I really enjoy the rather tamely titled Jazz Session featuring Dick Garcia- ABC Paramount - some very good playing all round including an early version of Ruby My Dear. On the strength of this it's more than a pity that he didn't lead more dates

Spinning loads of 78s including Christmas Carol on some HMVs, loads of Johhny Dodds but best of all... Louis Armstrong With Louis Jordan And His Tympany Five Life Is So Peculiar/You Rascal, You , Brunswick UK ( ex Decca) August 23, 1950, New York. Two great performances with quite modern alto backing from Jordan when he's not singing. A lovely session. Pops is tops as I've increasingly realised over the years and his music never seems to tire.

Sad news, saw him just once with a Danish Big Band. Will spin some Brookmeyer tomorrow. RIP

Got a handful of Jazz Collector 78s. All were issued in the UK around 1949 and feature dubs of some obscure ( to me at least) sessions Jabbo Williams Pratt City Blues/Jab Blues -Chicago 1930- (ex Paramount?) Will Ezell Old Mill Blues/Mixed up rag- Chicago 1928 (ex Paramount?) Johnny Dodds/Blind Blake Hot Potatoes/South Bound Rag- Chicago 1928 (ex Paramount?) Leroy Carr/ Hokum Band- Alki Blues/Easy Rider Blues- 1929 - prev unissued

I've yet to come across any 78s which sound at their best under RIAA, so I'm not sure although my collection isn't that deep. I play acoustic 78 with lower half of the RIAA curve and indeed often boost the bass a little more but I do correct the treble roll off. The advantage of the Radio shack EQ appears not to pollute the sound and it's very quick to alter.

In the annals of badly tuned pianos that one is right up there with Don Schlitten's Prestige piano of circa 1968 ! I'm sure I recall some wit suggesting that the piano hadn't been tuned between Monk's and Dolphy's appearances at the Five Spot ( Penguin guide??)

I've long appreciated Kenny, Our Thing was my first exposure to Kenny, Hill and Henderson !!!! I love it and its's right up there with my favourite BN sessions. I find it hard to pick out my favourite KD sessions as I've never heard weaknesses that I know other people hear.

good start, 78 labels are pretty addictive when there's rarely any cover art or sleeve notes

cholesterol med lipitor goes generic today
Clunky replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I can't see any statin being suitable for OTC use. Most OTC medicines are for self limiting short term illnesses not chronic disease management. The SPC for lipitor suggests periodic checking of liver function tests. I've never seen 3 monthly testing followed unless of course there have been specific concerns re LFTs. Statins do work and appear to well tolerated -
Count Basie Verve Mosaic running low
Clunky replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think my CD copy was about £35-40 from Rays ! The LP set was a 'wee bit' more.. I think the LP set was mastered from digital sources , but it sounds great none the less -
Count Basie Verve Mosaic running low
Clunky replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've not listened to Basie of any era for some time. Not sure why . Recall being underwhelmed by the Verve set preferring the Roulette live LP set ( which I scored for around £30 IIRC). I'd had some of the Verves gathered on a CompactJazz collection from my earliest CD buying days and found I preferred its economy to the full Mosaic. Time to revisit once I've revisited the Monk with Rouses that troubled Moms...... -
Ok ......... I confess..... true. . Plays fine a little rough at the end of each side

Sonny Rollins Live in Europe 1959 - Complete Recordings
Clunky replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
I'm confused. The banned item above appears to be a PD reissue which is legal in Europe. Is this correct and if it is, does that me all PD reissues are off limits (in this forum) ? I have no desire to fan the flames, only seeking clarity. I have some very nice Hep, Frog, Timeless PD issues to name just a few...... -
Big John Patton Oh Baby ! BN NY mono - signed copy

I did wonder how they knew I had one as I rarely ever register purchases. I've only ever bought two tunes off iTunes ( sweet home Alabama and my way - !!)
-
I did too, still waiting on my box to send it off

Very sad , he contributed some really amazing records to the music. From Warne Marsh to Bill McHenry , a real giant , saw him once IIRC with Lovano, Konitz & Frisell. RIP

what is a Blue Note King/Japan lp
Clunky replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
The McMaster CD of Maiden Voyage sounds pretty thin to my ears where as the Toshiba vinyl sounds very much better. -

Clunky replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
Agreed , I've found Kings and Toshibas to generally be excellent although not as good as Music Matters reissues ( which of course are quite expensive). I know that Kings seem more highly rated than Toshibas but they are pretty much on a par IMO. -
Poor old Monk/Rouse, their "stable" artistic vision for around a decade attracts complaints of complacency whilst Keith Jarrett has managed to stick to pretty much the same formula for 30 years.... None the less it is a matter of regret that Monk's Columbia output was so unvaried but each individual entry is strong. I recall the Tokyo set not quite jelling for me, i'll need to re-listen to see if Mom's is right.

Does sound persuade whether you will listen to a recording?
Clunky replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
to digress to a minor degree I've noticed that BBC Radio 3 broadcasts recorded from their on-line only HD service ( @320) sound very much better when burnt to CD than the standard 192 achieved by DAB or their iPlayer format. -

Bird overcomes all. true but there's enough reasonable sounding Bird out there to keep me away from needing to listen to the dregs. The Bird at Birdland 4CD set from Charly has some truly appalling sounding Bird which much as I love Bird I rarely listen to. I too have the Benedetti and on the whole it sounds as good as one could reasonably expect.
