  13. At the Denton Jazz Festival: Dave Holland Trio August 18, 2022 By stevehorn featuring Kevin Eubanks and Eric Harland Friday, October 7 @ 9pm Dave Holland is a bassist, composer, and bandleader. His passion for musical expression (of all styles and dedication to creating consistently innovative music ensembles) have propelled a professional career of more than 50 years and earned him top honors in his field, including multiple Grammy awards and the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2017. From the electric whirlwind of Miles Davis’ electric band to the pioneering avant-garde quartet Circle and his acclaimed big band, Holland has been at the forefront of jazz in many forms since his earliest days. He has never stopped evolving, reinventing his concept and approach with each new project while constantly honing his instantly identifiable voice. The Boston Globe praises Holland as “a master bassist and bandleader, one of the most sophisticated composers and arrangers in the jazz world.” The Dave Holland Trio will take the main stage on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 9pm. 18. The SmallsLIVE Newsletter - 8/15/2022 Dear Friends: Post COVID, when Smalls and Mezzrow were once again allowed to operate, it was no longer legal for us to use funds publicly raised by the SmallsLIVE Foundation to operate the businesses. This left unallocated funds for the foundation to use in a proper fashion. It was decided to use the remaining funds to honor and support senior jazz artists. The SmallsLIVE Foundation announces the debut of the "SmallsLIVE Living Masters Award". A SmallsLIVE Living Masters is a senior (age-wise) jazz artist, universally acclaimed by their peers, and with a relation to Smalls or Mezzrow Jazz Clubs. There is a $10,000 cash award component for the artist for their personal use as well as a live video/audio recording done in the clubs. Our goal is to honor and aid the masters who are still with us (still gigging and doing it every night) and to document their current work. We have partnered with Cory Weeds and The CellarLive Music Group to distribute these final projects. There will also be full HD video on the SmallsLIVE Youtube channel. The cover photos and other beautiful shots are from photographer William Brown. Glen Forest and GB's Juke Joint did the engineering, mastering and video work. Glen and his studio sound has been a big part of SmallsLIVE since the inception of the label. The first six awardees are Sheila Jordan, Kirk Lightsey, Tyler Mitchell with Marshall Allen (co winners), David Liebman, Jesse Davis and George Coleman. The flagship project is Sheila Jordan with Alan Broadbent and Harvey S live from Mezzrow and is now getting reviews - CLICK HERE My sincerest thanks to all of the musicians, the fans and to everyone who supported the SmallsLIVE Foundation during the challenging COVID lockdown. These projects are created by you and are for the benefit of all humanity. Sincerest Regards, Spike
  19. Oddly, persevering though the entire CD, I found that only the first six tracks are defective; the last four sound great.
  20. Gene Ramey lived in Austin, Texas at the end of his life and occasionally played with local jazz musicians. I saw him live in Austin once circa 1982. He still sounded good.
  21. Sun Ra, Ra to the Rescue (Modern Harmonic) Beware, this CD is defectively made. Volume inexplicably rises and falls on tracks throughout. Unlistenable.

CD 16.99 Kirk Lightsey with Freddie Hubbard — Temptation ... CD 9.99 A very hip group, and a wonderful meeting between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Kirk Lightsey! We always like Kirk, but love him even more when he's working with a horn player – as his sound seems to catch fire, and move with even bolder notes than usual – which is definitely the case on the album's opener, a nice take on Hubbard's classic "Gibraltar" – in a spirit that continues strongly throughout! Bass is from Santi Debriano, drums are from Eddie Gladden, and Jerry Gonzalez plays percussion on one track – and Freddie's in that great 80s sound of his – a mode that's a return to the straighter hardbop of his Blue Note years, but with the phrasing learned during his 70s funk years – on titles that include "Gibraltar", "Evidence", "Brigitte", "Temptation", and "Society Red".
