Clunky, are you sure? You need one or more $60.000 systems, Superman like super hearing, and incontinence diapers to make sense of the Atlantic Jazz catalogue on digital. But if the diaper fits ... Like I said all sounded good enough but I don't have multiple versions other than just a few tracks duplicated. Certainly Atlantic reissues are a real mess 6 of the 7 editions I have are European or US , so who knows how many there have been when you include Japanese editions.

Played all my Coleman Atlantics last night . 9 discs from 7 different reissue series . All sounded just fine once immersed in the music. Top performer would be Atlantic Original Sound 50th anniversary of "This is our music." mastered in Switzerland , Atlantic Masters digipak of -"Twins " was the poorest with "First Take" sounding muddy by comparison to the version on the toilet roll digipak of "Free Jazz"

Don Rendell/ Ian Carr Quintet-----------Live at the Union------(Stamford Audio) Slightly dusty recording but generally exciting 2LP set . Rendell plays well , even Brian Morton might agree.

Well that's not a good sign ... That SHM-CD is worth owning. I almost didn't purchase it, but reviews here swayed me. I too was swayed having not heard the session previously. I played it all the way through the other night as I relaxed by the fireside. It was mesmerising.

I've this Asch set which sports a rather less typical DSM cover (and not as good IMO)

I have "Proof readers" as a bonus on one Ornette disc- forget which

John Coltrane ------ Coltrane ------- (HMV) mono Great music, great pressing in wonderful sound. What's not to like .

I picked up "To whom keeps a record" in the recent "Japanese" 24bit edition. It shares 2 tracks with the 1988 issue of "The Art of the Improvisers" . The recent disc totally smokes the '88 disc by an uncomfortable margin. So I can see Lon's view point here. It would be a pity if this reissue of the box uses masterings which are over 25 yrs old IMO. If you get the new box report back here

Jimmy Giuffre------------Mosquito Dance---------(Choice) I'd forgotten just how good this 2LP set was (from 1972 & 1975)

A couple of Xanadu titles I was considering selling were spun this evening Charles McPherson---- Free Bop! A truly dire track opens side2 . Latinised schmaltz even Lou Levy can't revive . Otherwise pretty solid and enjoyable . Hmmm.... keep? Dolo Coker------All Alone A sure one to sell. Cutout sleeve, ring wear, edge wear and dusty vinyl. Quick clean. Played both sides- really lovely. No way is this going . Not doing so well in my quest to clear a little shelf space.

In fairness I think all Chuck appears to be pointing out is that it's all too easy to get hung on the medium rather than the music . Something I know I'm occasionally guilty of . Buying an LP because it's a vintage pressing rather than its musical content . Sometimes I find myself thinking, "would I buy this if it was a CD" . If no, then pass.

European Jazz Consensus------Four for Slavia-------(MRC) Germany Gerd Dudek and Alan Skidmore trade punches with bass/drum support. Good

I've had the SHM editions of Monk Vols 1 & 2 and Milt Jackson for a week or so. I'd rate all highly being a modest but noticeable improvement cf RVGs. I'll be keeping the RVGs which group tracks by session.

From Sonorama's website it appears that a Barney Wilen/ Lucky Thompson release is out later this month . Anyone know any details? I'm a confirmed LT addict.

Silver's Blue is undeservedly obscure as it's the equal of his BNs from the late 50s Tilt + 6 is excellent, i have this edition and it sounds great. Wilen sounds more American than usual probably related to the repertoire.

I too have thoroughly enjoyed his work , perhaps less so his involvement in CD issues where he made some quite odd decisions regarding track choice. That aside he did plenty to deserve more than just a foot note in jazz history. I think his role with Monk must be his most significant, given the huge importance of the Riverside dates and Monk's subsequent trajectory. RIP

Elton Dean Quintet----------Welcomet-----------(impetus) Rather one dimensionally recorded gig from Brazil 1986. Harry Beckett in fine form as is Paul Rutherford. Bass and drum are poorly served on an otherwise interesting recording.
