.

It is being sold as a jazz record though.

James Clay- A Double Dose of Soul-( Riverside) DG stereo- nice album well recorded by Wally Heider in excellent stereo sound.
-
Yes it is time for something new but this isn't it IMO. I listened to the whole album when NPR had it streaming and it was a real turn off for me. I wanted to like it because I respect Glasper , his aspirations and his previous output,

Jimmy Heath- Swamp Seed - (Riverside) mono
-
Agreed, I like Robert Glasper , seen him once live and have 3 of his CDs , if you believe him his current music is some new frontier but I was very disappointed by this MOR slush. Awful. Blind alley. Reverse.

mine's not arrived yet, the CDR I made up from the download will have to suffice for now arrived this morning...so maybe yours is imminent. You'll not be disappointed, I'm sure Arrived with the postie this morning , daughter still in bed so I'll play it later but packaging looks great. I really hope there's more to come from Otoroku

Jan Fryderyk Dobrowolski The Art Of Improvisation (Muza) Poland- this pianist has technique to spare, lilting melodies give way to some pounding of the ivories. In places reminds me of Cecil Taylor but really the music is much more meoldic. Myra Melford perhaps might be a better choice. Interesting anyway, Nicely recorded too. Pity , I've had a few sub optimal Steeplechases which looked ok but didn't sound that way. Criss Cross vinyl is worse for hit/miss vinyl in my experience.

Bill Coleman a Paris 1936-38 - (Parlophone) UK - strong transfers Swing jazz of the highest order, as with many LPs of this era highly idiosyncratic programming ( ie not chronological) but the music really flows, with outstanding playing including Alix Combelle on clarinet. Vol 1 next. Hawk's influence on the tenor sax players evident.

Omer Simeon - plays... Ace of Hearts (UK) Dug this out to hear Omer Simeon's version of " Beau Koo Jack" played by his trio in 1929 and then Earl Hines big band version from slightly earlier that year on "Earl Hines Chicago Highlife" (Connifer)UK . The Simeon version wins but the Hines album has some excellent QRS piano solos from Dec 1928. The Hines' LP liner admits that these rather dusty transfers( by JRTD) were made from dubs dating from the late 30's. Not sure if these have seen remastering from the original discs or parts since this Connifer Lp was issued in 1988.

Thumbs up for this 2CD set of Johnny Dodds on Paramount from Frog. mastered by Doug Benson ( new name to me). The Oliver Paramounts sound better to me than those on the Off The Record set. The sound is perhaps slightly over damped for my liking , I could do with a bit more hiss but it's nothing to complain of in my view. Some very nice sides only a few of which i knew from a handful of 78 dubs. Unless you have a closet of mint Paramounts this is probably as good as you are likely to get. Very rapid service from Paul Swinton at Frog. I also picked up the Jimmy O Bryant set but have yet to spin it.

Barney Kessel - Some like it hot (Contemporary) King Japan

decent transfers on this LP - Billy Banks & his Rhythm Makers (CBS)- hot jazz but vocals not helpful. Banks is ok but occasionally gets in the way. The high point of Eddie Condon's career? next up the June 1924 Gennett solos by Mr Jelly Lord on Ferd " Jelly Roll" Morton (Fountain FJ 104) - decent transfers by John RTD. Recent purchase and my first exposure to these tracks.
