  1. there is a drummer on Snakeoil , it's alto/clarinet/piano/drums
  2. I lost that one in the divorce 15 years ago. (She wasn't all bad - she was a Milt Jackson fan.) I need to get it again, in some form. Don't get the Japanese CD. The sound is dead muffled. MG the Japanese CD version ( 60th anniversary ) I have sounds fine, although I do remember some debate regarding the sound of various issues of this title
  3. I still have my copy by the CD player as it's still in rotation. Very good CD
  4. As indicated in the ECM Parker/Mitchell thread I picked a copy in Fopp today, played through once and I was impressed but really need to give it more careful consideration over the next few days. I've seen Berne once but have only one other CD , so I'm no aficionado .
  5. glad to hear that. Currently anticipating imminent purchase and March gig my interest in this was stimulated by the Jazzwise article , sadly no chance of me catching their visit. Got this today in Fopp.
  6. agree re Kevin Le Gendre- he's a significant draw for me. If he says some new release is the business I'm likely to take note. Other writers need to be approached with caution.
  7. It's amazing looking at that list. At the the time it seemed as if the stream of high quality reissues would never stop. It was a great series very well done but certainly quite expensive here in the UK . In the pre-internet days I paid IIRC around £44 for the Konitz which seemed a lot at the time, although I've never regretted it !!! I ordered it though a local store who had real problems sourcing it.
  8. another :tup for Ballads , also on Tzadik is Standards, I had a harder time getting my head around The Sign of 4 with Pat Metheny (need to re-listen)
  9. currently enjoying Tim Berne - Snake Oil - ECM, There's no selling out on this one.
  10. many great Swedish jazz covers
  11. I gave up on both these publications some time ago. I found I could get more information about jazz from being a member of this forum! I gave up both but recently started back with Jazzwise. I view JJ as a lost cause. The latter had almost nothing on current jazz (of any type). Jazzwise is still pretty reasonable, worth getting IMO.
  12. It's that Vesala/Stanko winning team again, Clunky. (your Twet post last week IIRC) This one's escaped me so far but have fond memories of hearing a mates many years ago correct, Twet and this represent the sum total of my Vesala/Stanko holdings. I have Live at Remont on order though
  13. beat me to it , from issue 159 - Dec 2011/Jan 2012
  14. I do , it gets a brief review only , I'll look it up when I get home
  15. Edward Vesala- Heavy Life - Leo Finland -1980 . Great nonet including Stanko, Reggie Workman, James Spaulding, Chico Hamilton, Howard Johnson , Joe Daley . Heavy indeed.
  16. Setkani Supraphon , Rudolf Dasek on guitar, and Vladimir N Cekasin on alto , clarinet, and piano. Obscure Czech free jazz from 1971.
  17. I'm not clear what recording you're referring to here. The only ECM of Rivers that i've heard is Contrast and it's pretty good as far as I recall
  18. that looks interesting, I've not exactly been bowled over by his piano style but that line up sounds promising
  19. Eje Thelin Group - Live-76- Caprice, fine set on the free side. Thelin plays well , pianist Harold Svensson mixes piano and electric piano and sounds just right. Lovely
  20. Got this recently on LP and it's a good one Clare Fischer Extension - Pacific
  21. Tomasz Stanko – Twet-Warsaw, April 1974- free Ornette like material
  22. thanks for sharing
  23. Jimmie Lunceford- disc 3. Sound better than could reasonably be expected and so much better than LP transfers of this material that I have.
  24. a fine set for sure , only Bill Barron I've been disappointed in is Live at Cobi's 2 - sound is really appallingly harsh. Mars an otherwise interesting CD
  25. Randy Weston Tanjah -Polydor 1973- fine arrangements by Melba Liston
