Interesting - maybe the master tapes are lost? That would explain why Vocalion has, to date. not reissued an obvious title like 'Cleopatra's Needle'. Ok listening to the thing now UCCM 9243 , I can't now hear what I've referred to above. Sound is a little recessed but no worse than many a session , in silent sections with headphones there is some sound but I can't see why I thought this was a ND. So my apologies.

I have the CD edition of Cleopatras Needle from a few years ago . It's a great set and the sound of the CD is fine but I think its a needle drop. That being said it's perfectly decent to listen to and only sounds like a needle drop when head phones are worn.

I prefer McLean's BN sessions by some margin but his Prestige dates are pretty decent and well worth hearing. Saw him once live in Aberdeen in 1989? featured as part of a touring Art Blakey ensemble. It was one of Bu's last UK dates. The band also included Benny Golson & Curtis Fuller. I was totally in awe having just heard and been mesmerised by Cool and Struttin which was my first exposure to MacLean.

What do you think of the sound of this series? My local specialist store has them all at about £5 each and I'm tempted.. Bob, I have the Hubbard and Fuller discs. Sound is quite acceptable to my ears. the Brown sounds just fine to me

Thanks, I'm trying to avoid too many duplicates !! Probably in vain as my appreciation of Armstrong has only grown over the years. So far I've gone for The JSP set , Vols 2,3,5 in the Integrale series and the Mosaic box. I have the Victors on LP as well as a dozen or so 78s !! So Vol 10 seems not to duplicate things too much...

I've just got the Marion Brown CD in this series , sounds quite interesting, thought about the Pharoah S but the samples dont get me excited , the Shepp sounds very much better. Any opinions re which of the Alice Coltrane CDs to go for first ??. I have nothing by her.
