  1. two interesting quotes about that record: "Damn, that's a real bebop rhythm section" - Roscoe Mitchell "Oh yeah, you got the real tapes" - Eli Thompson Lucky is cross eyed here. Great date, not with standing facial asymmetry.
  2. No stupidity involved. I don't think there's a functioning website at the moment nor has there been for some time. I remember speaking with Hazel sometime ago and she was hopful that she'd found someone to rejuvenate it for her but that's obviously not come to fruition. Ogun's definitely a one-woman concern and I suspect there are other calls on Hazel's time. She's contactable via ogunrecords@googlemail.com and as stated above she's the most helpful of people. I second AH's recco of the Moholo/Wright disc and the latest Tippett Octet this list looks up to date http://www.efi.group.shef.ac.uk/labels/ogun/cogunc.html thanks , just what I was looking for....now where to start .....
  3. Ok please excuse my stupidity but I can't seem to find the Ogun site. I have very little on Ogun other that a few vinyls. Looking forward to hearing the Hawkins/Moholo session .
  4. Ronnie Cuber Cuber Libre Xanadu, 1976
  5. thanks for the thoughts . I'll give it a go.
  6. anyone heard "Trail of Tears" care to comment.? I've had "Way Head" (sic) BYG for some years and recently picked up Black Suite BYG which I've found equally as good. I wondered what his recent releases were like. He comes across as an interesting figure, see interview here Coursil interview BOMB magazine
  7. whilst we're all trying to help identify "Frank" (sorry Bev, no idea) what do people make of Music Improvisation Company on ECM? I've often thought to track it down but never got round to it I've got this one ECM 1005 , quite a recent purchase which hasn't fully registered other than it struck me as a difficult listen.
  8. Paul Whiteman- Ya da da/That's my weakness now- (Columbia) -late 30s UK reissue- with Bing and Bix, Fats Waller My very good friend the milkman/Shortnin bread (HMV)- 40s UK issue- all fun but some nice solos especially on Bread
  9. Having cycled from Biarritz to Perpignan over 6 days last June I can see the need to take substances to ease the pain. ...
  10. Archie Shepp- Steam (Enja), great trio record
  11. Tom Harrell- Moon Alley Criss Cross, decent debut recorded by RVG
  12. Woody Shaw - Setting Standards- Muse- Woody looking mean/sad but plays well. The rest of the cover shoot photos must have been dire.
  13. Arthur Blythe In the tradition CBS- one of a great series of sessions from Blythe on Columbia
  14. these two bought this morning :tup
  15. I saw him live a year or 2 ago and was impressed, great technique and developing a new approach to the piano trio. He's got to be commended for trying to take things forward rather than same old same old etc
  16. A better buy today , plays well despite the reputation of this label Jacques Coursil Black Suite BYG
  17. I must have been lucky until now with blue label Prestiges. Today bought (admittedly for only £5) Charles McPherson Con Alma on Prestige blue label, looked very clean , but there's periodic distortion which is one of my pet hates. I can abide all manner of crackles but not distortion. Disappointing.
  18. decent haul from record fair this morning Sonny Stitt & Bennie Green- My main man - Pye (UK- ex Chess , on very heavy vinyl)
  19. Red Garland Soul Junction Prestige (DG yellow label), bought at record fair today, Looked pretty dirty, cleaned up very well in the RCM, light crackle evident occasionally only, sleeve worn at edges and has split but all in all not bad for £3 .
  20. I don't know her playing but Tabligh is on it's way so I can see how Iyer fits with Wadada
  21. Leo Smith The Mass on the World -Moers Music , rec 1978
  22. a good example of fine remastering is Chuck's reworking of Indian Summer by Eddie Johnson, the LP always sounded good but the CD sounds even better despite digital limitations.
  23. Steve Lacy - Crops- Quark, sounds like a shoot out a minute or two into The Woe on side B.
  24. I've spun Snakeoil several times through and really like it. My only other Berne is Pre-emptive denial - Screwgun. I'd hardly played until the last few days it but it too is excellent and makes me wonder why I've ignored Berne's output.
  25. Brought this thread up to celebrate Wadada Leo Smith. His output over the past decade or so appears incredibly diverse. Despite my comments above (from 2005) I recently got and really enjoyed Heart's Reflections - Cunieform 2CD. Clearly comes from electric Miles but has it's own sound. Any one heard Tabligh by his more recent version of the Golden Quartet?
