Charlie Mariano's Beauties of 1918 should be reissued, it was on Pacific but I'm not sure if it was a west coast recording. I'ts a great date even if some of the titles might be a little corny.

Had this one a while, it's a good one, but then they all (almost all) are......my current hieracy of personal preference of some older Mosaic sets. (don't have the Bix set) 1. Lionel Hampton 2 Duke Small Group 3. Venuti/Lang 4. Chu Berry ( Cab's fault) they are all excellent but if the building were burning etc....

Cecil Taylor Unit Structures (NYC Mono)- did this come with a W63rd label ever? great record none the less, next up another new arrival Albert Ayler Spritual Unity (ESP Mono original), glad to hear this famous disc at last.

All remaining Miles LP sets riding off into the sunset
Clunky replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sad I agree, maybe some day they'll issue vinyl again. I'm on the fence re these last two sets , I have most of the material of both sets on CDs which sound just fine, I'm not sure I can justify to myself the costs of upgrading to vinyl but then again....... -
Same bargain source? I thought I was doing well with my CD version of this for £18. Yep.. same source as for my Basie LP set. The Mosaic LPs sound as good as my one W63rd Bechet. Not sure if they're digital LPs or not but they sound good enough to me. Nice to have all the material in order even the later sessions are not that riveting.

Kenton Presents is patchy with some twee stuff by Cooper but it's fine set as is the Hamilton. My contender might be the Buck Clayton set because of the decision to use unedited masters rather than those use for the LPs. Though the musicl is very fine, but in many ways more is actually less in this case IMO. Also them dropping vinyl , I now regret deeply although at the time they did it I couldn't have given two hoots !!!

For £12 , Sidney Bechet Mosaic LP set

Well, the order came today - by FedEx, as I wanted, even though I had only been charged USPS rate. And Customs didn't stop it. So that's a real nice Christmas present to myself. MG That's cool! My own 200$ order came by FedEx and passed customrs unnoticed as well, even though the cardboard box could house half a corpse... I wouldn't bet on it not having been noticed by customs. Back in May I got both of the Miles Mosaic Vinyl sets which were going OOP. Package arrived without delay or any incriminating marks to indicate that HM customs had been grooving to IASW. What da ya know when in October ( five months later) I get an invoice from DHL for £15 for custom charges. Even more bizarrely the VAT was calculated against the declared value of the LPs (£35) plus shipping costs. As this later cost wasn't marked on the box they guessed £37 postage. For obvious reasons I didn't bother to complain, as I'd have to dig out the invoice to reveal the true shipping costs of £15 and in the process reveal the cost of the LPs............................... So wait till April then you breath......

Release dates Lionel Hampton set, Piano Boogie Woogie Select
Clunky replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mines this way too. I'm sure this the last thing Mosaic needs. Given the number they must have mailed out already the shipping costs alone for all those replacement discs can't be good for their bottom line. Any rate I need "Fiddle Diddle" as much as I need " Fiddle dee dee". I've dropped them an email too but this gives me no pleasure given the costs they're likely to incur. -
This is part of my CD backlog, had the set 12 months and all discs are still sealed, I'm waiting for the appropriate moment to open it up............

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Clunky replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Got my set at 10.30 am today !!! Managed to listen repeatedly to disc one only. I know a bit of this material already from Lps but here it sounds great. Not too much cross-over with the Chu set ...really.... didn't put me off... How much overlap is there with the Chu set? check the discography on the Mosaic site for details, ( they're blocked at my work), 3 sessions IIRC. one session is duplicated in its entirety the other 2 are only partly documented on the Chu set. Incidentally my Hampton set is number 42 yet I received it the same day as MG (300). Hope Mosaic are happy with their level of sales on this one. -
I was too ashamed to admit my difficulty with the French only liners, great music though and very well recorded. Some hip vocals too !!!!

I've always been more of a lurker than a real contributor here but since day one ( or was it day 2) when I joined I've always loved this place. I've not really got to personally know many posters here yet I ( like others have said ) feel familiar and very comfortable in this company of strangers. I don't really go anywhere else for my jazz fix on the web. I doubt I'd bother with AAJ, just doesn't suit me (although I'm sure the folks there are mighty fine). I really hope this place stays.

I've never been disappointed with any session I've heard that featured KD. His playing was unique and highly identifiable. Only got Afro-Cuban this year courtesy of the RVG remaster. Love it....

Thanks Jim, I'll really miss this place but I can understand why you've had enough.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Clunky replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
end of last week, William Parker and Billy Bang ( their onlly UK date) in an exhilarating set , both were magnificent to say the least, free as you like but swung like hell, loved every minute of it. These two of course go back a fair bit. -
Goooooooooooooooooooooooooool
Clunky replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was at Hampden yesterday, we was robbed...as they say ...somewhere. First half was Italy's but the second was the Scots' by some distance, in my totally unbiased opinion. The final free-kick was travesty of justice.... but hey that's football. The Scottish players deserved to progress but it was a tough old group.......let's see how the auld enemy do next week........ -
