  1. I think acoustic recordings are always going to be a bit of challenge and I have limited tolerance for the very worst Parker sessions ( ie some from France 1949). I've grown very accustomed to pops and clicks and groove noise over the past 3 years as I've added to my small collection of 78s. In some cases I'm very encouraged by CD and LP transfers of the material. Generally an original 78 gives the music more punch and better dynamic range than most CD or LP transfers. I thought that the recent Lunceford and Duke Mosaics were very respectful to the sound from the sources, the Louis Mosaic less so. Having tried some of my own 78 transfers I've opted to use no NR as the facility built into Audacity results in very dull sounding music with metallic sounds.
  2. Apart from jealousy, I felt uneasy watching that and looking at the website. I love the pleasure of finding an unusual LP in wee shop ,not buying them ay huge prices on eBay. That video seemed make the LPs little more than a trading commodity to be bought and sold by the book for as much as possible. It should be about the music.
  3. I can see why you were so excited by these. How's the sound on Shavers' picture disc ?
  4. Very well done
  5. Picked half dozen 78s today, three early British Bebop sides Jive Bombers -Jive Bombers Re-bop/Groovin'High. (Regal Zonophone MR3799)-October 25th, 1947 Kenneth Sommerville (tp), Kenneth Franklin (as,cl), Stanley Walker (p), Stanley Musgrave (g) Ronald Arrowsmith (b), Sidney White (d). and the rather less successful Melody Maker's Jazz Rally -Blue Moon part 1 & 2 June 29th, 1947 (UK Columbia) Reg Arnold (tp), Woolf Phillips (tb), Frank Weir (cl), Ronnie Scott (ts), George Shearing (p), Pete Chilver (g), Jack Fallon (b), Norman Burns (d). and Vic Ash Quartet - Doxy/Blue Lou (Tempo) February 18th, 1956 - Vic Ash (cl), Terry Shannon (p), Pete Elderfield (b), Benny Goodman (d). the 1947 sides are of interest but ultimately a poor copy of the real thing
  6. Music Improvisation Company ECM 1005 - US pressing - £10 - probably not a great find really but about as much as I'd pay for this sort of music. Interesting and most un-jazz like.
  7. Hmmm... I've have nothing under the tree this Christmas
  8. I think the Bix and HRS sets contain important music. I really like Tal Farlow, especially his work with Eddie Costa but his music isn't of the same calibre
  9. Maybe you're aware it was also released in the Americans Swinging in Paris series paired with Les Stances a Sophie. But I agree it would be nice to have a CD issue from Chuck with the original art, etc. Chuck's been over this before, but he licensed the tapes from EMI to do the vinyl "back in the day." He'd have to do that again for the CDs, which is probably expensive and not easy to do. They were originally released as Pathe LPs and the Nessa issues followed shortly after, though they had more pressing runs than the Pathe (and Odeon Japan) vinyl. I think he also said he still had the tapes that he used for the LPs, the CD issues of Les Stances a Sophie have all been needle drops as far as I'm aware.
  10. Very sad.
  11. Les Spann- Gemini- Jazzland (stereo) - unlike some of my Jazzland LPs this one sounds really good. Liner notes credited to OK and Chris A
  12. I think it's great that more are being pressed to allow those that don't follow this thread and others elsewhere the opportunity to get it. In all ways a quality reissue of the highest order , sets the bar pretty high. Looking forward to more gems in the future.
  13. The Sonny Terry has the oddest of B sides with a lightly swinging version of Pop goes the weasel by Terry Reilly both are really novelty numbers with the Terry clearly superior but certainly not a great blues side. An odd pairing
  14. Ralph Burns- Jazz Studio 5 - Decca- black/spectrum label ( not sure how else to describe it)
  15. Some more Don Byas Don Byas- Super Session/Melody in Swing- Supersession 1010 - with Big Sid Catlett- very nice Don Byas - Slam-in' around/ Billy Butterfield Anything-Supersession 1008 - Errol Garner on the Byas side and Shorty Baker trumpet on the Butterfield blues side- odd mix Playing around with EQ settings has been interesting. Using my equaliser to correct the RIAA roll off. I've found that settings can be varied widely to produce different results many of which can sound very different and yet all sounding good. It's no wonder remastering engineers have a nightmare and then get lots of stick from us lot regarding transfers.
  16. Leo is exceptionally fast in shipping orders , mine were here in less than 24 hrs. Second instalment include some nice Sun Ra - Live at Praxis ( 2CD ) a Night in East Berlin. Good Ra no filler.

  19. wonderful thanks !!
  20. jealous , I've I think, 3 or 4 of these and they're just as good as you say. Is this an album of 78s or individual releases ?
  21. I've a few of these , the pressings seems fine but the sound has been EQ'd to death.
  22. mine landed on the door mat today. Spun twice so far. I really have no reference points as where this belongs but it is really varied and sounds great. Well done and thanks.
