That is not even original, as Prestige Records had a Plays for Lovers series. -

Gregg August, Dialogues on Race This bassist/composer's set at Winter JazzFest (an eternity ago) in January was an unexpected highlight, and this new CD reflects what I heard. https://www.jazzspeaks.org/dialogues-on-race-gregg-august-speaks/ https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/gregg-august-dialogues-on-race-volume-1-iacuessa/

The performance is great. Hyperspeed Bird. Sound is decent. Probably not worth it if you have the CD The Washington Concerts.

Bobby Hutcherson, The Kicker (Blue Note/Tone Poet) (rather wonderful sound) The Real Earl Hines (Focus) Buddy Rich, The Last Blues Album, volume 1 (Groove Merchant) (stellar small group outing with Jimmy McGriff, George Freeman, Illinois Jacquet, Kenny Barron, Bob Cranshaw) Generic rebuttal to praise of Tone Poet LP sound (cut and paste as appropriate): The recording was shelved by Alfred Lion because it was an early experimental digital recording and hence cannot possibly sound good on vinyl. Rudy was on vacation that day and the session was recorded by his 12 year old nephew. Someone left a beer can in the piano which can be distinctly heard by golden ear audiophiles at the 4:33 point on Bedouin and may be mistaken for a piano warble. Buddy Rich does not sound right on Blue Note.

LF: Charlie Parker Complete Royal Roost Broadcasts
kh1958 replied to bluesForBartok's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Basically, five tracks (about 20 minutes of material) on that CD are on par (musically and soundwise) with the Savoy broadcast material--so it's a matter of your level of Bird fanaticism (Mine = Extreme) as to whether it is worth buying. -

A little bit of Symphony Sid goes a long way. There is some additional Royal Roost material (not on Savoy) on a release called New Bird--Rare Live Recordings & Interviews (Swan Records). -

At the Village Vanguard: FRIDAY + SATURDAY NIGHT: THE GEORGE CABLES TRIO This Friday and Saturday, pianist George Cables will play the Vanguard stage; accompanying him will be Essiet Okon Essiet on bass and Billy Hart on drums. The New Yorker says it best; "Dubbed 'Mr. Beautiful' by the late, great, Art Pepper... George Cables has established himself as an individualist whose comfort with bebop-based modern jazz has an unimpeachable stamp of authenticity."
