  1. Got the Vogue (UK) version of this date very recently. A bit of surface noise doesn't detract from a very solid performance and oustanding sound for the period. Very nice. Fletcher Henderson - The Indispensible- RCA 2LP- , great sound, listening right now to Shoe shine boy and others featuring Eldridge and Chu Berry.
  2. my thoughts too, but if you do spring for it you're get a real Mosaic box and not one with along UM number on your Oliver Nelson Concert Jass Band Studio set
  3. If the Verve Jazz Masters CD compilation is anything to go by this should be an interesting set. Any reason why the bigband sides fom Shirley Scott's "For Members only" ( Impulse 1963) have not been included AFAIk they're O.N. charts etc
  4. If interested the truly excellent Hep 2CD "Band box shuffle" is the place to go IMO
  5. Another really nice Dot is Brothers Condoli by Pete and Conte, I feel these guys get overlooked all the time. Excellent date
  6. Ornette On Tenor- Atlantic (mid 60s UK issue)- dark set really Easy Living- Ike Quebec- BN ( 1987 issue- sounds pretty good , unclear if BNs of this vinatge will inevitably have been mastered from digital tape)
  7. I find this one a little on the dull side. Atomic Basie is better IMO. Don't forget the Mosaic set of Verve sides. Improvement in the sound on this release really gives some of this material a whole new lease of life.
  8. The Hep 30's Basie material indeed sounds excellent ( 3 single CDs) , I've not heard the Decca set, I might add. Hep also do a very nice ( but hardly essential) Jubilee Alternatives set from the 40s. Again very good sound.
  9. Thanks for the tips, I have to see which of these recs are actually available.
  10. I know this isn't in the recommendations forum but any recs re ICP ? I love Misha M's work on Who's Bridge, Senne Sing Songand the disc with Dave Douglas (Four?)
  11. I was given a 4Gb Nano at Xmas and it's great , I have no intention in copying all my CDs and LPs onto it. In fact I have as yet only used about 1/4 of its capacity. Perfect for going running etc. Sound quality is very nice. Even the derided ear buds aren't too bad.
  12. At last got my copy of "Four hundred saturdays"... each Volume seems to get better and better. Just wonderful music and beautifully recorded.. roll on Volume 4.
  13. George Wallington - Live at the Cafe Bohemia (1955)- good date ,Byrd sounds feisty. The Rolling Stones- Let it Bleed- Atco (Mono UK pressing)- my favourite Stones LP
  14. I would be interested to know that the positive yield of MRIs done in the USA and how that compares to the NHS here in UK. MRI is not easily accessible here and it used only if clinically indicated ( usually considerable waiting lists). Most patienst find them too tight but there's no doubting their usefulness if used appropriately.
  15. some how missed this thread but picked this disc up anyway. Jazz Review (UK) had it as one of their top relases from 2005. It's very impressive and Moncur's chops sound just fine to me. Billy Harper is on fine form and I was really blown away by Gary Smulyan's baritone. Don't know any of Smulyan's own stuff but he sure sounds exciting on the big horn. Any recs?
  16. agreed, I've had an "airmail" order take 10 weeks from the USA to UK
  17. welcome to the big O, that's a long first post
  18. from a brief foray at a new store in town Dave Brubeck The Riddle- Fontana- (ex Columbia 1959). Curious date with Bill Smith (clarinet )subbing for Desmond and providing all the compositions. Not at all bad but tough on Brubeck that he's still out of favour.Way better than the meagre 2 stars given by AMG. McCoy Tyner- Focal Point- Transatlantic (Milestone)- dynamic stuff from Mr Tyner Arthur Blythe- Blythe Spirit- Columbia- decent 1980s date- despite what Penguin says he produced some very good dates whilst with Columbia- a bit under-rated Steve Lacy- The Door- Novus- good date with Sam Woodyard on one track
  19. great CD that one
  20. to fill my collection, I'd vote for Andrew Hill - Compulsion !!! Tyrone Washington- Natural Essence plus Jackie McLean- High Frequency Bobby Hutcherson- Total eclipse, Happenings The Sam Rivers/Andrew Hill session , Involution?
  21. The sound on the mosaic set sounds better than the old CD of the "Art of Pepper" that I have. Either sound perfectly acceptable IMO.
  22. I ordered the Wes set and Consecration by Bill Evans. Only received the former but have now been assured that the Evans' is on its way. I had a few of the Wes sets but mostly on very crummy German reissues put out by the Fantasy distributor that preceeded ZXY music. CD inserts printed on low grade paper , always creased up etc
  23. thanks for upping this, missed it entirely. I hada great week, took soem time off work, went running and took a ski lesson and on Saturday had a big bash for around 60 friends. We catered the whole thing which was pretty exhausting but great fun. Made several party CDRs slipping in the odd piece by AEOC and Ornette etc and gor away with it !!! Forty feels fine by me, not had so much fun and fuss on my birthday since I was a child. thanks all for your kind wishes
  24. FSNT seem to have a number of interesting looking new releases by Bill Carrothers, Chris Cheek and Ron Horton. I've rather lost track of much of their output over the last year or so, too many unfamiliar names, but his lot look pretty interesting. Anyone heard any of these, care to comment ?
