  1. Sadao Wantanabe-------Sadao meets sharps & Flats-------(RCA Japan) Varied big band date. Middle of the road but pretty nice with great playing. Liner entirely in Japanese so no idea who else is playing .
  2. I've now accumulated around 50 Ellington 78s. I've the HMV edition of this great disc. In some ways the brief format of 78s allows me to focus on the music in a way I find harder with CDs or LPs of the same material.
  3. Still looking for Destination Out ..... Currently playing thought my purchases from Amoeba SF and Academy NYC.... Buddy Collette ---------Cool, calm and Collette...... ( ABC) Very fine album, quite a bit more muscular than I was expecting , aside from the leader Dick Shreveport on piano is excellent.
  4. Well, if it's a digital source, I think I'd rather have it in a digital medium. But that's just me. Same here. I generally avoid new vinyl issues unless it's clear regarding source used and overall sound quality of the product.
  5. I'll check my copy too. (NY mono), my recollection is that it's pretty quiet.
  6. Very belated birthday congratulations. Here's hoping this year is kinder on you than the last.
  7. On holiday way out west. Managed to get to Amoeba ,San Francisco , not much of real interest. Picked up Frank Wess - Steamin' and Willis Jackson - Shuckin' . Both trident blue label Prestige pressings. Irritated that I failed to realise that the Wess is merely a reissue of Thad Jones- After Hours, which I already own. Grrrrrh.
  8. Same solution for my copy of 'Sticky Fingers'
  9. I've compared the mono MM 33 rpm issue of 'Blue Train' to AP's stereo 45rpm edition. The MM. has received considerable praise in some on line reviews. After careful listening I'd reject such claims ad being wildly over the top. The MM sounds fine but is hardly a revelation either in mono vs stereo or overall sound. It does sound brilliant but the AP edition does too.
  10. Congratulations !!!
  11. I've had two editions of BB. The original CD issue from the late 80s, this sounded so bad I rarely listened to it. Few years ago I picked up the UK 2LP (original issue) which sounds fantastic. I've not needed to look further and haven't heard any of the additional material issue on the extended reissues.
  12. Jazz West Coast Vol. 3-------( Vogue UK)- ex Pacific Classic cover with a diver coming of the water with a trident and trumpet. Great set of tunes including Too Marvellous for Words by Phil Urso/Bob Burgess - a track which by all accounts hasn't seen too many issues.
  13. Julius Hemphill Big Band--------------(Elektra Musician) One very long poor track with narration but otherwise some decent moments.
  14. New arrival...inspired by the Horo thread Gil Evans-------Parabola--------(Horo) Really superb set, maybe I'm lucky but the vinyl sounds perfect......
  15. Any good or chaotic mess. I rather liked Exit .
  16. Ken Colyer's Jazzmen----Watch that dirty tone of yours... There are ladies present!---------(Joy) Joyful set despite lots of light scratches. Clearly enjoyed by its previous owner.
  17. I've always liked it and never understood why it wasn't rated higher .
  18. Enrico Rava-----------Jazz Confronto 14---------(Horo) My only Horo and it sounds fine
  19. What a great package, along with the second set. I have made a few cdr compilations from the Savoy sets. The music is great but the transfers/mastering leaves a lot to be desired.
  20. Yes, this really is a sublime record. Amazing sound but considering the circumstances pretty incredible. It's calming experience but exciting at the same time. A gem.
  21. I didn't know who he was or indeed just how long he'd been around but I always read his reviews if I came across them. He knew what he was taking about , which is more than can be said for some wannabe critics.
  22. I'll be happier if I hear that the money taken from Tommy Smith was going to other jazz organisations in Scotland, but somehow I doubt it. He has done a great job promoting the SNJO. I've seen them a few times most recently with Makoto Ozone guesting. The SNJO was bursting with talent but I'm yet to be convinced by the arrangements Smith produces. They just don't get into my soul.
  23. I might make it to Phil Bancroft's gig this weekend but otherwise work commitments will prevent much else. Not too much appeals to me, I regret to say. Far cry from yesteryear but that's replicated up and down the country in festivals.
  24. I have the same pressing John. Sounds extremely good ! Same, very lively sounding pressing.
  25. I think I've most of these .the standard is highly variable ,
