I took someone for dose 1 last Saturday; there were separate lines and vaccination stations for dose 1 and dose 2. Why would they do that if the doses are identical?
-
I saw him five or six times with Ornette Coleman and Prime Time, paired with Albert McDowell on the dual bass guitars, back in the 1980s. He was awesome. I've caught him twice in the last six or seven years at Winter Jazzfest (playing with Mark Ribot one time and Gary Bartz the other), and he still is.

In addition to some of the ones noted above, my favorites include Ronald Shannon Jackson, Shannon's House and What Spirit Say Big John Patton, This One's for Ja Robert Musso, Intermedium Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Dreamscape

In reality, wind turbine outages have been responsible for less than 13% of Texas’ total power shortages, the nonprofit electric grid overseer Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) told Bloomberg and local news outlets on Tuesday. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joewalsh/2021/02/16/wind-power-isnt-to-blame-for-texas-electricity-crisis/

I read this morning that most (87%) of the failures are gas and coal generators that were not winterized.
-
Not as bad as it might have been--it was 45 F early this morning inside. Finally the power came on and then went off (repeat and repeat)--bascially about six hours of power spread across the day. Well, we are having a highly unusual level of cold weather across the entire state, sending demand very high (but not as high as we have during heat waves in the summer). However, it appears the power generation companies did not do what was recommended the last time something similar happened about ten years ago--to appropriately winterize the power generators, resulting in many generators failing in the extreme cold and collapsing supply while demand was peaking. We also have the situation where the power industry has been privatized, so the industry is not really operated like a government monopoly utility any more. That may have something to do with it (what's the profit in preparing for the worse case scenario?) In addition, Texas has a large investment in wind power, which has been said to be failing at this point in the extreme cold.
-
Fourteen straight hours with no power last night (after two hours of power preceded by five hours with no power), while temperature plunged to Minus 2 F.

New to the world of Online Vinyl Shopping

Louisiana Music Factory is a fine store worthy of a visit in New Orleans (also online), just a stone's throw from Snug Harbor. -
The collaboration is very good; I saw a performance in Houston a couple years ago. Magos' voice is really beautiful.

CHAN CENTRE DOT COM SERIES Magos Herrera and Brooklyn Rider A digital production presented by the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts Watch online from Feb 12, 2021 at 7pm PT | Live pre-show artist talk at 6:15pm PT Read about the virtual experience here One of contemporary Latin music’s most expressive voices, Magos Herrera is “without a doubt the best jazz singer out of Mexico, and is establishing herself among the best singers in jazz” (JazzTimes). Known for her eloquent vocal improvisations that embrace Latin American melodies and rhythms, Mexican-born Herrera’s exquisite songs in Spanish, English, and Portuguese surpass language boundaries with their exceptional beauty. The dizzyingly eclectic string quartet Brooklyn Rider has worked with Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Redman, and performed music by Philip Glass and Björk. “The future of chamber music” (Strings Magazine), Brooklyn Rider features violinists Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords, and cellist Michael Nicolas, plus guest percussionist Mathias Kunzli. These omnivorous artists join forces for Dreamers—a project that celebrates music as a political act by imaginatively reinterpreting gems from the Ibero-American songbook (Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto, etc.) alongside new pieces adapted from texts written by Rubén Darío, Federico García Lorca, and other poets from regions that endured brutal state violence. An outspoken social justice champion, Herrera stresses that these are beautiful songs, but beauty with purpose: “It’s important to remember that every big change in history happened because someone dared to dream about it.” PRE-SHOW TALK: There will be a pre-show talk for this performance via Zoom at 6:15pm PT on Friday, February 12. Magos Herrera and Brooklyn Rider’s Colin Jacobsen will join Pablo Pietropaolo for a conversation about their music and collaboration. More information on how to watch this online event will be available closer to the date.
