  1. Joe Gallivan-------Intercontinental Express------(Compendium Records) rec 1976 Fusion influenced big band with Charles Austin, Kenny Wheeler, Ronnie Scott and others. Pretty good , some curious vocals every now and then.
  2. Something for the weekend...done
  3. any of the recent lot ie Vols. 13- 17 standout particularly. I've around half a dozen of these and whilst they are all good I'm not sure how much of this era of the band I need.
  4. This list doesn't mean much to me but it must be fascinating listening to what else was being recorded in NY nearly a century ago. I've kept my eyes peeled for klezmer discs but haven't come across any yet. Also I've not seen that green Columbia label, was that a "folk" equivalent of the blue label used around 1920?
  5. Black Arthur Blythe---- "Bush Baby"-------(Echo Jazz) recorded 1977 .......and quite a bit more interesting than some of his Columbia sides, recommended then George Adams-------"Sound Suggestions"-------(ECM) rec. 1979 .......... stellar lineup deliver the goods , if only Manfred had stopped Adams singing on one track. Wheeler in very fine form , I've yet to get a handle on which tenor is Adams and which Heinz Sauer. Also recommended.
  6. Two new 78s today , both 99 pence Enrico Caruso "Because" -(HMV) single sided pink label 1912 issue Art Hickman Orchestra- "Whispering /If a wish could make it so" (Columbia) Blue label 1920 The latter is actually quite jazzy the former less so. For a disc that's over 100 years old "Because" plays incredibly well with very good ( acoustic sound). The singer isn't bad either. Anyone know why these were one sided? Perhaps anticipating audiophile fetishism by some while.
  7. Bennie Maupin, Mike Nock , Cecil McBee, Eddie Marshall---- "Almanac"-----(IAI) issued 1977 but sleeve says recorded NYC 1967, wonder if this is correct ?? Any which way it's a very good as you'd hope with Maupin sounding excellent. His playing here reminds me of Sam Rivers. Excellent.
  8. With my MacBook the original that came with it lasted 2 years where as the replacement ( Mac original) has been going strong for 4 years!
  9. Happy birthday indeed, hadn't heard of him until quite recently but have since then enjoyed an RCA side and "Atlantic Suite" on Sackville. Very good arranger, fine sides.
  10. Barry Guy, Howard Riley, John Stevens, Trevor Watts,- " Endgame"- (Japo) rec. 1979 and it's just as good as you'd expect. Recommended.
  11. listening again having adjusted azimuth on the fly and the background is now nice and quiet. Sound good and strong , more importantly "Deep in dream" has to be one of the best ballads I've heard.
  12. After an hour spent looking for the battery for my hedge trimmer , I'm forced to sit down and listen to another purchase from yesterday. I had a bit of a bonanza getting 16 LPs from a stall holder at a local fair. A mix of ECMs, BNs,. I could have bought dozens as the guy just had so much stuff but I was disciplined Helen Merrill- "The feeling is mutual"- (Milestone) 9003 stereo, .... great voice and fine performances from all concerned. Mint vinyl sounds a little rough listening over headphones. More consistent than the album with Brownie which IIRC had some dross included ( although overall it is excellent)
  13. Harry Beckett " Bremen Concert" - (West Wind). Some fine playing here , side 2 is very good but the first side falls back into a groove thing too easily. Not bad overall but not his best.
  14. I see Roscoe is to perform "Nonaah". I love that piece but always thought of it as a one off, because such a large element of it is surprise. Perhaps foolishly I've thought that blindsiding the audience to that degree could only happen once. Clearly I underestimate Roscoe's depth of invention. Has he performed "Nonaah" with some frequency?
  15. Art Blakey -"Indestructible" BN NY label, mono,, no ear, RVG etc. Cover and vinyl NM . £9 today, not bad I thought.
  16. Very sad news about someone so young. A very fine musician and always a quality mark on a session for my ears.
  17. Swanee Syncopators-"Show me the way to go home/ No one knows what it's all about "- (Homochord) UK . Part of my recent haul. 1920s acoustic recording of a British group ( I think) . Devoid of improvisation but quite fun in a stiff formal way that you'd expect. Recommended for insomniacs but the label does look nice - Next ..... Boyd Senter- "Wabash Blues/The Grind Out"- (Parlophone UK) ultra quiet laminate pressing (purple label) . Picked this one as Eddie Lang plays too. Jerky see saw clarinet but quite nice really
  18. Been spinning 78s daily for some weeks. Recently got a haul of around 40 platters. Quite a mix of jazz , mainly British pressings. All filthy having been stored poorly.Fletcher Henderson , Sonny Berman, Howard McGhee, Ellington, Bix, Satch and ten Jelly Roll HMVs !!! I'll mention a few of these in the coming weeks as they get cleaned up. Pick of the bunch so far are three Josh White sides of which this one stands out. Strange Fruit/ House of the Rising sun ( Brunswick UK) 1944- yes those two well known tunes all delivered in a pretty slow bluesy fashion. Fruit is the better I think but Rising Sun makes interesting comparison to the. Animals version.
  19. I've always thought of Sandy Brown as being beyond-trad given that even the earliest material I've heard has at the very least a high-life feel that's not found in normal trad.
  20. Must look out my CD copy. I only recall that the sound wasn't that great. It's been a while though.
  21. I'm quite happy with the sound of the L+R CD , but haven't heard the Jazzhus to compare
  22. Pete Brown -"Peter the Great" -(London ) 10 inch UK pressing of Bethlehem sides. Joe Wilder sounds in fine form as does Wade Leggs (sic) . Pete himself feels just about as comfortable with boppish lines as Lem Davis does on the Clayton Jam Sessions. At times hesitant and with clearly no idea of what to play . Hardly the modernist the writer of the liner notes proclaims him to be .None the less an attractive set which despite some reservations works well in a swing-to-bop mode.
  23. The Pettiford certainly looks nice. It must be a pretty recent release as it's not mentioned on the label's website !!
