  1. Buddy Rich------The Driver------(Philips International ) UK mid seventies pressing of this 1960 date originally issued on Mercury in 1965. This was on the Mosaic under Rich's name. I've had a number of tracks on a CD compilation (Compact Jazz) for many years and always admired this small group effort. Rich isn't overbearing and Seldon Powell is on tenor.
  2. Today's purchases ... Fezz Williams-----------Razor Edge/ Number Ten--------(Brunswick) UK 3596, recorded June 1927, two good numbers and nothing to suggest a novelty act here. John Kirby ---------Pastel Blue/ Rehearsin' for a nervous breakdown ------(Brunswick) UK , Oct. 1938. The other half of the tracks of Kirby's debut recording. I'm no expert on his output but these earlier sides swing harder and feel less chamber like than say "Cuttin the campus" from Jan. 1941.

    Spirit

That's the order I like them in too. I've got an early compilation LP ( Best of Spirit) which is accurately titled. It probably gets the most play in this house.
  4. Nice stylitistic range there. I've not come across any Piron's but I'm well acquainted to all manner of laminated Parlophone discs. Even when quite worn they tend to play better than they look. This isn't unique to Parlophones but something to do with the high quality shellac used to laminate the core.
  5. Got mine a few days ago and it sounds very good. Great playing, tunes and fine sound.
  6. Lucky Thompson- --Boppin the blues/ Just one more chance-------( HMV) Swing Music Series 1949 Being an LT nut I picked this near mint UK edition despite already having a nice Victor US edition. As it turns out the UK edition probably has the edge. I can only say probably as I've not looked for the Victor , it'll be somewhere but locating 78s has never been my strong point. Also picked up John Kirby ---- Rose Room/ Coquette----(Parlophone ) R2806 I was both surprised and disappointed to read in my newly acquired Rust ( 5th ed.) that RR is a dub and Coquette a master pressing. In close listening RR does sound a little dustier but excellent none the less. Now that I've a good discography I'll no doubt discover more of my cherished 78s are dubs. Final reasonably noteworthy find was Nat Gonella------Basin Street Blues/ E flat blues----(Parlophone ) Fine British band from 1935 with NG in excellent Satch inspired voice. Undervalued
  7. Tonight an odd mixture Eddy Louiss on Dreyfus but or relevance here Sam Rivers - Complete Blue Note- disc 2 Earl Hines- disc 7 ( The Hines is a mixed bag in an otherwise strong set)- repeated listening helping me appreciate someday the more dated material ( usually with vocalists involved)
  8. Any more about the Monk ? I always thought the RVG was above criticism compared to the McMaster largely due to original acetates being used IIRC.
  9. They cost me £14.50 shipped individually to avoid customs. CDJapan put full value on customs forms so you get hit very quickly. A much bigger order might tip the balance as it is the £8 handling fee plus VAT means I'll be ordering only a very few of these . And only one at a time.
  10. ....at some point.....
  11. Amazon uk gives 25/11/13 as the release date. Any idea if the LP has digital sources involved .?
  12. This is how I use it too. It's early days as I've only been using it for just over a month. I'm surprised how poor the interface is and how little information is given. You either need to know what you're looking for or just don't care.
  13. NSA searches always will slow things down
  14. This site is very reliable. IIRC postage was included in the cost of the CDs but perhaps it's different shipping stateside.
  15. Happy Birthday Jeff !
  16. apols for not noting "live" recordings. Rollins is with CB on Brownie Lives! on a well known Spanish label. No links allowed but sound is good enough and performance is excellent IIRC. This is the dates at Basin Street and Carnegie Hall, brilliant found it on CD. Basin Street is great - but not "live". Brownie Lives! is live and purports to be from Basin Street. The EmArcy session released as " Basin Street" is indeed a studio recording.

  18. listened to this on Slopify and thought its sounded very good.
  19. easy.....everything they recorded together on EmArcy & Prestige
  20. John Mayall Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton- ( UK ) mono edition of the Beano. Sounds much more listenable than the stereo 2LP Dutch edition. I wonder what the engineer was doing during this session as it's largely recorded in the red. Super hot.
  21. Speak no Evil arrived today. Again very high sound quality , compares very well with the MM LP edition. All the alternates are new to me as the McMaster is my only other CD version. As with OTL it'll take some listening for this listener to identify the differences between master and alternate takes. So another winner as the McMaster sounds much shriller than this edition.
  22. McMaster = at times bright and a bit thin, bass lacks depth RVG = better bass , sometimes a bit cloudy , overall an improvement on Mcmaster TYCJ = bass very clear, no sense of dullness, treble perfect Small but noticeable increments in SQ with each step. All are perfectly listenable but given the choice ...... The TYCJ is the clear winner on my system and is of course way cheaper than the MM of OTL.
  23. Out to Lunch just arrived. Overall sound is very good but not as good as the Music Matters LP set. The alternates sound pretty similar to released versions but will need closer study .
  24. I recall this and Grab This being high order Griff, perhaps not on the level of Full House ( which I've long valued)
  25. I have too little by McPhee and none from this set. Any sources likely in UK or Europe ?
