  1. I'll get the Jordan, Dorham and the Smiths, might be tempted to see what the Mogs from the 50s sound like compared to the mosaic set. The Mosaic set is a little harsh on Vols 1 and 2 but settles down fine after that. Davis Cup might also get upgraded, my conn edition is a little hard sounding
  2. I've this one on the way from Mosaic on Japanese LP, I'm hoping for good sound !!
  3. see you there. Loads of good stuff this year at EIJF including Bad Plus, Happy Apple, Bad Apple , Phil Bancroft etc ...even a bad ass dude in turban playing a B3...
  4. I decided in the end to go for the Clearaudio smart matrix RCM. It was available locally and is well made and apparently quieter than most. I believe that it has a lot in common with the Okki Nokki machine but has a number of trimmings added to make it quieter, heat/overfill cut out sensor, lid, etc. Have only cleaned 20 or so LPs so far. I had no idea so many of my apparently clean Lps were in fact so dirty. Lots of pops and crackles have disappeared and some LPs sound "smoother" than before. I'm using the provided Clearaudio fluid and also a 1:3 ratio of isopropyl alcohol to distilled water + few drops of wetting agent. Results seem the same for either solution. I've yet to notice improvements in dynamic range but happy not to hear a lot of low grade crackle. Still not entirely clear what fluid I should use. Why do some say avoid alcohol solutions. My dealer specifically recommended it over more expensive stuff he could easily of tried to flog me ?
  5. I got the first of these two sets the other day , like you say proto-mosaics. very nice, . Didn't realise there was a Volume 2 , I'll look out for it
  6. It took me ages to work out what DG, flat edge, flip-backs were and even longer the variations on the grading system and what the hell they mean ( anything to anyone) On Columbias I have a couple that have the 6eye label but in red/white rather than red/black, what were they about ?
  7. I got this not too long ago as a Japanese CD and it's one of my favorites among the Hutch/Land stuff. Peace Maker is just fine IMO,
  8. The music is good, but the sound isn't - Criss' alto does sound very shrill indeed, worse than usual. But these recordings were not very good in the first place... Agreed, even I find these hard work to listen to.
  9. From the AP: London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton said it cost $796,000 to design the logo by international branding firm Wolff Olins. the design is very poor IMO, real waste of money, my daughter could have done better and the money gone to charity.
  10. track 4 - always loved Rockin in Rhythm, nice use of vocal and pennywhistle? or is it overblown flute more african influences....
  11. track 1. Echos of Randy Weston and Monk, nice stuff especially the piano. Alto no slouch either track 2. reminds me of Art Pepper track 3 hardbop. Roger Guerin? track 7 Hi life style more references to Randy Weston track8 , excellent no idea who really nice compilation, strong African influence to many of the performances
  12. hope to listen to these later today now that I've worked out how to open RAR files !!
  13. Nice photo - very studious. But where's his sweater? MG in the laundry ?
  14. Another excellent sweatered session from Mance I've this one on order, as they've got it in my size...............LP
  15. Hello from Scotland
  16. This is a good one IMO. Don't know the others. Ortega's other Hat release "New dance " is better though
  17. Those were my sentiments exactly when I saw this list. I'll probably pass on the Shepp title, but the Sanders will at last be mine! Is this the first appearance on compact disc of this Konitz title? It's available on iTunes, but I've never heard it. Worth picking up? I got this on HMV vinyl the other day, it's nearly as good as the rest of Konitz other Verve titles, I haven't fully taken it in , but it doesn't come acorss badly at all.
  18. I'm not partisan here but Milan were diffident first half, then lucky, second half better but hardly entertaining unlike Liverpool
  19. Having sprung for the IASW and 63-64 vinyl sets I can see going for the Miles/Trane and Second Quintet sets even though I have 90% of the material already on CD. I had none of the 63-64 material and only the 1980s Cd issue of IASW which made justifying ( to myself that is) their purchase. The vinyls sets do sound good.....why did they stop vinyl... poor sales I guess judging by the numbers on my sets.
  20. Didn't get it at first but now I do, just as there shouldn't be a Hawk/Trane track on a Herbie Mann CD there shouldn't be a Ethel Waters post in Herbie Mann thread........
  21. Agreed , you wonder what exactly, is was that he did that made those Contemporary dates sound so good.
  22. I just got this CD only to be a little surprised to hear Hawk and Trane on the bonus track.
  23. one's an edited down version of the other, this album is ok but no great shakes I'm afraid to say
  24. The Fox Harold Land HiFi Jazz (mono)- recent purchase, more energy than the CD equivalent
  25. I voted yes as I'm keen to learn more about the genre.
