  1. CD lifespan varies depending on a number of factors... same goes for humans so it's not worth obsessing over for me. But yeah, all my CDs are ripped in a lossless format and backed up multiple times etc. It would take me years to rip all my CDs. I'm sure I have better things to do. I've kind of accepted that some CDs will have limited lifespan. I'll have around 3000 and apart from CDRs only one (Madame Butterfly on Deutsche Grammaphon) has actually failed so far through deterioration. A few others have suffered from trauma.
  2. We I for one have embraced streaming (to an extent). For sampling music and musicians it's great but for extended listening I still prefer 78/ LP/ CD etc.
  3. I've had this a week or two. I was very impressed, good writing & playing .
  4. Me too. I think I've claimed Oblique as my favorite Hutcherson date for almost 20 years. I have the US CD that predates the RVG, i.e. with the Japanese cover (which I like a lot more than the RVG cover). Certainly one of the very best pairings of Bobby and Herbie. Listened to this all the way through for the first time in probably several. It's much better than I remembered, sound on the RVG is somewhat cloudy which lessens the clarity of what's going on. Some great tunes. I recant, apologies to Bobby.
  5. When I spoke briefly to Ambrose at the gig I attended he mentioned Marcus Belgrave as an influence. I'm not familiar enough with Belgrave to know if Akinmusire has audible evidence of this influence. I thought he sounded a bit like Woody Shaw.
  6. True , but I hate buying music by the kilo
  7. I've listened as carefully as I can to comparethe CD v LP of Ira's session. The sound of the CD is a clear winner. Cymbals are less splashy and one dimensional on the CD. Bass sounds from bass drum and the bass itself are much clearer , previously they sounded quite feint. The balance between the instruments sounds more natural or realistic. What was slightly disjointed on the LP sounds more coherent. Overall on the CD it is much easier to hear the music as intended. I'm loving the music all the more for these noticeable improvements. No wonder Mr Sullivan's pleased. Next up Generation.
  8. I was a bit disappointed by Oblique when I got it in the RVG livery several years ago. Not listened to it in a long time but everything in the end falls short of Dialogue.
  9. Regarding the Ira Sullivan: I hadn't realised the cover photo was the same as on the LP. My copy has always been dominated by a huge Flying Fish sticker. The music is as good as it always was. For some reason it sounds more coherent. I think it's because the bass lines are a touch more prominent on the new CD than on the LP. Perhaps it's something else but the music seams to have greater heft that makes it easier on the ear. I'm rather taken by the unreleased Blues for Johnny Bratton which I'd have included over the multi-tracked Monday's Dance ( I have a problem with multi tracking ). In fairness they're very different tracks and I can see how the modal BfJB it's quite like the others.
  10. I'd not heard of him when I saw him with John Escreet's band( a number of years ago) I was blown away. A soulful guy with technique and plenty of feeling. What I've heard on disc hasn't quite matched that initial exposure but he's one to watch.
  11. The two Barney Wilen discs in this series sound excellent and are both marked FWIW as ' 2014 DSD'. I've not heard any other CD version to compare mastering etc.
  12. Farewell Horace, totally brilliant. So many highlights.
  13. My favourite Doors album. My copy has a "transparency "'front cover photo of the band with the yellow background coming from the inner sleeve. The cornets of the album cover are rounded off to give the impression of a mounted 35mm transparency . Cool idea totally lost with subsequent reissues.
  14. Those all look interesting, hope the rest are of a similar standard. I've been playing loads of 78s over the past few days. The recent Uptown Howard McGhee CD prompted me to dig out a wide variety of bebop 78s. I must organise my collection as it takes forever to find things but does have the advantage of pulling things off the shelf randomly and playing them. I'll have to clear the living room tomorrow as there piles of them everywhere.
  15. I'd not really listened closely to late Armstrong until this set came along ( does this set really count as late ?) . Ive had and enjoyed the Columbia Satch Plays Fats and Handy albums for years and enjoyed them but that's about it. Armstrong still could play and the sets are expertly paced and all in good taste. No filler in this set.
  16. Pretty much my take too. Spotify version sounds quite 'swishy' at points but it's good enough to hear the music (at last)
  17. Been enjoying my set these past few days. Discs 1-3 so far. All excellent , the Milan recordings seem especially good.
  18. Have a great day!
  19. some very nice ones there especially those Dials. great haul.
  20. Graham Collier--------Deep Dark Blue Centre-------(Deram)
  21. Based on brief conversations I'd give the nod to The Bad Plus as they are all very approachable. David Berkman likewise is a genuinely nice guy. Hope he'll come to town again sometime soon. Oliver Lake and Lee Konitz were both generous with time and encourage to local musicians here. It's rare to come across grumpy guys in my experience .
  22. Some great sides Jeff, I've "evening mail" and "playhouse" plus a few other others all in similar condition to yours. Today's find for me was West Virginian Glee Club-------Ezekiel saw de wheel/ Walk in Jerusalem just like John------(Brunswick UK) From what I've found in the net. Directed by one Clarence Cameron White in 1927. It's very well recorded . Possible a bit on the polite/ refined side but interesting all male vocal work. Worth 99 pence IMO.
  23. I'd agree but the Mosaic set is well worth it. Some great music and decent mastering (although I know others disagree on the latter)
  24. I might finally get off the fence regarding the Jazz Crusaders set or possibly the Threadgill.Choices, choices etc.
